No. Although you could try spelling her name correctly.

Has anyone said it is racist to not like it, or is this just macho posturing?

Yes i've seen lots of articles relating to the patois dialect that she uses in the song implying that people who don't like it are ignorant but really they're implying racism

Does anyone remember Rhianna? She sang a song called 'Oh Baby.' I quite liked it.

Is it xenophobic to dislike a song by Abba (Swedish), Kraftwerk (German), Edith Piaf (French) or Tatu (Russian)?

Is it antisemitic to dislike a song by Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen or Amy Winehouse?

Is it homophobic to dislike a song by George Michael, Elton John or Sam Smith?

This thread is unquestionably a contender for the most pointless and ridiculous one ever started on this forum.

But there are articles subtely suggesting that it is because of the dialect that she sings in. Also interesting all the people you mentioned are white european

I think you need to read about the definition and history of racism and then think about the thread title again.

Simon and Garfunkel are American and Leonard Cohen is Canadian, so are not technically European, but yes all the artists I mentioned in my post are certainly white. Why is that a problem? Are you now suggesting that because I didn't mention a black Swedish artist like Neneh Cherry, or a black Jewish artist like Lenny Kravitz or a black gay artist like Sylvester, that I'm being racist?

Can you link us to one of these 'lots' of articles please so we can judge the implied racism?

All I know is "Work" is one of the most monotonous, tuneless, repetitive songs I've ever heard. I like most of Rihanna's stuff but this song is truly awful, imo! Where's the melody?!!

Nonsense. Racism isn't the issue. There's an ignorance about it to some extent, for example I've heard comments saying "Was she drunk when she recorded this as it doesn't make sense?". They don't seem to get the concept that the song is in a different dialect and therefore you may not understand all of the lyrics. These were people who do like the song. Nowhere has it been implied that not liking the song = racist. That is a ridiculous leap to make.

If there is a link forthcoming I would wager it'll be a Guardian link.

Terrible terrible song. Have never been impressed with Rihanna at the best of times. She is so manufactured there's literally teams of people making her music. But this song is unbearable. And what's the fuss about Drake? He looks like a nightclub bouncer and literally talks on the song. I don't see much musical merit there.

It's not racist to dislike the song but it might be racist to describe the song as 'gibberish' as you might be considered to be disrespecting the 'patois' dialect. That seems to be the gist of the issue.

well if describing patois (or any other such jabberings) as 'gibberish' makes me racist - then im racist. i dont see why we cannot call gibberish, gibberish from whatever source.

Yes!! I had both Oh Baby & Word Love singles. The album Get on was alright, all very psychedelic in a pop way of course! Wonder whatever happened to her!!

I'm asking myself this of many newer songs I hear lately.

I think Work is one of Rihanna's worst songs and I'm very disappointed in the ANTI era as a whole. For me her last good album was Loud and that was six years ago now!

Ethnic Jewish people and Edith Piaf are/were partly not white.

How popular actually is Work? It's doing moderately well in the charts but are people just buying it because it's Rihanna?

I've seen mixed reactions online; some forums are stanning for it, while others seem to be full of posters disliking it or finding it "meh". None of the people I know in real life are into Rihanna, so it's difficult to tell what the general consensus is.

I'm in the "meh" camp. It doesn't bother me but there's nothing at all about it that would make me want to listen to it.
