Glasgow local MUX SFN Trial
It's now been almost three months since the local DAB tests started in Glasgow and as of yet it's still just the one transmitter off Cathkin. Glennifer was switched on last week for couple of days but unfortunately was putting out different output to Cathkin so mostly resulted in fuzz.
I am sure there must be a reason for all of this but any outside observer may be coming to the conclusion that this is the work of a cowboy. |

It's now been almost two hours since the post went live. and as of yet it's still just the one reply. Lots of views, and I tried to kick start it , but that mostly resulted in fuzz.
I am sure there must be a reason for all of this but any outside observer may be coming to the conclusion that perhaps.......well...it's all been said before.

I'm going to post this just once as I'm not in the mood to get involved with a troll war with various parties on this and other threads.
1. Glasgow MinMux. I've been involved with the DAB small scale trials since the very first one in Brighton when Rash put out the various seagulls on a single channel mux. I, like the other 52 applicants applied to OFCOM last March to run a trial mux. In June I was informed that Glasgow had been chosen for a SFN trial, but due to manufacturing constraints I would not receive the transmitter equipment from OFCOM until October. I agreed with OFCOM the amount of money I would allocate to the trial to cover its running and installation costs i.e £x thousand. That's real money Black Label, not your mythical type. Sorry John, can't recall if you still live at home with your parents? The equipment arrived and we installed the Cathkin site, which gives a cracking wee signal across the south east of the city out as far as Airdrie and Motherwell. Yes we have had problems with the Sergeant Law site - excellent site for broadcasting - nightmare for connectivity - the site owners have suddenly decided they want over £10k to install ip circuits rather than the proposed microwave link. As this is for a DAB trial, with no certainty of it being made permanent, I have, with OFCOMs knowledge, declined to go down this route and we are currently exploring other options including other sites. 2. The situation at YOUR Radio. When Gary and I took over in November we had some interesting eye opening practices awaiting us. One case a freelance contractor charged over £14k for roughly £600 worth of services. Other presenters were billing for shows before they'd even presented them. Members of the sales team were checking in at 9am and were at home watching TV by 10.30am. The station was haemorraging money so they could 'play radio stations'. As they were all 'working' for a large multi-national company that paid the invoices without question, they weren't fussed. Certain freelance presenters then took umbrage when I tried to enforce the contracts that they had signed with the previous owners and which we had inherited under the terms of the sale. They were actually aghast that they weren't actually employees and didn't have 'jobs for life'. YOUR Radio is a commercial radio station, not a community station supported by grants. If Gary and I hadn't bought the station in November, the multi-national would have closed it and handed the licences back. Period. 3. GO Radio. Yes I am a minority shareholder in GO Radio, and have invested real money under the governments SEIS scheme, unlike a lot of forum 'gurus' who all think it's an excellent idea as along as they don't have to invest anything in the station other than their 'wisdom'... I believe the SEIS scheme for investors is still open for GO Radio, and I'm sure Kevin would welcome any serious approach from potential investors (probably about £10k upwards) , so John here's your chance to get involved in 'proper' radio. I expect you won't though as you're more of a 'bedroom guru' rather than a 'doer' aren't you? 4. Obanair. And here we would like to welcome new poster account wullie-bone - Hello Craig, we've missed you - Was it really seven years ago that me and Kevin Cameron, yes of GO Radio, and who is actually a commercial pilot for his daytime job, looked at this. On paper it was viable until the government suddenly stopped the APD exemption for aircraft with 19 or less seats. This would have added up to £600k a year in costs, so the project was not viable anymore. For once the government did me a favour I expect. Anyway my attitude is that 'let's give it a go' to most things in life. I'm prepared to put my money where my mouth is and actually 'do' things. As in real life nothing is guaranteed to be a success, but generally I enjoy what I do. I'd rather be doing something productive rather than being like a lot of the forum geeks, sitting in their bedrooms and posting about how they'd do it if only they had the opportunity but life is sooo unfair... I look forward to seeing Black Label's application for the 96.3 FM licence when applications open shortly, but we know that's not going to happen is it... |

If I may, Spencer, can I ask when we are going to get more presenters on Your Radio? Particularly in the evening, I work for a major employer in the broadcast area and we loved the music and shoutouts on the backshift, it kept us going. The past week the staff have elected to change over to another station with a live presenter. The problem being that they might not want to change back. Times that by other businesses & houses in the area an I'm sure you're more than aware where I'm coming from. As Jean Luc once said.. Make it so.. please.

Spencer. You will know as well as I do thaf it is established industry 'custom and practice' for presenters to invoice for shows they haven't done, which means putting an invoice in on, say, the 20th of the month for payment around the end of the month, so that includes shows still to be done for the last few days of the month
I have never ever heard before of a scenario where jocks are 'actualy' treated in the same way as other service providers where that would mean an invoice at the end of January is paid, what, 30/60/90 days later or such, and a few days before the end of January is hardely the ideal time to spring such a scheme upon folk. Since Gary Marshall was the PD there for many months before the takeover the idea that there were 'interesting practices' to be discovered is an absurdity that beggars belief. If someone invoiced £14,000 for £600 of work I would suggest calling the police |

I'm sure Spencer and the others at SyGOphant Radio are big enough and ugly enough to speak for themselves.
