I don't really care much about form factor, just good performance and something that will last for a while. Recommendations please?

It's so subjective, but my votes would go for:

The Honor 7 - stunning reception, amazing battery life, dual SIM, pretty snappy performance. A little more than £220 at £250, but often discounted on Amazon if you keep an eye on it...

Much cheaper - the Wileyfox Swift.

Good performance for general use, good battery life, dual SIM, great software.

The Wileyfox Storm is £205, but I have no direct experience of it I'm afraid.

The Honor 7 I personally found quite bloated and a bit laggy. Horrible skin too, IMO.

Strange how people differ in their views, isn't it?!

I haven't noticed a scrap of lagginess, and that's coming from a far more powerful S6.

Similarly, whilst the UI takes a bit of getting used to after previous Android devices as it's quite different, compared to Samsung's TouchWiz interface I'd describe it as quite pared-back!

Although no experience of it myself, the OnePlus range (newest been the X and the Two) seem to be very good value - although not got all the features of the S6, Z5 etc, not far off.

Vodafone are selling the LG G4 on PAYG for a ridiculous 225 quid on PAYG. Can be unlocked with ebay code for a quid. Currently oos but worth registering for email updates? A lot of phone for the money.

I reckon the M9 might be in for a big price cut once the M10 is announced too. I don't think it has sold particularly well?

Lots of options at that price.

You could get an incredibly good Chinese phone from a lesser known brand, but I'd recommend getting a mid range phone from a well known manufacturer. OnePlus and Honor 7 sound good.

A friend has the wileyfox storm and really likes it - camera, responsiveness, sdcard etc.

One gotcha.. the compass doesn't work properly. He's had 4 units and it's been bad on all. BUT other storm users don't seem to notice, since most people don't use the standalone compass much. And wileyfox havent seemed interested in persuing.

he's actually decided to keep it as hasn't found anything else as good/good value/with sd card which he needed.

The Honor 7 is superb for its price. Really fast with no lag, no bloatware that can't be simply uninstalled, themes to make it look as you want, a rest 20mp camera and a finger print scanner that is better than anything that Samsung has ever released.

It has superb build quality too, feels very premium, and there battery life is great. Call quality which is of course the most important thing is brilliant.

Failing that, how about the G3 unlocked for £185?

It's still quad HD, still got 3gig of RAM and 32gb of storage. Again, not much really for a phone that was a brand new flagship 2 years ago.

You see that phone is starting to look expensive to me at £170 when you compare it to some of the options above.

Moto x style is now starting to drop. Have to say from my personal experience this is a cracker of a phone. You need to get it on an offer though.

This phone is currently £50....yes fifty quid! at Vodafone. Stuff gives it a cracking review at £79

http://www.stuff.tv/vodafone/smart-prime-6/review

Vodafone PAYG is expensive of course but whack a Lebara SIM in it and get 500 mins and a gig of data for £10 a month, then piss the remaining away £170 on sex, drugs and rock n roll?
