This morning I received an email purporting to be from Amazon telling me to update my Kindle Touch. Normally, emails from Amazon appear in my inbox displaying their graphics content, as I have Amazon in my Trusted Sites list. However this morning's email didn't display graphics so I am suspicious as to whether or not this is legitimate. The update instructions contained in the email appear to make sense and they don't contain any links to follow. Has anyone else had a Kindle update email from Amazon recently?

Just check for an update via your Kindle. That way it's safe,

Thanks, Stig - I'll check my software version and update if necessary.

I got an email about it this morning. I also bought "Computer Active" who gave a list of kindles that needed updates. My original one wasn't listed.

I'm still not sure why I received the email. My (two) Kindles are the 4th Generation Kindle Touch and both have the software version 5.3.7.3 (2715280002). According to the Kindle Touch Software Updates page, this is the up-to-date software version. The email text was as follows:

"Several of the Kindle e-readers registered to your account require an important software update. Update your devices to continue downloading e-books and using Kindle services.

To receive the update, follow these steps:

Plug your Kindle in to charge during the update.

Connect to Wi-Fi.

From the Home screen of your Kindle, select Menu or tap the Menu icon. Then choose Sync and Check for Items.

Leave your Kindle connected to both power and Wi-Fi overnight, or until the update is complete.

The software update will download and install automatically, even if your device is asleep. Your device may restart multiple times during the update process. You will get a final confirmation letter on your device when the update is complete.

If you do not update the devices’ software by March 22, 2016, you will no longer be able to access Kindle services or get the update via Wi-Fi. To resume access, you will need to manually update the software on each of your Kindle devices. Please visit our Help page for more details on how to update manually. "

I know that an update is in the pipeline, but I've never had an email about previous updates. The threat about "updating by March 22nd" sounds very suspicious, as does this:
"Leave your Kindle connected to both power and Wi-Fi overnight, or until the update is complete." It's nonsense.

I did the update before I even received the email (as I check for updates regularly). Surely it has to be legit and direct from amazon as my update was showing on my device, regardless of any email ?

It is a genuine email, I've updated mine today - in fact I've had to update twice as my Kindle Keyboard was running 3.3! Been a bit of a pain but managed to do it quite easily.

I got the email, too and there IS an update. I had to move the biggest books to hardisk first, because I had not enough place left.
