A disappointing year, compared to the high hopes of 12 months ago.

GO Radio continues as it has done since its launch in January 2016 as an unmanned non-stop automated hits music service. The playlist has been updated to include Christmas songs. The bit rate has been dropped to 80 kbts mono. The goradio.scot website as displayed on the DAB scrolling text, takes you to an Apache HTTP Server Test Page.

Timeless Radio was replaced by YOURXmas with automated non-stop automated Christmas hits. The timelessradio.uk website states: "...from early 2017 we'll be playing those classic Timeless tunes and songs that have stood the test of time."

Timeless Radio commenced 'test transmissions' of easy listening automated music and 'coming soon' announcements since 28 August 2016.

At least you've got a local mux.

No such luck in Belfast.

It's worth reflecting on where we were a year ago with all of this.

At this point before Christmas last year, GO had announced they were launching on January 11th. The local MUX was operating on one transmitter at Cathkin but it was assumed that the other TX at Glennifer would burst into life sometime imminently, maybe after the Christmas holidays.

On Monday January 11th nothing happened. No new TX was on and no GO launch, just non stop music and jingles/sweepers, as was before and as is to this day.

In the immediate period afterwards there was a large showbiz piece in the Herald featuring GO and (then) PD Kevin Cameron, and also Clyde took the decision to bar an ad for a live performance featuring putitive GO drivetime presenter Suzie McGuire. Clyde PD (or whatever title it is they hold these days) Brian Paige justified this by stating to the press that 'GO are pushing us hard in terms of market domination'.

Brian may have been over-egging the pudding but we live in a social media age where upstart ideas pose a real potential existential threat to established ones, as we see politically nowadays. At that point in time, GO was en route to becoming a local social media phenomenon and all of a sudden might have taken many tens of thousands of listeners off Clyde, particularly with Suzie on board and the obvious interest for various reasons.

That balloon was punctured in early February when Spencer Pryor, then co-owner of GO and sole owner local MUX and also co-owner of YOUR decided upon a different payment structure for his YOUR jocks whereby they would be treated as suppliers of services just as any other supplier of stuff to a business, i.e they have no entitlement to prompt payment. Much debate ensued regarding this on here but in February the positive forum glow towards GO had by then evaporated into 'well GO hasn't happened and now this......". Basically, what happened at YOUR impacted GO, justified or otherwise.

In early May, Spencer finally DID get his two local DAB TX's to sync and it had cracking coverage. Unfortunately this only lasted for a few days. To be clear though, and to be perfectly even-handed towards Spencer, this is a general issue with this experimental system. Cost issues also meant blocks of flats were used rather than the evvisaged Cathkin and Glennifer pro TX's.

In late May the applications for 96.3 were in, including one from GO majority backed by Lord Willie Haughey. The PR puff was that it would be launching imminently on DAB but this never occured and they failed to win the 96.3 licence. On June 23rd the Brexit vote occured which may have given food for thought for investors in things generally.

In late Summer/early Autumn Spencer announced Timeless Radio which has since followed the exact same pattern to GO of a year previously with launching September/ October and presenters announced, then a definate launch date that was missed and excuses due to technical complications.

Which brings us to now with both GO and Timeless (currently YOUR Xmas) providing just non stop music streams on the local MUX.

I wonder what 2017 will bring. It can't be any more disappointing.

Oh, and aye, Merry Christmas. That includes you, Mr Pryor.

No such luck in Belfast.
Dispite the Glasgow minimux problems (but has more stations than the regional mux) the recent 10 minimux report said the minimux model is financially visible, so looks like they will get full licences and looks like more will be advertised.
Last time BFBS was turned down for a Holywood Belfast licence but might now get one. BFBS have done well getting the SFN working in Aldershot and could get more licences.

Fingers crossed, and hopefully, a decent TX site.

With the local mux almost full now we need something.

The 'Timeless' label has been displayed from today, Monday 2nd January 2017 following the resumption of Timeless Radio on Saturday, 31st December 2016.

During December, the Timeless DAB slot was changed to YOURXmas playing automated Christmas hits and that ended on Friday 30th December 2016.

Timeless Radio is an automated mix of music with Jazz styles, light classics, lots of instrumentals. Probably music from the 1950s and early 1960s before 'pop music' was invented! No idents or announcements.

Also from the same stable as YOUR Radio and Timeless Radio is GO Radio, now at 80 kbts mono, continues with a mix of automated hits and still playing Christmas songs (Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas" for example) on 2nd January!
