What are the fashionable club selection choices these days? Do people still go out with 3 and 5 woods or just the 3 and a recovery? I've heard that it's popular to have a high wedge in addition to the 5-SW set? recovery clubs are in fashion as they give the sort of range of a long iron but tend to fly higher , also useful for playing little pitch and runs when you are just too far off the edge of the green to putt but dont want to chip it |

i would always buy my wedges and woods separate from my irons , i was really fussy about the feel and look of my wedge especially for playing the pitch shots around the green as opposed to hitting full shots

I'm just wondering if I have a recovery whether it's necessary to have a 5 wood. What do you think?

Before investing in my new driver and hybrid, I used to use a 5 wood that a mate of mine gave to me. I seemed to do OK with it both off the tee and the ground, but would play a few duff shots with it. Since buying my new hybrid I use that where I would previously have used my 5 wood. I hit much more confidently with the hybrid and my duff shots are now far fewer. |

I only have irons up to 7. My 6, 5, 4 and 3 are hybrids. Hybrids are generally easier to hit and the combo works well for me. I will say though with my first set I could use my rescue out of the rough but not on the fairway. Now that I've adapted to this set it's the other way around. Great off the fairway but can't use them from the rough. Then again a 7 iron out of the rough is probably more sensible anyway rather than trying to blast my way out The hybrids I now have are more like woods. They have quite a flatter sole whereas my old rescue club had a rounded sole.I do also have a lob wedge. I originally bought it because I can't chip and that left an awkward gap between 90 yards (SW) and a sensible bump and run (30 yards). The LW at 60 yards fit quite well but unfortunately when it goes wrong it goes spectacularly wrong so now I avoid it. I've adopted a more sensible approach of laying up if needed to avoid my ball being in that awkward gap in the first place ![]() I might get a gap wedge though this year. That sits between SW and PW which could be handy. At the moment I have 90 yards for SW and 110 for PW so something at 100 would be useful. My 3 hybrid is love/hate. I think I've finally got to grips with it now but I've gone through phases of not being able to hit it properly. Keep coming down right on the ball. Like a top only smashing the ball into the turf ![]() But now that I've figured it out the love is coming back. A good strike with that 3 will send the ball over 190 yards. I had one amazing shot last August when it flew 220 yards up a hill and reached the green. Gave the people waiting on that green a bit of a surprise but luckily they had waved me on in the reasonable expectation that they were safe so we were able to laugh about it. |

On the gap wedge issue, I have one. I find it very useful for the short shot onto the green where you need it to land without running too much. I find I really get underneath it, so it goes high but not far. Very frustrating when you misjudge though and land short, because as I say it doesn't run on too much! |

I never knew you could get 6 and 5 hybrids! Might have to look into that - I'm useless with a 5 and 6 iron!

I've heard that it's popular to have a high wedge in addition to the 5-SW set? I have Jetspeed Driver, 3 and 5 wood. (3 gets used on the fairway a few times) Irons 5 -PS. Two ATV wedges 54 and 60 Whitehot #7 putter. I also have a £12 Dunlop chipper that has its uses. The 54 wedge is mostly bunker and short chips, the 60 is used where I want to get over an obstacle - bunker, ditch - at edge of green and I want the ball to drop dead on landing. |

The one that makes us go back for more and forget the other 99 shots

![]() i used to use it all the time off the tee as i got better control than my driver without losing much distance |

Currently thinking about these irons. I've seen some very good reviews for the price:
https://www.golfonline.co.uk/taylorm...PcJhoCq4vw_wcB I've mention our Club Pro being willing to match anything online. When I bought my driver he gave me a free lesson. Do you not have a Pro who could help you choose a set? |

I'm not really following this thread, but I saw the earlier post about going to London and following the 'Golf Sale' signs for a good bargain. Has anyone actually done that? I just assumed they were intended to lead people with money to burn round in circles down streets one wouldn't normally go down - essentially just driving footfall down the less trodden paths.

they advertised as having all the top brands on sale when you go in they maybe had a couple of titleist or wilson golf gloves to cover themselves from false advertising and the rest was low quality tat |

Then hit it harder with the SW or not so hard with the PW and save yourself £75

I'm not very good at adjusting strength on a full swing unfortunately. The only time I can control distance through the swing is when I'm bumping and running or putting.

I've been thinking about it. I currently only have GPS which is great for long distances but not accurate on close approaches. Then again neither am I so I'm not sure what difference it will make knowing whether the pin is 21 or 22 yards away

Cos you always win the game?
My GPS improved my game but then so did the lessons and driving range practice. These days the majority of your opponents will also use technology. |

It's hard to justify being a member if you aren't retired. Most non-retirees are lucky to be sure of playing a game at that course every other week and that's typically the minimum you need to make it worthwhile. I'm a member of Cherwell Edge but it only makes sense for me because it's on the way home from work and during the summer I can play weekday evenings.
The decent clubs near me charge around 2 grand as a joining fee and over a grand in yearly fees. It's going to have to wait until either my kids want to play too, or until they've flown the nest (around 17 years time). ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Every other club around here is just a subscription and is more than happy to take bookings for visitors. It's not even like Tadmarton is a great course. It's pleasant enough but nothing out of the ordinary for around here. Oh and they have a dress code. Most course around here just follow the simple rule of 'don't look like a scruff' and in summer 'don't look like you're visiting the beach'. I don't know what the subscription will be for my club this year (should find out end of month) but I took up an offer year before last that was £600 for 18 months. |

Yeah. When I moved house I had this notion that I would be joining a golf club, as there are some great ones nearby. Sadly, although I could afford them I had to admit that I couldn't justify the fees. The reality for me at the moment is that I'd struggle to get out once a month and play!

I thought joining fees were a thing of the past as club memberships are declining. |

When I was a member of a club I was able to take up an 'under 30s' offer that was only £50 a month. I was playing at least once a week (usually saturday and sunday) so I got my money's worth - even when you take into account the 3 months of the year I didn't play.

![]() Me and my buddy do our damnedest to play all year round. This is the first year we've struggled a bit and it's been because of the waterlogged courses rather than our determination. We're at the lovely Feldon Valley this sunday. Possible the most attractive course in the area. |
