Google may be building their own phone
While we may be used to Google getting a variety of manufactures to build Nexus devices its rumoured that Google may be working on building their own phones too. It may even run its own propriety version of Android. Google is at the mercy of manufactures and networks when it comes to rolling out updates with fragmentation increasing despite Google attempts to deal with it. The project may not see the light till 2017.

Makes sense, it's about time. This way hopefully it will prevent loss of support for devices. There are downsides I guess but what else can you do?

Would have made sense for them to buy a mobile phone manufacturer with extensive R&D and patents to get them up to speed.
Oh wait.

It is an admission that the Android development model is fundamentally broken with newer versions being made available to a smaller and smaller fraction of the user base.
