Some people on Radio are cringeworthy, Steve is a personable guy at times, but occasionally he goes off on wild rants about nobodies - just because the Daily Mail have featured same nobodies. .. Entertaining sometimes, but equally deserving of criticism.....

He reminds me of someone in a pub......reading through the paper slamming certain people....bragging about salary etc.
Nothing wrong with criticism especially when it's witty, but when I do visit this thread it feels like I've wondered into an old people's home with the residents average age 100+ not moving from thier chairs and unable to change the station or find something else to do to fill the their days apart from uttering the same old same about SA, who they have cheek to criticise for being repetitive.

Could it be something to do with talkRADIO launching tomorrow?

So who's going to switch over and give it a go?
i'll record some of the shows, don't know when i'll find to time to listen much though.

I think its the move to click bait news we're moving to, on twitter i regularly see them pushing clips 'listen to the shocking moment when J'OB confronted ####!' etc..
That's one of the reasons I unfollowed LBC on Twitter.

I didn't like that and their use of phrases like 'taking a caller down'

Has there been a slump in listeners calling LBC?

Notice that there has been an increase recently in nutcases getting past the switchboard. Some totally mad and others just making prank calls such as the guy who rang in claiming to be seriously worried about the effect that "DUST" was having on us
I heard that one, i have a feeling its one of Iain Lee's old listeners recording some new stuff as it was a classic old school prank call where he was serious at the start and got Ferrari relaxed before getting a bit odd and delivering the sucker punch that sadly got dumped.

If Fanny Allen chooses to repeat the "same old, same old" nonsense day in, day out that I think is worthy of criticism then from time to time I may choose to criticise him about it on the LBC General Chit Chat board.

When he comes up with some new nonsense that I think is worthy of criticism then I might decide to criticise him for that instead.

Hope that is ok with you.

I don't want to creep you out, but that's the sort of thing Steve Allen says!

I am hopeful that Iain Lee will provide a decent alternative to the oleaginous slang merchant Collins.

Why some think Steve Allen is worthy of serious debate, escapes me totally. He does what he does, (a bitchfest) why let him get underneath your skin? Okay, he does go on overload over certain celebs which creates the impression he's vindictive but if you put tongue-in-cheek firmly he shouldn't get to you that much? Or should he?

I don't find Collins unctuous in any way, far from it, rather brash would be my summary who's not that persuasive in his approach.

He has 6 days of shows to fill with rants and wind ups to make the 2 or so hours to go by and fill some time, it's just some people take it way to seriously.

Have you not switched over to Duncan Barkes on BBC London, tw? He's much better than IC since moving stations.

I shall give Iain Lee a go. If he's like he was first time around on LBC, then my visit will not last very long, but if he's doing his BBC show, then I reckon he could be quite good.

Thanks for giving me a nudge about DB. Could not be doing with his LBC persona, but it sounds like he is a different proposition on BBC London. I've never listened to Iain Lee so can approach his effort with an open mind.

It is a good phrase. It's like when some is arguing with you directly your going to take them down a peg or two. So they take the caller off air

Don't take Steve too seriously he's got a certain spot where he will rave at certain celebs. Peter Andre this morning quite kind to him though he can't fill seats for his gigs and could have done it on his patio. Actually most of it is true what he says. A lot of them are just in it for the money and don't come upto scratch cause they are scared to sit in a supermarket checkout, or stack shelves etc

Paul Ross doesn't stand a chance against the breakfast show titan that is Nick Ferrari but Julia Hartley-Brewer might just win over some listeners tired of James O'Brien's antics.

He doesn't get to me "that much" or else i wouldn't listen. In general he no worse than mildly irritating and it just flows over me. In fact, that's why I started listening to him - because I found that at 4 or 5 in the morning his stream of semi-conscious inanities and bitching about celebrities featured in the Mail's showbiz section were (and still are) more likely to lull me back to sleep than anything containing even the slightest cogent thought.

Unfortunately he sometimes goes beyond the supposedly "tongue in cheek" bitchiness and launches in on people that have done nothing to deserve it or brings his unique view of life to bear on situations and events inappropriate for such treatment. Sometimes he is just an risibly stupid, ignorant and bitter old fool.

As you say, nothing that he does is worthy of being taken very seriously but what radio presenter is? Assuming that this board isn't intended only for the serious debates about JOB or Petrie Hoskin, this seems like the right sort of venue where one might highlight his errant or eccentric behaviour.

Alternatively, if this doesn't fly you could just assume I am the world's biggest David Beckham fan and I am trying to give Steve some of his own medicine.

I will be tuning in to listen to JHB and Jon Holmes. No point expressing an opinion until I've heard some of the output from their shows.

Interestingly, according to Iain Lee (on his Facebook page), it appears that callers will be charged quite heavily as compared to the local call tariff charged by LBC.

Mobile callers will be charged a whopping 45p per minute!

I believe TalkRadio have missed an opportunity here to engage their listeners.

In one of its previous guises LBC used to offer callers a Freecall number.

I see the new Talk Radio are scrolling on DAB 'The home of Paul Ross at Breakfast'. As has been said previously no match for 'Nick Ferrari at Breakfast' unless he has completely changed his style from LBC and BBC London.

That's a matter of opinion, of course. Personally, I'd have Paul Ross over Ferrari any day of the week, but I'll probably be sticking with Vanessa anyway. Mind you, I'd have a tub of lard over the unpleasant Ferrari any day of the week...

weekend afternoons and evenings are usually quieter. People are busy doing other things.

Out of interest does anyone quite like Petrie in preference to the blandness of other current female presenters?
She's my favourite female LBC presenter, followed by Beverley.

Could it be something to do with talkRADIO launching tomorrow?

I don't think that has anything to do with it. I'll be listening to TalkRADIO at times tomorrow, but whether I stay tuned in will depend on the quality of what I hear and how much it interests me. Having the choice will be a new experience, especially when JOB and JHB are up against each other. They will not be as wide apart as when Jon Gaunt had that slot.

PS. Can't see there being an avalanche of replies somehow.
I listen to her mainly out of wonderment. She is hugely ill-informed about the subjects she chooses to discuss, she shouts, she has a poor vocabulary and misuses words, and, lastly, she has seen and done everything.

Just out of interest to see if LBC had changed their pitch to fend off the new competition I listened to SA between 5.30 to 6.

Now I know many people like him, and I admit he is like a cot mobile for those who just want a fun & live voice to keep them entertained. I also know why he annoys people.. because he talks utter rubbish as if facts... if you don't know or you don;’t care, it doesn’t annoy you – and that is ultimately fine.

So how did that 30 minutes go?

He asked "can you still buy bloomer bread?"
His legion of know nothings gave him 101 different answers to what artisan bread was... "it means it is gluten free" said one helpfully... who will continue to think that because Steve knows nothing.

Several times he said he didn’t know what the law was about something, he said a lot of times he didn’t know about what he was talking about... But somehow he gets to waffle on for 2.5 hours about things he doesn’t know, unopposed and backed up by people who know little more... who he reads out.. oh... leading Britain's conversation or just losing brain cells

He of course paraphrased a newspaper article while using his well worn, says without thinking, linking/filler words... e.g. he waffled "this is how it works... " only he then couldn’t match that to the bit he just read so he said "oh I wont tell you that" (or words like that) before 2 sentences later saying "this is how it works" again (it is a reflex) and then giving the next paragraph out of the paper. He clearly knows so many definitive facts about North Korea.. I would have thought Celebrity Mastermind have tried to recruit him several times for their show but he can never agree what specialised subject he will answer questions on.

But best of all he even added one of those “time absorbing waffle / disclaimer words” to his own story! When he recounted what he had done he added an "apparently" at the end of the line... how can something he did be "apparently" - it is just waffle, the verbal equivalent to linking randomly shuffled dominoes by lining up matching dot ends... and many people just like the noise and that is fine.

At 6am... I turned over to TalkRadio... lets see what they can do.

He glories in his own ignorance. Of course, a cynic would say that it's just a ploy to get the faithful texting in in their multitudes to enlighten him. It keeps them listening, makes them feel useful and his employers get a rake-off from the texts. After all, surely nobody can be that stupid, or can they?

Morning all.
