Cue the bombardment of people saying "glad i didn't get a ticket now" etc knowing full well there are hundreds of other artists to see on dozens of stages

To be fair though it is quite uninspiring that it is Coldplay again.

Coldplay are even more dreadful now than they were at first. The most boring rock band on Earth - Glastonbury has fallen a long way since taking a risk and booking Metallica by going back to what they do best, which is keeping the vanilla bland hipsters happy.

Absolutely no fan of them but what do people expect of a headline Glasto act? Fiona Apple? Tori Amos? The headliner HAS to be a massive act not the critic's darlings. And Coldplay, love them or loathe them, really are a bona fide massive act. Yet more sillyness being shown in this thread....

I'm sure Jo Wiley will be salivating at the thought.

There is but Glastonbury obviously sell themselves on the headliners, they don't make big announcements of who is playing Arcadia at 11pm.

The house band return, hopefully without crappy guest stars.

Beyonce is in the UK on tour but has a very convenient few days off just during the particular period that Glastonbury is. I wonder if she'll join Coldplay or play some part in Glastonbury.

If AC/DC aren't one of the headliners I'll be shocked at the incompetency of the Glasto organisers.

They're in Europe at the time and they went on record last year as saying they'd jump at the chance to headline Glasto if given the opportunity.

Quite true...but as someone else said...Coldplay are more the resident house band at Glasto than an actual headliner these days.

I wouldn't be surprised if the organisers wanted a year free of drama after all the controversy they got for booking Metallica and then Kanye West last year. Emily Eavis even got death threats! Bearing that in mind, can you blame them for choosing the safe option? Plus Coldplay are friends of the festival, they 'get' the event and will put their hearts into it, and probably do it for a modest fee despite being a massively popular band. Seems like a win-win to me!

There's a lot more to it than that - the headliners might have already been booked at that point in time, or their agent might have demanded too high a fee.

Anyway, reputable sources are saying the other headliners will almost certainly be Muse and Adele, with a small outside chance of Radiohead or maybe Foo Fighters.

Arguably the problem is that there aren't that many huge headline acts available, and with so many festivals competing for acts it limits the available options. Most big festivals tie headline acts to exclusivity contracts which means that they cannot play more than one in a year.

If you want a house band, The Killers have headlined V Festival 4 times between 2007 and 2014! Now that really is lazy booking. By contrast, this will be Coldplay's fourth time headlining Glastonbury and their first was in 2002.

Glastonbury don't seem to be able to win with their bookings whatever they do these days.

Never understood the hate for Coldplay I don't listen to their albums but their back catalogue of singles is great I think

Coldplay are a bit dull nowadays but they will put on a good show, no doubt. Bless them, they mean well.

I used to hate Coldplay but went to see them and changed my mind. Yes it's safe, but they will put on a good show.

I used to love Coldplay back in the day, but I think their music has been so bland over the last few years.

Exactly! People want an act who are reliable to perform to the best of their ability headlining, especially to close the festival. Not someone like Kanye West who doesn't even bother to rehearse his set beforehand!

Based upon their download festival demands I can see Glastonbury not being interested tbh.

They charge more than 10 times the price normally fork get charged for Glastonbury. Acdc did download for almost 3 million. The normal Glastonbury headliner price is 250 000
They will want their own stage.
They will want their names off the Glastonbury t-shirt line up
They will want no other bands playing while they are on stage

Dull. Bland. What else is there to say about the choice?

Loads of people will enjoy the set so I doubt the organisers will care what a few people on forums think.

Glastonbury. The music festival for people who are not into music. It's just a chance for middle class bed wetters to show their designer wellies off.

Fall Out Boy could headline it. They are bigger than Coldplay and would get the crowd going.

I like a lot of their songs but if it's gonna be a repeat of the Superbowl, I'd prefer someone else. It's a shame there are no huge rock bands at the moment or just a lack of David Bowie level artists... Kanye this year and Coldplay the next - it's not that they're scraping the bottom of the barrel, it's just that there aren't that many big artists that are great live.

Also, what does Prince have against Glastonbury? When will they finally book him?
