DVD recorder with hard drives - can they play mp3's from the hard drive?
I want to be able to play MP3's on my hifi without using CD's on a DVD player, I suppose what I'm looking for is a full size MP3 player for my hifi.
I was thinking that perhaps a DVD recorder with a hard drive could directly play back MP3's from its HD, the files could be transferred from a data DVD or CD onto it. Any thoughts? Perhaps you know of a dedicated fullsize MP3 player for a hifi. |

There are several hi-fi audio hard disk recorders on the market ... here are a couple of links to two of the better looking ones ... only problem at the moment is that its hard to find one with a disk larger than 80Gig which is fine if you are going to encode everything in MP3 but if you want to use a loss-less encoding format you wont get that many CD's stored.
http://www.sony.co.uk/ShowProduct.do...duct=HAR-LH500 http://www.hermstedt.com/english/hif...hifidelio.html Of the two above the Sony one has the better looks but the hermstedt one has a much more impressive feature list and includes wireless so you can connect it to your home network and push/pull mp3s from your PC. I do believe that cambridge audio are bringing out a similar product with a 160Gig HD but its not out yet and there is very little detail about it on their website. Regards, Andy. |

this may be the item you want.
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=82923 Bear in mind that it has a Hard drive but no DVD recorder but at £150 is somthing of a bargain, especially considering its rarity. |

BrainDrain, to answer your question, I dont think there is a DVD Recorder out there that can play MP3s directly from its HD. I believe they can only play MP3s directly from a DVD disc.
I think the closest that comes close is probably the new Xbox when it comes out, the HD version of the Xbox 360 is supposed to be a full media center, which allows MP3 storage along with DVDs etc. Thats certainly how I am going to store my ripped music. In the mean time, I think the only way of having a set up that you have asked for is to have a portable MP3 player connected to the Aux port on a Hi Fi. Not ideal, but a lot more easily manageable than having to fiddle through several hundred CDs to find what one you want to play! |
