Cat: Ripping up paper all the sudden

The cat we got has been really well behaved since we brought it back to ours. It's an indoor cat and, as far as we know, always has been. We've had it for over a month now, it's shown no sign of trouble but, last night and again today, it's started ripping up TV magazines and paper and we are at a loss as it why it's only doing in the past 24 hours. Just wondering if anybody has any ideas?

Has he/she deemed his cat litter tray too dirty? (Even though it isn't)

Fussy and clean annoyances are cats.

We can always tell when the litter tray is too dirty, it starts to meow A LOT

But to answer your question, we change it a lot. It's definitely not going to be that, but thank you for your input

To some cat owners, it is purrfectly normal! It could be anything from wanting attention to boredom. It might want to do its claws. It might like playing with paper and like the noise it makes and it becomes a great hunting game. It might have a sore tooth.

Have a vet look it over if you are worried. I would just put it down to normal behaviour.

My cat used to love being covered with sheets of newspaper and fighting her way out. One of her favourite games.

My old cat used to have a liking for toilet roll. That also started out of the blue but was just her. If a loo roll was in reach it was destroyed.

Why do you refer to your cat as "it" instead of "he" or "she"?

As for the ripping, probably boredom.

Indoor cats need plenty of things to scratch provided, toys to play with, thinks to leap on and off of and owners to keep them amused and play with them, it is more than likely bored.

Ripping up paper is a fairly common cat habit. Our old one used to rip up the TV Times and Radio Times, which were usually on the floor.

Might be a little bit of boredom. Do you play with it often? Does he / she have a scratching post / cat tree / toys etc?

one of ours goes through phases of eating/shredding cardboard boxes. Once she ate the cover of a music book that I'd borrowed... that was an interesting one to explain to the person I'd borrowed it from!

We play with her all the time, get it chasing things round the room and, we got it a scratching post but she never uses it...she has stopped ripping paper/magazine's up now as well lol

Could be after attention. Our Charlie rips up anything he can when he's trying to get us up to feed him at FIVE O' BLEEDING CLOCK every morning. My wife has her school papers in a number of plastic bags in the bedroom and Charlie tears the bags to shreds. The noise is something awful, especially so early on.

Not really unusual.
My cat can get into my junk room and tear papers I keep for painting to shards.

Really need to get that door fixed to keep him out.

You really shouldn't let your Wife out that time of the night.

Hope your Cat's ok too.

One of our two cats started in on the paper thing a year ago. Envelopes, preferably with mail inside them, were her speciality. Fortunately she graduated to card so these days her weekend treat is that we pick up an old box from the supermarket, put it down on the floor whereupon she jumps inside it and demolishes it from the inside. A bit more practice and I'm hiring her out to earn her keep as a shredding utility.
