Came across this article containing videos in which John Hurt reads a selection of famous speeches from various incarnations of the doctor, and thought it might be of interest.

To be honest, when he did the role for the 50th, I assumed that since it was just a one episode guest star role, and him being such a big star, that he would treat it as such, and never have any who involvement again, so it's nice that he seems actually proud of the role he did in the show, and is happy to further it by doing audios and turning up at conventions etc.

Yeah I agree, I assumed he would just see it as another job too. It is nice, I'm just surprised to see that John Hurt has the time and that conventions etc can afford him.

Being a cold hearted cynic I always assumed that most of the stars who attend conventions are at that stage of their careers where they're glad of the money, but surely John Hurt isn't strapped for cash? I guess like you say he is proud of the role or maybe he enjoys the adulation.

Apparently he's actually quite pleased to officially be one of the Doctors.

I think it's mostly because he has had a bit of time spare to do some less taxing stuff as he recovers from his illness last year. Assuming he's fully in remission I suspect he'll be back to his normal routine soon, but out of what could have been tragedy something both we and he can enjoy seems to have come out of it.
