I know exactly how this feels blueblade, but little Amber knew how much you loved her, the beautiful happy years you had together can never be taken away, she had a beautiful life because of you x

Grief is such an unpredictable thing, I am actually dreading the spring and the summer, I don't know how I am going to get through them without my little one, she adored the warmer months so so much, we'd play in the garden for literally hours.

I really hope you are feeling better, blueblade, and OP and anyone else who is riding this storm x

Amber was upset about going in her carrier as she knew it would mean a trip somewhere she didn't like and didn't want to go to. She didn't know it was her last trip, please be re-assured about that.
Maybe having a last day or two with you would've been good for her - but if she were in pain it really is best not to prolong the suffering for her and a second sedation would've caused her upset all over again.
You clearly loved her very much and I'm sure she did understand and appreciate that throughout her life with you.

Thank you all so much for all the replies. I wasn't expecting so many people to offer such kind words and their own sad experiences with their pets. I'm so sorry to everyone else who have lost their furry friends. I have other cats so they can be a comfort, especially as they all liked Phoebe. I just miss my little friend so much. It's horrible losing pets.

First of all I would just like to pass on my condolences to everyone else in this thread who have lost a pet...

I lost my beautiful cat Kohl on Sunday night - he was acting like he was coughing up a furball for about a week so I took him the vets on Friday 11th March - they examined him and said his lungs were congested and his heart was erratic. Took him back last Monday for all the scans and they put him on 1 aspirin every 3 days and 2 tablets a day for asthma. He wasn't right on Wednesday and again on Thursday so I went home on Thursday lunchtime and took him straight back to the vets who gave him some beta blockers. He had another asthma attack Friday night so back to the vets again Saturday morning where they said he was fine. I knew his breathing was too fast though - Sunday I checked on the internet and it said they should breath 20-30 times a minute but Kohl was 70 times a minute! He was still loving towards me but I could tell

Took him to the emergency vet Sunday afternoon and agreed to a whole load of scans. Then I got a call 2 hours later to say he had a major fluid build up in his chest cavity and they could either put him to sleep or try draining it (with no guarantees)...I said as long as he wasn't in pain to try so went home again. I knew when they called 20 minutes later it wasn't good news - he had started to fit and should couldn't drain his chest. So back I went to see him for the last time and stroked him and cried into his fur. He was only 10 years old - the absolute best cat in the world and meant everything to me - he followed me around like a puppy and never gave me a moments peace. Slept on my chest or on my legs and used to love touching my bare skin with his paws.

I don't know what to do - I just burst into tears all the time, I wake up in the night and he isn't there, I go downstairs when I get up and only have to feed my other 2 cats (I was especially close to Kohl). I went to the supermarket before and I couldn't even walk down the pet aisle and still cried on my way out thinking I never need to buy fresh chicken for him again. I really don't know how to carry on - I do have my wife (who is very upset too) and my other cats but every waking moment I think of him and how I'll never see him or hear him ever again...I feel its so unfair - he was only 10 and I expected so many more years with him. My wife often joked I thought more of Kohl than her because I dropped everything if he wanted me. Its just whirling round me head all the time that I just want him back
