He will only let callers who agree with him say their piece, but will instantly talk over sarcastically and then fade down those who aren't in agreement with his one sided myopic view of the world. I know he gets a lot ignorant hateful nuts calling his show, who should be screened and not let on air, but there are intelligent, interesting educated people who have a different point of view, who get on air. But in James' world though, they are all wrong and he's right. However... I still maintain that you could be describing any number of LBC presenters there. I reckon the management have asked presenters to be more polemical and get people's backs up. I think it's a business decision that LBC took and I think that even the more measured presenters are coming over as more argumentative these days. |

Petrie's show has been rubbish today, just when you think she can't get any worse.....

Petrie did not mention 'Project Fear' in reply to Farage 's casual mention of Turkey's 70 million people being free to 'come over here' in case of Bremain.

Here Boris goes on LBC sounds like its going to be a bit long winded .
Its vote leave for him then. He seems to want us to vote out so we can get a better deal then his boss did. |

Listening to James O' Brien last week was bizarre. He seems to have brought his strongly held personal belief regarding religion, particularly Christian, and tried to spin it into a logical argument that couples with kids should always marry, and kids of divorced parents, or those who only have one parent be it through death etc, turn out to be worthless, more or less. And shoehorning his love for the Pope and his supporters into some bizarre argument about idiot Trump, that no one in their right mind would take seriously or is bothered about.
It has always struck me that his stint on LBC was some kind of ongoing audition for the BBC Newsnight job which he craves so deeply, so he needs to be seen as a "right on Lefty" But he has to be a joke, he will close down any discussion/caller that he doesn't agree with, while fading them out and then insulting them when then are gone. He is one of the most unprofessional, biased DJs I've ever heard. And that's all he is a DJ, not an open mined, professional journalist. Rude, arrogant and close minded, all in a days ratings/ranting for James. "Phone now, you will get through"... To an idiot The output from James O'Brien makes complete sense to me. The only possible response (of a sane person) to Right Wing politics and Right Wing politicians is........Heavy Sarcasm. Trump is an idiot. He is promoting an idiotic (and shameful) healthcare policy. Here it is: Huh? Obamacare? Why can't those poor people with treatable conditions just curl up and die? Just like they always did. Nice. I am with the Pope on this one. The only possible response to Right Wing Politicians in the USA is........Heavy Sarcasm. In the UK we have a PM and govt who gave Wayne Rooney a £12,000 per week tax cut at the exact moment that they were "fining" people for the spare box room they are using to store their Wheelchair. The only possible response to this is............Heavy Sarcasm. The only thing wrong with James O'Brien tackling issues with a distinctly In Your Face Left Wing point of view for 3 hours daily is that the show does not last for 4 hours. It seems to me that there are some listeners who do not approve. Surely it must be possible to figure out why this is.

@Landis, I'm far from Right Wing, in fact I hate labels, but JOB style of presenting, cutting callers off, belittling them talking over them EVEN If they have a valid but different point is hardly the height of professional journalism, is it ?
Agree to differ I think

He is hardly an idiot. He is a razor sharp Journalist with a Left Wing POV. It is a shame that many callers find him too hot to handle but that is hardly JOB's fault. The callers should not feel too bad. Universities Minister Jo Johnson could not handle JOB on Newsnight. MP Daniel Kawczynski also turned up on Newsnight with plenty of attitude but came off second best. (How is that legal action going Daniel?)

He may appear to be to Thatcherites or those even to the Right of her (they've been plenty of them in here). But really his politics are perhaps slightly Left Centrist, but no further removed than that. Eg he's brazenly opposed to Corbyn's politics. His views are closer to the Lib Dems than any other political party. |

JOB show is designed to make listeners take another look at a subject hence his fifteen minutes or so at the start when he gives some background and why he has reached where he is in his thinking.
Maybe he is short with callers because they have not thought about the topic and failed to answer the fairly specific questions he puts to set up the debate. His show is not for callers who just want to repeat whatever the days paper has to say. If dog whistle radio is what you want then JOB is going to grind your gears but if you want to perhaps hear a side of an argument that maybe passes you by then this is a good show. He is frequently rude to callers but IMO they ask for it a lot of the time. If you call him up and don't have anything constructive to add then you get the rudeness. I hear a lot of things from LBC presenters that annoy me and TBH JOB giving a caller a verbal kicking comes way down the list. |

I agree with a lot of that, and JOB is not as good a listen as he used to be. It does annoy me when he goes into attack-dog mode even on the coherent callers.

IMO NO caller deserves rudeness and sarcasm unless they are offensive in which case they should be cut off. It seems to me JOB issues a 'see if you can last' challenge to listeners and he always has the upper hand - not big and not clever

Have heard him many times change his view after speaking with a caller who added something new. Like I said if I listed the things I heard on LBC which I didn't like then rudeness would not be high up on it. For me the message is more important than the messenger.

Don't often get the chance to listen to LBC at this time. But, while cooking the Sunday Roast, I have to say that Clive Bull is presenting a brilliant programme.

Not sure how you can judge why he would change his view if it is not from what is being said to him.

I fly in and out of the UK and every single time I have had to present my passport coming back. We can put as many checks as we want at the borders and it is not the EU who cut the number of immigration officers and custom and excise staff. Those cuts came directly from Westminster. Keep going Clive |

I never said it did
I was replying to the poster who was saying Don had put Steve in his place Several celebs who have been in including Celia Imrie have known him for just as long and they tend to treat it as a chat with a friend To be honest I think that the show suffers for two reasons Firstly with some guests twenty odd minutes (with adverts and news removed ) isn't enough to even scratch the surface And secondly since Global took control they don't allow music tracks or extracts of shows anymore something that made the programme more interesting Many of the guests don't float my boat but it's still an oasis in the middle of politics and health issues that saturate the rest of the LBC schedule I was quoting you as a basis for making my own point. Not everything discussed in relation to Steve Allen on this thread has an automatic connection to you. Love_You |

JO'B is going to be in his element, tomorrow.
His favourite Boris being in the news - there will be plenty of opportunities to mention Nigel ![]() My heart is sinking, already, for the callers that will walk into the trap. |
