Advice about my daughters hair!
Sally77
21-02-2016
I need advice about my 10 year daughters hair please!!

It seems to be getting greasy very quickly, she has shoulder length hair, good condition and quite thick.

I used to wash it 2 times a week but within 2 days is looking greasy, so now washing 3 times a week.

Have tried various shampoo, including adults and children products, and now using Philip Kingsley for kids (as I use his products) but still not much luck, and when I condition her hair it seems to be worse!!

Can anyone recommend any shampoos which I could try please which may help or advice on anything I am doing wrong. I appreciate it could be her age and hormones!

Thanks very much.

My daughter has been using this during the week as the gym makes her hair really greasy with good results. It's half price in Superdrug just now so you could try it cheaply.

Thank you for your help, will give it a go!

Sally if her hair gets greasy really quickly, then omit the conditioner altogether. If the ends are dry(ish), then only put the conditioner on the ends.

Are you currently putting the conditioner allover her hair?

Conditioner is only needed to moisturize dry hair so not everyone needs it.

Shampoo removes grease, conditioner puts it back.

stop using the conditioner for a while

Having grown up with greasy hair, I find the shampoo brand itself doesn't make all that much difference. I'd use something basic and non-flashy like Head N Shoulders or Aussie (which is my preferred brand.) The process I use which pretty much guarantees non-greasy hair for me is:

1. Ensure you brush out her hair before she gets in to the shower/bath. You want it as tangle free as possible.
2. Damp her hair with a little warm water (not too hot or too cold.) Wash the hair once with a little shampoo. Rinse that well. Squeeze out the water. Then wash it a second time immediately after with a normal amount of shampoo. Rinse out VERY well. You do not want any amount of shampoo remaining. Again, squeze out the excess water.
3. Condition the hair at the ends only, if you really need to condition at all. (I admit I do cheat with this one but I definitely notice a difference in how quickly grease builds up when I just condition the tips to when I condition all of my hair.
4. After washing, definitely don't use any products in it apart from possibly a very light leave in conditioner if you're worried about frizzy ends. Again, only do this on the ends if you have to use it.
5. This might be a little controversial for a ten year old, I'm not sure if it's seen as a potentially harmful product, but use a little dry shampoo the first day you start to notice it's greasy. Baptiste is really good. Don't go overboard with it, just a couple of quick sprays and massage it softly into the roots. Or spray it in the night before, when she goes to bed, for a more natural look. I know some people use talc instead of dry shampoo so if you're really against sprays, maybe try that instead.

Hope that helps.

A 10 year old can't possibly need a hair wash 3 times a week. Unless she is rolling in dirt at school, her hair won't be dirty and the constant shampooing is stripping the natural oil out.

Wash her hair once a week and, as others have said, only condition the ends, if at all. (I never used conditioner as a child because it wasn't invented and I only conditioned my children's hair if it was really long, to get the tangles out).

Thank you all for your kind advice.

I do only condition once a fortnight and is only on the ends, she has so much hair I do have to use a little even just on the ends.

As much as I appreciate the advice burton07 I couldn't do it 1 a week it looks awful if I did that.

Luckily, since trying this new shampoo we are down to 2 times a week and with all your tips I am hoping I can keep it like this.

Thanks again everyone I appreciate all the comments.

Clarify the hair, this can work wonders on greasy hair.

I started getting very greasy hair around 10 years of age too so I completely understand.

I used to use Alberto Balsam Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo and Conditioner, can be bought cheaply at 95p-£1 or 4 for £3. This used to clean my hair nicely and it smells lovely. The apple version is good too.

I also used to use Herbal Essences Fresh Balance but nowhere seems to stock that one anymore. Dazzling Shine is a good alternative to that one though. Apple Head and Shoulders works well too for oily hair.

I also echo the comments about dry shampoo should you feel it is necessary. I started using it at this time and still do use it, but you really only need a quick couple of sprays. The cheaper ones work just as good, however I would avoid the Herbal Essence/Aussie/Pantene ones. I wouldn't really recommend talc either as it is difficult to wash out and makes hair very powdery feeling. If you don't want to use spray versions, Lush do a powder one called No Drought which is fantastic.

Don't use conditioner at all & try to limit how much you wash it, the more often you wash it the quicker it will get greasy. I use Joico Cleanse Shampoo and it helps a bit, as well as makes it easier to brush through without conditioner. http://www.carltonshairdesign.com/#!...2-a73abcfed725

I have this problem but still only wash it twice a week - I refuse to do it any more! Does your daughter touch her hair much? That makes it worse. But just condition the very ends too. I just wash the scalp and let the suds run through - it's the best I can do

Hi. We do only condition the ends. No she doesn't touch it at all really, though obviously I don't know when she is at school!

We have gone back to twice a week as the shampoo we are using isn't too bad.
