I've just been listening to Mariah Carey and now I'm listening to Marilyn Manson. A lot of people seem surprised that I like such contrasting artists and think it's weird but I think it's crazy when some people seem to limit themselves to only one or two styles of music. I like all kinds of stuff, I don't think that's unusual! I love all sorts of music, from Nirvana to Kylie Minogue to Mozart. Who else has a very varied range in music? What contrasting acts do you like?

My 'fav' artists include Nine Inch Nails, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Little Mix, The Velvet Underground, Waylon Jennings, My Bloody Valentine, Anvil, Julia Holter, Steve Reich, Tina Turner, Joy Division, Angels and Airwaves, Sugababes, Nirvana, Odyssey, Dr Feelgood, Black Uhuru, Sigur Ros, TLC, Einaudi, Beethoven, T.Rex.....in any order, why wouldn't one be eclectic?

The shift between Nine Inch Nails and Little Mix can be jarring at times...

Great list. Oh believe me I know some people who only listen to R n' B and club dance and won't even give anything else a chance whilst one guy likes heavy rock and ONLY heavy rock! He'd never even consider listening to pop music. I just think that's such a limited attitude. There's good and bad music in every genre, after all. My least fave genre is rap but I still don't mind SOME of it. More old school 80's & 90's hip hop, mainly. Lol, I'd love to hear a NIN/Little Mix 'mash-up'!

She's great, eh? Had a chance to see her live by any chance? I'd been meaning to go and see her since I heard her debut but only got the chance for the first time last week. She's excellent, was expecting a fairly laid back melancholy evening but it was actually pretty noisy and man can she sing!

I had a chance but missed her for U2 (I think). My mistake then?

If only, there might be some crossover at the industrial rock/dance end! Sugababes mixed it with Gary Numan!

Sometimes you have to experiment and acquire a taste. I'm experimenting with Jazz at the moment...

Worth a look next time she's in town, for sure.

If we could all just agree to love Oasis, then there wouldn't be a problem.

It's a million miles from their best tune. But your support is appreciated.
And your ignorance is forgiven.

imho a true music lover would appreciate (even if not actually liked) the best created pieces from any style or genre..

vaughan williams, ferry coresten, steeleye span, yardbirds, sex pistols, s club juniors, quotsa, motown, - so classical, trance, folk, 60's, manufactured modern (ish) pop, rock, soul. and everything in between.

This. There isn't such thing as a good or bad genre, there are just good and bad artists and good and bad pieces of music, no matter if you look at it from subjective perspective or try to be "objective". A person with eclectic taste is someone able to find his favorites in almost any genre. That's about it.

I'm totally with you on not wanting to limit yourself to certain types or styles of music, but I do completely get how subjective it can be and how people can like what they like. I always remember listening to Zane Lowe on Radio 1 many years ago and he said "If it's good, I like it". He wasn't talking about anyone specific, just music in general and that became somewhat of a mantra for me

If (and when) I get another 53 songs on my iPhone, I'll have exactly 10,000 songs in my library . I'll list a few of the artists .. (which i've had to whittle down rather massively !)

A$AP Rocky, AC/DC, Ace of Base, Beastie Boys, Blur, Bob Marley, Carly Rae Jepsen, Cher Lloyd, Curtis Mayfield, Cypress Hill, The Dandy Warhols, Dannii Minogue, Deep Purple, Dizzee Rascall, Don Broco, Echosmith, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Ferry Corsten, Five Finger Death Punch, Five Star, Garbage, George Michael, Girls Aloud, Halestorm, Halsey, Heaven 17, Ice Cube, In This Moment, Incubus, James Brown, Jamie Woon, Jess Glynne, Kanye West, Katherine Jenkins, Katy B, Lacuna Coil, Lady Antebellum, Lalah Hathaway, Maceo and the Macks, Madness, Madonna, Manic Street Preachers, Nas, Nat King Cole, New Order, Oasis, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Otis Redding, Papa Roach, Paramore, Paul Weller, Pearl Jam, Placebo, Queen, Quincy Jones, Queens of the Stone Age, Rachel Stevens, Randy Crawford, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rev Theory, Salt 'n Pepa, Sandi Thom, Santana, Silversun Pickups, Slipknot, Suede, Talib Kweli, Taylor Swift, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, The Undertones , Ultramagnetic MC's, Vanessa Williams, Vedera, The Veronicas, Wang Chung, We are the Ocean, The Whispers, Within Temptation, The XX, XZibit, XTC, Young Guns, Young Disciples, Yoyo Honey, Zero 7, The Zutons, ZZ Top

.. and many more !

My music collection is very mixed

I like all the usual pop commericial stuff in the charts.
But a lot of people are surprised I like artists who don't fit into my usual music like Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Dusty springfield, The Supremes etc etc etc.

'Appreciate' is the key operative there. One doesn't have to like a particular piece of music to appreciate that it might be very good. That seems to confuse many posters on here.

The depth of appreciation of Mahler or Copland is probably greater than the appreciation of Tchaikovsky or Karl Jenkins but they all compose great music.
I love the contrast between Miles Davis, Metallica, TLC, The Smiths and The Dixie Chicks.

I think people sometimes use the tag of eclecticism in an attempt to show others how broadminded and appreciative they are, never mind hip or trendy. Whilst I see that only listening to Drum & Bass twelves or big band swing 78's or Death Metal albums might be seen as a rather limited musical spectrum, many people I've encountered with eclectic taste have tended to listen to really well-known music, drawn from the singles charts / mainstream radio or magazine reviews etc. i.e. often not digging too deep or specialising in anything - just scratching the surface. Of course this doesn't always apply but frequently. Hardly surprising - has anyone any concept of just how much music is out there? How inaccessible some of it is if you want to buy it and how prohibitive the prices asked may be?

A common misconception amongst listeners is that if you haven't heard of the artist, then they may not be up to much. I've laughed when standing beside people in HMV browsing through stuff they've never heard of and their friend will ask if there's anything good and they say that it's all "weird sh*t".

I don't really dig this concept of appreciating something without actually liking it. If you appreciate it follows that you WILL enjoy on a personal level - and there are several levels here - the music you don't listen to because they don't move you, the music you ignore because you believe (or know) that it's just not your bag , the stuff you've heard that absolutely appals you. Not forgetting the most important one - the things you buy and spin because you truly do appreciate them.

I can imagine how other people like certain music but it doesn't mean that I will appreciate it or respect their judgement if they do. Nor do I believe that all genres are equal by a long stretch.

I definitely limit myself because there's just too much out there! I have records and CDs by thousands of artists (it's taken a while) and I'm still crazy enough to have large 'wants lists' and to be actively seeking out things I will like in the genres that I'm obsessed with.

When I started collecting as a kid my interests were mostly Punk, New Wave mixed with a bit of Disco, Funk and Reggae. By the time I was 20 I was leaving the Rock related sounds behind to a great extent and concentrating on Reggae, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, early House and Garage (I hate most of the subsequent 'Dance' and 'Rave' UK & Euro scenes) and some African music. My ex, being from an African nation and having grown up with the sounds of a few countries led to me discovering more African artists and also, inevitably, with my listening almost exclusively to black music genres, I would become interested in Latin and Brazilian music and well as Gospel and original 1940's / 50's R&B and Jump Blues.

So I listen to a lot of black music genres but I do still like some Punk and Alternative Rock and other things (Dinosaur Jr., Neil Young and the stuff from my youth like Echo & the Bunnymen, Dead Kennedys, Xmal Deutschland, The Damned, The Cramps, The Slits), yet I rarely buy these styles because I only feel inclined to listen once in the blue moon - I'm far too busy 'living' the sounds that have become my lifeblood. Sometimes I'll listen to maybe 80% music from one genre for weeks or months. I like films but I wouldn't be bothered buying DVD's because I'd spend the cash on music instead. Likewise various other things like old cars which can be a money pit - I think I minimise a lot of expenditure to buy more music, really. It's not very sensible I suppose, as I have too much already. Off the top of my head, a few artists I'm pretty keen on split roughly into categories.

To appreciate something is to recognise its value not whether you actually like it.
I'm sure there are many who don't like Shakespeare or Wagner's Ring Cycle that doesn't stop the plays or the opera being wonderful examples of art.

In response to your last statement about the value of different music genres, why should I have any regard for your opinion on that? Why would your opinion (or any other) matter?

Most creative work can be argued as being of value or vice versa. I'd think that works tend to be cited as wonderful by those who actively have enthusiasm for them rather that those who aren't keen due to having different preferences. People tend to believe what they are told if they believe the source is more authoritative or clued in than they are.

I post my views. I don't mind whether people like, agree or otherwise. For me personal opinions are more relevant when those expressing them seem to have knowledge of what they are talking about. On my point regarding not all genres being equal, I didn't qualify it because I didn't feel it was necessary. I enjoy House music for instance but I couldn't merit it as being on a par with Jazz.

Think I have a reasonably variety of artists I listen to but must admit that I have a strong preference for electronic music. There's not much pop music that interests me nowadays but do still like to listen to stuff I've not heard before. One good source for this is Stuart Maconie's Freak (and Freakier) Zone on BBC Radio 6 Music, he plays the sort of stuff you're very unlikely to hear on any other show.

Here's a list of some of the artists I've liked, past and present:

AIR
Amy Winehouse
Aphex Twin
Apparat
Basement Jaxx
Björk
Blondie
Burial
Daft Punk
David Bowie
Depeche Mode
Dido
Dub Syndicate
Echo & the Bunnymen
Erasure
Front 242
Gorillaz
Hardfloor
Heather Nova
Jean Michel Jarre
Jeff Mills
Josh Wink
Lamb
Leftfield
Maceo Plex
Madness
Martina Topley-Bird
Massive Attack
Moby
Moderat
Modeselektor
Moloko
Muse
New Order
OMD
Orbital
Philip Glass
Plastikman (Richie Hawtin)
Portishead
Propaganda
Queen
Radiohead
Róisín Murphy
Sex Pistols
Sia
Spandau Ballet
Squarepusher
t.A.T.u.
Tears for Fears
The Chemical Brothers
The Human League
The Orb
The Prodigy
The Stranglers
Thom Yorke
Thompson Twins
Tricky
Ultravox
Underworld
Yello

That's a partial list of artists whose albums I own, there are countless other artists who I've liked maybe 1 or 2 tracks from.
