.... Schools, schools, and more schools. LBC has become obsessed by them.

Shame Global couldn't stretch to three microphones. One of the Hairy Bikers (don't know which because not a particular fan) was left mumbling in the background.

SA says what he wants you to hear. Everyone uses Direct Debits for something or other.

You have to question, what planet is he on.

Slags off the BBC, but willing to take credit and the golden shilling.

You couldn't make it up!

There's more than two faces to Steve Allen.

Standing Orders maybe? You get to control them.

OR, a tea party - minus the tea. My favourite kind

I am listening to Nigel Farage - coz, I like his broadcasting style - which is clear & articulate. He is neither a bumbler or a mumbler.

Just been catching up on all of yesterday's posts whilst listening to fish face farridge. Great posts Cayce and G-S, well said.

Yes clear and articulate. He doesn't get his knickers in a twist like O'Brian.

He did a variation on the grammar school theme which was interesting. And, as you say, he's articulate. He's also polite and doesn't ridicule or intimidate callers. A natural broadcaster.

Morning all.

Farage has a great knowledge on the EU.

I've seen many a live video on Youtube and elsewhere showing the responses from the EU officials. Their facial expressions are mostly implacable as though set in stone. Do they have an intransigent attitude? A big Yes. When Cameron tried to seek compromises for staying in, he came back from the EU with little to nothing. They then put forward the idea of a European Army. Truly draconian, if not a little threatening at the thought of being subservient, donning cap etcetera to their form of ultra-control policing. I had to vote out upon a massive GUT reaction, no logic could ever have rounded me otherwise.

Good to hear Kieran (the remain supporter) put in his box by Farage. According to Kieran there will be no trade with Europe after Brexit, people in Britain won't buy French or German goods and he won't be able to fly the EU flag. Farage managed to calm him down and has dealt with callers both for and against with good grace.

I stand corrected .... Nick said last night he went to a comprehensive school.
This is what happens when you use Wikipedia as your source of information

Nick was a bit a bit cheeky last night. Whilst LBC were playing Nigel's promo for his show Nick managed to sneak in his 'I'm a nutcase' soundbite onto the end of it.

Excellent show from Nick last night. He seems back on form.

I listened to the first part of Nick's show at home, the rest of it while driving, then sitting waiting at Heathrow airport.
Martin Rosen was very helpful with supportive traffic information.
One statement Nick Abbot made, which he was hesitant about saying, was (to paraphrase) 'If you come from a Middle Class background you have more chance of passing the Eleven Plus, therefore you are more intelligent.'
This is a very controversial statement (he knew it would be) and one that I find difficult to agree with. There are many kinds of intelligence (emotional and otherwise).
Also, what about the blurred lines between 'intelligence' and an ability to retain knowledge?
I've always disliked the whole Class thing, anyway. Does that make me a Liberal?
Labels, eh?
This word 'binary' (Cayce's favourite) keeps coming back to haunt me:
Nigel Farage discussing flags focuses on an either/or situation where you either have national or EU flags. What's wrong with having both?

The media has been full of criticism of Theresa May for not showing her cards in respect of Brexit negotiations with the EU. Can you blame her in light of Cameron's promises which fell on stony ground after returning from the EU?

BIB. So it should! James can't help himself for repeating it constantly, whilst admitting he has a liking for saying "binary". I can't understand him when he likes to convey he thinks of himself as a wordsmith. Whatever happened to James's personal dictionary, have the pages become worn, or torn out? Dare I say, his dialogue is generally wearing thin although he still has occasional good days where we're not subjected to mucho codswallop.

I think he said that to be controversial but he didn't get many callers disagreeing with him!

Obviously there are different types of intelligence and skills but I think the point being made was that the middle classes are generally more academic because that is reflected in their jobs. The parents tend to show a greater interest in their childs education and matched with the fact the middle classes are more likely to have wider life experiences i.e. travel a lot more ... it is all part of their education.

I went to a grammar school. The difference back then though was there were lots of them and in all sorts of areas. Mine was in the middle of a council estate and I had to get 2 buses. No one there, as I recall, came a from middle class family but the school was very good and had an excellent reputation. There was, crucially, no catchment areas either ,so where you lived didn't matter.

It all comes down to giving parents choice.

Grammar Schools were not the problem, it was the lack of choices/alternatives if you didn't get into one. Secondary Modern schools were diabolical. Grammar Schools and comprehensives can run side by side.

Sorry if this has already been established on here, but has the David Mellor (& Crick) show officially bitten the dust now?

I think that the problem was one of attitude coupled with funding.

People were seen as 'less' rather than just 'different' and that of course leads to all sorts of problems. It doesn't help when all the funding and best teachers are funneled one way only.

I don't think streaming is a bad thing at all, but it's how you make it work in practice that is key. And that's a hard balance to get right.

Absolutely.

I remember thinking when I did the 11+ 'please let me pass because I really don't want to go to so and so school' ...

They really were dumping grounds. That can't happen again.

That's why we need proper alternatives that are funded correctly and no catchment areas.

When I was looking for a school for my daughter I was fortunate enough that I found one that was academic enough for her to flourish if she was so inclined but also had an extensive arts programme.

I've quite enjoyed the coverage on LBC and some of the presenters have surprised me with their views. However, as is always the case with LBC ... ENOUGH NOW !!

No, it hasn't

Katie said she was just keeping the seat warm and Mellor is still presenting on Global stations but he has apparently disappeared from the LBC presenters list !! No one knows.

I'd have thought he would have been back by now if he was returning though.

Did anyone hear Nick A recounting his tale of bumping into Mellor in the lift ??
