Has it ever occurred to anyone that Pete's World is a dystopian nightmare, and that's where the Doctor dropped Rose off in?

There was basically a global war between mankind and Cybermen, an armed revolution in the UK (in the Series 2 finale, its stated that the people took over Torchwood when they found out what they were doing, and the UK is now a "people's republic," one up from the otherwise French-style republic we saw in Age of Steel). And during Doomsday we also were told of global climate chaos caused by the rift in space at Torchwood, the one the Cybermen used to cross dimensions.

So it's a war-torn, climate-destroyed, flooded nightmare. And Rose and her meta-crisis, regeneration-limit ruining boyfriend are basically stuck there to raise a family.

Yes, but . . her very own 10th Doctor. With kissing.

Well worth it, I think.

I like to think that the Meta-Crisis Doc died in agony days later like one of those clones of Ripley in Alien:Resurrection.

I don't think it is any worst than our earth. It looked in good condition when we saw it, and our universe is facing the same climate change problems.

And has also faced many invasions and moved on.

But most importantly, they have their own TARDIS, it was in a deleted scene where Donna explained how to quickly grow a TARDIS. But would it work in that universe? Who knows.

Didn't Ripley shoot one? I seem to remember, "kill...me..." as a line from that movie.

I didn't understand the point in making such a forced and dramatic exit for Rose in Series 2 when he rewrote an even sillier one two years later. It even seemed to get more time than Donna's exit, which was actually done quite well. I think Davies just completely lost the plot by that point.

It was irritating how Rose seemed to be treated like the most important companion ever that she got her own Doctor to live with and love. Not a Rose fan at all. :P

Rose does seem a bit marmite on this forum.

I always saw Stolen Earth/Journey's End as being a way for RTD to celebrate and (to a degree) conclude his era of Doctor Who. So although Rose's story did take some attention away from Donna's departure, for me it felt well balanced within the story as a whole.

I think sometimes the writers get it right when a companion leaves and sometimes not. Sarah Jane's departure at the end of Hand of Fear was (for me) just awful and pointless. So I'm very grateful that RTD revisited that and gave her a much better departure from the TARDIS.

Martha, too, felt a good departure and I'm glad we got to see her again afterwards. Jack's departure, for me, was a bit shocking - just being left behind after he'd helped defeat the Daleks. And I never really bought the Doctor's reasons for leaving him behind either. It just felt a bit weak.

Donna's departure was tragic but believable and I like the parting gift the Doctor gave her on her wedding day. Amy and Rory, again, tragic but believable. Clara's departure however was a hideous mess. But then it sort of fitted her story that she ended up with a messy timey-wimey departure.

I guess in a way its part of New Who. Each companion's story is an integral part of the show and so their departure has to be a bigger deal then the sudden "I'm not coming with you" departures that used to be tagged onto the end of random stories in Classic Who #JoGrant #SarahJane #Leela #Romana #Nyssa #Tegan

I think you have to be a fan of the RTD era to appreciate The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, but for me it was a cluttered mess of characters I simply wasn't invested in (or strongly disliked in the case of Rose... sorry Rose fans), Davros continued to suffer from the post-Genesis tradition of being portrayed as a generic, over-the-top mad scientist rather than the layered and calculated character of twisted morals from his first appearance, and it generally felt like a rehash of the preceding three finales (yet another invasion of Earth/Dalek finale).

It would be nice to see more Martha exits in the show instead of the usual full-blown departures the modern show has. They can still make it emotional (Jo Grant's exit is still the saddest in all of Doctor Who in my opinion) and it would make a nice contrast from Clara's "travel until I die" attitude.

I was an am a massive fan of The Stolen Earth/Journey's End. I loved seeing all the characters together to help the Doctor. Want the same kind of ending when Moffat leaves tbh.


BIB - I agree on wanting more Martha style exits. I thought this was the way they were going to go with Clara at one point, what with Danny Pink and the supposed Orsen Pink. I thought they was building up to a finale where she just walked off to be with Danny and to live a, relative, normal life and raise a family. Would have been a better ending

Totally agree about the Martha exits. It did seem, at first, that Clara was going to get a similar quiet goodbye at the end of season 8. I think that would have worked for me, especially if it had been revealed she was pregnant with Danny's baby (explaining Orson Pink in Listen).

If Moffat delivers a one-season companion for his final season next year, perhaps she'll have a simpler story and a Martha exit.

I would be quite interested in a one series companion, without the ever-building expectation for a huge exit and also for a change of pace after the long-hauls of Amy and Clara. Martha and Donna proved that you could be just as memorable with a relatively short involvement.

Admittedly I enjoyed Clara's story and felt her Series 8 "exit" would have been unsatisfying to me (so many lies between her and the Doctor, added to her mourning for Danny). I felt they struck the right chords come Face the Raven and then Hell Bent pushed it too far - thankfully in a way so that you can basically choose whether or not Clara is 'alive' or 'dead' to you now, but nonetheless cheaper than her departure proper in FTR.

An additional plus to a one-series companion would be added incentive for Capaldi to stay on past Series 10 - something I am really hoping will come to fruition.

Definitely agree that we need a Martha type exit, sometimes the simple quiet exits are the most saddening. You don't need a massive circus everytime someone leaves, it in no ways makes it more sad, it just drags it out unnecessarily for the most part. (Yes sometimes this works, but it doesn't work very well for most of the time)
