I know this genre is relatively new and there were never a lot of dubstep artists but is dubstep dead now? It's golden era was around 2010-12 but since then it seems to have died out.

I loved Modestep (who turned more rock with their later release, wtf?), Nero, who didn't seem as good when they released their follow up, there's Zomboy, but like it just seems there are no good dubstep releases anymore?

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I always tended to have to look for anyway really. It all seems to be trap, EDM and rap music. No speicific dubstep, I miss the heavy bass drops etc.

Sadly, I can't point you in the right direction.
As i have no idea what on earth you are talking about.

Whatever it is, it sounds extremely 'chavvy' blud.

Yes.

Just like how dancehall became popular in 2003...and ultimately ended in 2003.

Personally, I don't think any genre really "dies", it just fades and ends up going back to it's roots and how it started.

I imagine if you looked for it, you'd still find a fairly active dubstep scene.

Look at how "Nu Metal" was all the vogue many years ago. I imagine a lot of people probably assume that "died" but even up until last year you had bands releasing Nu Metal material - Papa Roach and Bring Me the Horizon being two that spring to mind.

Dubstep was decent when the likes of Plastician, Kode9, Benga, DMZ, Mala, Skream, Burial, etc were first coming through around the early-mid noughties. It became awful about 2009 with Brostep, the overuse of the Massive presets by producers and tracks always having 'a drop' became the norm and grew popular. Even the original mid-noughties producers moved on and are now producing tracks that can be categorised as anything but the millenial Dubstep sound these days. It was well and truly milked to death at a rapid pace.

Wow, so many music snobs who think they're funny but probably know nothing about music and listen to the standard indie band who is so alternative

So glad I have decent music taste.

Do people make up the silly name first and then try to think of some kind of musical style to go with it?

Sorry but dubstep just seems like a series of completely random and unrelated noise made by a computer and when you watch how it's done live with Skrillex literally jamming on a random computer like it's a guitar, it's quite hilarious.

As for the insinuation that those of us who dislike dubstep must like random indie wank, nice try but no. However I can at least give indie dudes props for generally having the knowledge to play actual musical instruments.

Yeah because playing an instrument automatically means the music you make is brilliant

Bit of a massive generalisation there, no?

I used to enjoy a bit of dubstep back in the day.

Bring me to the Horizon are not nd never have been nu-metal!! Nothing close to it. There has never been any rapping in BMTH songs.
Faith no More are closer to nu-metal than BMTH. Old Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Korn and lImp Bizkit were definitely nu-metal. Papa Roach and Korn still have some nu-metal characteristics but far less than they used to.

The review of "That's The Spirit" in The Guardian begs to differ - obviously this is just for this specific album, which was what i meant, but i'm fully aware they've never been "Nu Metal"

yep pretty much spot on.

ive seen this happen with 'new genres' ever since merseybeat. in reality these styles never last long in the public eye, they have their 12-24 months of fame then die out. only the loyal fans carry on listening, buying, producing there styles.

so dubstep isnt dead, its had its moment of popularity in the spotlight, thats all.

BMTH's new single is being played a lot on the radio at the moment, alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.

It's pretty embarrassing tbh, bet the scene kids (if they still exist) are mortified.

Kind of sad you'd dig into the depths of the forum to find a post from when I was a teenager
