Have had a cat for 3 weeks now - Cats Protection fed her on Felix pouches and Purina, we've carried on with Felix but bought a box of Go-Cat as that was the closest thing in the shop on the day we were picking up the cat. This costs about 60p a day (25p per pouch, plus a half portion of dry) or £20ish a month.

We're prepared to pay a bit more - would we get better quality food for say £1 a day? We're looking to reduce the amount of carbs and increase the meat content, what should we go for? I've read a lot of advice, but there's hundreds of products being recommended and a lot of them are US-specific. Online ordering is fine.

Also - Catsan Hygiene crystal litter. We bought an enormous Cat-It covered litter tray, which seems to take litres of litter to do justice, and we're not sure how long to leave it before doing a whole litter change (scooping every day, and yes we have changed litter a few times in 3 weeks). It's also quite noisy when she digs it over - is there a different product we should be using?

Apart from that, she's awesome.

After my older cat's recent health scare I was suggested to feed him purely on wet food and that GoCat was really bad for cats with little nutritional value.

I would say best to feed your cat on cooked chicken and rice and supplement with some high quality wet food. Grain free is best from what I've read but can be quite expensive. I've looked myself for when I have no extra bills to pay and Natures Menu looks like a good choice. My local pet shop sells a box of 12 for just under £8

I use Biokat's Micro Classic extra fine litter. I get it from Zooplus about £6 for 14 litres discounted if you buy 2 bags. It's clumping so I only ever need to remove the clumps but as it is extra fine you need to get the scoop from Zooplus with extra small holes. It's the best litter I've come across and I've had cats for years and years that's why I recommend it.
I feed varieties of Purina One Dry food and different brands of wet food but 2 of mine just prefer the dry.

Of course you can spend as much as you like on marvellous healthy food - whether the bloody cat will deign to eat it is another matter....

I would also recommend Zooplus for online ordering. They are based in Germany but delivery is cheap and remarkably fast. They do a wide variety of stuff including offers on trial packs I feed my two random wet food and Purizon dried which they love.

The more money you spend the chances are the food will be better.

My boy can't handle the more expensive/better quality food though it makes him sick. I was told this when I adopted him but thought a small portion as a treat would be OK I was very wrong.

Perhaps I should have listened but the fact he peed in his bed rather than use the litter they suggested on the first night I had him suggested they didn't really have a clue. He was much happier with the new litter I got for the second day.

Thanks for the help - ended up persisting with the online reviews and went for OkoPlus Best Cat Litter (which at least is quieter than the Catsan Hygiene, and will probably last for longer) and Applaw dried food. Will maybe try Bozita wet, seems to have a high meat content and no grain.

We buy Bozita and Applaws from Zooplus. Not that expensive if you buy in bulk:

64 x 370g Chunks in Jelly for £51 delivered. They are cardboard cartons so easy to store.

3 x 2kg Applaws for £25 (it was buy 2 get 1 free)

We have two cats and they just eat Felix or Gourmet Gold. Cat's are carnivores, they aren't meant to east biscuits .

I do leave dry food out during the day and give them cat food on a night time.

Some of them biscuits contain more meat than most food.

You can ask your vet what type of food (wet or dry) they recommend for your cat.

Once you've made your choice, let your cat do a taste test. If your cat likes the food and doesn't have any gastrointestinal upsets (such as diarrhea) afterward, you've chosen well. If you want to know more about them or if you need more recommendations, try checking at http://www.happypetsnow.com/

I do a complete litter change once a week. Cleaning out daily or more if there is poo. I find the crystals quite expensive and the wee stays on top. I us Bio catolet its tiny bits of newspaper. Pets at home are cheapest.
I feed them whiskas dry kitten food. They like that best.
