This is how Coca-Cola does it in the US, but as you say, it looks like it would take a fair bit of effort from the retailer.

That looks great.

I suspect we are a very long way away from a similar solution here though.

I emailed Sainsbury's Bank at the weekend to enquire as to when they might support Android Pay:

"Thank you for your recent communication.

We have not yet been given a date as to when our cards will become compatible with Android Pay, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me, including in your email - your name, postal code and last 4 digits of your card number.

Yours Sincerely

Gavin Bryce

Customer Services"

Not that illuminating. At least they were quick in replying ........

Has anyone actually come across a loyalty card that automatically add points onto it just by paying with Android pay similar to the coca cola video.

I added my subway card the other day and it just shows the card number not a barcode so I don't know how they would scan it when I come to use it.

I don't get why you just see the number either. Totally pointless, unless the plan one day is to be able to tap a reader in a shop - which makes sense but hasn't happened yet.

I guess it isn't hard for Google to share details with the retailer to add points automatically if a loyalty card is attached to a card payment, but again it needs a lot of work and expense on the part of the retailer.

Imagine the cost to someone like Tesco to set this all up. And the time.

I was in Costa Coffee this morning and noticed that I had a notification from Android Pay. I checked it and it was notifying me to get the cashier to scan the code on my loyalty card.

So it would seem the barcode ones are scanned normally, the only difference being is that it automatically appears on the screen when the phone detects you are in that retailer. I'm not sure what the case is with the cards that are only showing a number and no barcode. I was in Starbucks yesterday and don't remember anything popping up though. That is one of the cards I have with no barcode.

Third party loyalty card apps pop up too, but of course sometimes GPS may not accurately detect where you are. Sometimes it's too clever for its own good.

I was in Sainsburys Sunday and got a similar message, however the thing it said to show the cashier was the Nectar Card NUMBER and not the scannable bar-code :s

Sainsbury's can't scan barcodes on phone screens, at least not at my Welwyn Garden City store or the local store in Islington.

Staff have been told they can't read them with their laser scanners and don't have the newer scanners used by many retailers that read barcodes on a phone (or watch) easily.

Not sure how Google or Apple can get around that!

I just noticed today that all of my loyalty cards that previously had the long number without the barcode have now got barcodes.

The screen also changes brightness when you select the card. Wonder if that'll help with the scanning.

This seems like a lot of hassle, think I will continue to use my contactless debit/credit cards.

Hassle?

Phone out, press button 9so that screen is on) and hold phone over terminal.

Easy

And useful if you either don't want to be trying to get cards out, or if you don't have them with you.

Phone out, press button, hold phone over terminal is more hassle than card out, hold over terminal.

Admittedly not much more, but it is more hassle.

I have yet to try and get my cards out and failed. So there is no try about it. I want to get my cards out, and low and behold they are out.

I have on the odd occasion left home without my wallet so in that case, I can see how this would be ideal. Then again I have left home without my mobile as we well (and I managed to survive without it - who would have though). You want to use your phone to pay, great - go for it. I prefer to do the easiest thing.

Doesn't it depend if you already have your phone out or not though?
If you do, then using that will still be quicker.

I dont walk around with my phone in my hands. I keep it my pockets. If your phone was out, then yes its less hassle. But then you have the hassle of holding your phone, even when you are not using it.

Now that contactless has instantly expanded, how long will it be before we get 'chip and no pin' for purchases up to £30?

That would also allow smaller banks to ignore contactless.

I've had a letter from my bank stating that some users have had an unneeded extra layer of security added for Android Pay i.e. needing to unlock the phone for amounts up to £30. They have said this has now been removed and from now on I will only need to wake the phone up.

I preferred the extra layer of security and just wish they had either asked me or left it alone.

For every person that feels as you do, there will be someone else who welcomes the change. They cannot ask everyone for their opinion.

At least now it is a standard across card issuers, and is more in line with contactless payment cards.

And of course, if the perceived lack of security is an issue, then simply don't use it.

If you're using a wallet to keep multiple cards in, then removing the card whilst holding the wallet is more hassle (for me) than just using the phone.

The only problem i have is that my spending account does not yet support android pay.

If you have to load Android Pay to select a different card, you could argue that's a hassle too.

Indeed, if you have multiple cards then you might even wish to load the app just to check the right one is set as default, as you can't easily undo a payment everywhere (like a train gateline).

I only have the one contactless card, and I have that at the top. I never open anything.

When shuffling around with shopping, dropping a wallet does zero damage, so the phone will seldom get used. In fact I am likely to remove all cards from Google wallet
