I think those principles can be regarded as somewhat flexible in such circs. I was wondering a few weeks back if he might be needing to 'consider his position' when the station began running ads for Uber - a business he condemned so persistently.
Still, that radio job needs retaining more than ever - tv is going to be out, judging by his appearance on yesterday's One Show - he looked so awkward, sitting oaf-like and speaking in a strangely inarticulate manner. |

Has Nick Abbot left LBC? There's speculation on another thread that it may be so, but I think it's merely just chineese whispers.

Think it's just a poster messing with everyone. Nick made a joke a few months back about leaving ,can't remember why, but it was all blown up out of proportion and people took it seriously. |

I imagine that there was lots of beard twiddling by Gobber as he read that email about Nige joining 😀
Here we go, 20 minutes about how anyone that thinks immigrants should learn English is a "Chomping racist"............he really has lost it 🙀 Nick's standard line is if I moved to France or Spain you have to learn the language to survive.... and hasn't moved from that.... Of course they don't need to be compulsory nor should they be free... but there is no need to learn if interpreters are used by authorities and leaflets no longer in multiple languages....that's the difference...oops little bit of politics...sorry.... ![]() ![]() Quote:
And...... as said in his introduction, why don't the expats in Spain learn Spanish 😉
Speaking for myself, I have ....... and at my own expense. There are no freebies here. Those who don't bother, have to rely on very expensive interpreters, paid for by themselves !! Also ..James, in the Costa del sol, hospital & doctor's receptionists will not speak English. Either learn the language or pay for an interpreter. It really is a non-story ![]() Happy Thursday to you All x Ps. One snipe apiece at KH & NF ......" wash your mouth out." and reference to the train language scenario ![]() so as JOB is so pro Europe does that make the French and Italians chomping racists by expecting residents there to learn their own language? what a dichotomy.... |

You seem to be imagining rather a lot there.
Like you imagined she has spent the last twenty years at the BBC, that's imagined as well. ![]() In colloquial or accepted English that would be accepted as being the last Twenty years... (especially is in fact even longer) |

Nick F firmly believes in immigrants learning English....I wonder if he will thank him on hand over from now on as my "chomping racist colleague"? so surely he won't want to work with such a "racist"

its estimated (from census data) that there are 138,000 who cant speak english at all in the uk. the issue is overstated by the right .. cant think why though
As I said I don't care if they do or not...138,000 or not.... and actually that's even worse as that is a low number..... so what we really should not do especially if that figure is accurate then is make public sector documents available in multiple languages AND let the public purse pay for expensive interpreters in police stations/hospitals,etc. I'd like to live in Italy or Southern France... I don't expect them to pay for my tuition....as English is such a widely spoken language anyway there really is no excuse for anyone moving here not to have a basic grasp of it....it's not racist it's practical.... |

A couple of things. Firstly does it really matter what years Shelagh was at the BBC. I think it is sufficient to know that she has spent most of her broadcasting career at the BBC. Are the precise dates relevant?
Secondly, there are now two presenters "on the team sheet" (as NF likes to call it!) with the initials NF. For clarification can we say Nick F or Nigel F when referring to them. (BTW I was referring to Nick F above, but you can see how confusing it can be). |

BIB. A caller who was long-winded because he couldn't speak the language properly was quickly dismissed, yet J O'B screams "racist" given the opportunity. Are listeners' supposed to forget his intolerance towards a foreign caller yesterday? If so, where does hypocrisy feature perchance?
There are kinder ways of dispensing with a caller who's taking up valuable airtime than that, I would have thought. he isnt a neo liberal (economics) but is happy to embrace its fruits. Quote:
Is that on a par with Gobber being the holiday fill in on Newsnight, a late night graveyard slot with a reducing audience..........I know how you like facts😀
bbc dont employ lefty socialist pro palestinian presenters, i cant think of one on newsnight or on bbc news. Quote:
The news that Nigel Farage is to have a programme on LBC, has attracted the MSM. I liked this sentence from The Guardian.

Quite. I would imagine O'Brian must be seriously considering his position at the station now. Is it really possible for a member of the metropolitan elite to work in a company that insists on employing not just one but two "Nazis"?
Is the thought of ditching a £300,000 a year job really something a champagne socialist can consider sacrificing in the name of his alledged "principles"? After all it'll cost him a fortune to have the studio fumigated every day before he can use it. Quote:
Is any poster going to say anything nice about Shelagh Fogarty? I think she's a bloody sight more sensible than 'the bloke' that's on before her.

As someone who remembers Clive from his Sven from Swiss Cottage days, it's been heartbreaking to hear him being straitjacketed by degrees and made to cover the same topics that everyone else has already done to death during the course of the day.
Such a shame and a waste of an excellent broadcaster. Quote:

He sat there with splayed legs (display) like the oaf he is (thank you). He looked from right to left as if he didn't have a clue how to contribute or join in. He was discombobulated because he had to look up from the sofá to the Brexit MP on his left. (He's getting so used to looking down from his little radio mike). |

it's the government who want to ensure immigrants can speak English. You may say that's the right which may be the case (though government of last few years is centre anyway)
I don't expect them to pay for my tuition....as English is such a widely spoken language anyway there really is no excuse for anyone moving here not to have a basic grasp of it....it's not racist it's practical.... the reason why documents etc are in different languages is to create a sense of belonging, something that immigrants can buy into as they settle and begin to integrate. by keeping them at arms length and making things difficult ( as has been the case with first and second generation) one will obviously find closed communities that have no incentive whilst they view a hostile host community. paying for tuition is a very cheap investment in return for a productive member of society that will contribute more than the cost of any tuition. it really depends how far sighted government action can be. if parents talk/read/write english then it is more likely their children will also before the time they begin school. i suspect why many brits are against free movement across europe is because like you they can only speak one language whilst many europeans do have some level of english ability. unfortunately the dabate with respect to the current political environment is tinged with racism |

Spot on. I can't imagine him leaving myself. Money talks. Even more than him at the beginning of his shows. There's the Chiswick mortgage payments and the private schooling costs to meet after all.

the 138,000 are mostly first generation immigrants of some 40-50 years ago.

Leaflets don't give them a welcoming sense of belonging it just makes them lazy instead....No it's not cheap for tuition or interpreters and is not a,"cheap" price to pay....also as CC says classes run but she pays for hers..... My great grandparents were thrown off their lands by the Kaiser more than 50 years ago......... they learnt English because they had to to survive and prosper.... and set up businesses becoming productive despite an occasionallyhostile community at times that they changed their name for a time (like the Sax Coburgs) ![]() No free movement back then.... Didn't need multi lingual leaflets to want to mix they were grateful for a safe place and opportunity for success..... It's not about not being able to learn another language opposing free movement it's sensible controls as the infrastructure isn't up to it and the density currently too high let alone security issues....... are Australia America Canada all racist for having immigration controls? No of course not neither is Britain or anyone wanting a check on numbers.... |

I'd forgotten Sven. I assume you knew who he was. A private joke which Clive handled beautifully and which encouraged Sven to contribute increasingly.
For decades I've wondered if Clive knew from the start or whether there was some kind of EUREKA moment for him. |

Another gotta love Steve moment. Apparently if we are lonely we should just shout at the radio. OK Steve but will it make your dinner when you're not feeling well enough to do it yourself; will it give you a hug just cos you need one? Emmm.
