My beloved Sony HD DVD Recorder recently gave up the ghost and, as Sony don't seem to make these machines any more, I reluctantly purchased a Panasonic (DMR-EX97EB).

Try as I might, I can't get it to do high-speed copying. Whenever I get as far as selecting a programme saved to the hard drive to high-speed-copy, it shows the symbol that means high-speed copying won't work for this particular file. (And I've tried converting to different modes - LP, SP ... - to no avail.)

If anyone is able to advise on this (Panasonic don't seem to want to, judging by their lack of response to my emails!), I would be extremely grateful!

Just in case anyone is ever looking for an answer to this, it's turned out to be simple - though why Panasonic don't put it in the manual/explain to their tech support people is a mystery!

To high-speed copy on this machine, use DVD-R discs - not DVD+R!

I haven't tried a high speed copy yet. Is the DVD - R in video mode or VR mode?

If they have shortened the manual, as in many cost-cutting cases these days, that may be the reason. Or it may be buried somewhere such as in a FAQ section like my old 143 page A4 manual for my old Panasonic BD recorder (they don't make manuals like that any more).

The Copying FAQ in the old manual specifies 12 cases when High Speed copying is not possible and in among them is:
It will copy at normal speed in the following case:

+R, +R DL, +RW: Titles Recorded in 16:9 aspect.
I have no idea why only 16:9 recordings are the problem but there are by implication some cases when you can do high speed copy from the HDD to +R/W discs.
