Hi, hope you guys might be able to help!

I've been asked to assist in migrating someone over from an old iPhone to a new one, well actually it's a hand me down iPhone 5S, but it's a step up from an iPhone 4S.

However I'm an Android person, and I've never done this before. I don't really understand how iPhones work in terms of iCloud, iTunes, backups and the rest.

The person basically wants to replicate their old iPhone on the new one as much as is possible- so contacts, texts, Whatsapp conversations (might be tricky?), apps, photos, music etc (what have I forgotten?!)

What's the best way of doing this, and is there anything that you should look out for that's fiddly or isn't quite as smooth as it should be? I'll have access to their laptop with iTunes on it if that helps.

Also, as the new phone is in fact second hand, I guess you just do a reset on it first, right? (And I think there may be some stuff on the iPhone that the original owner might want to be keep, just to make things complicated!)

Thank you!

The best thing to do would be for the original owner to back it up to iTunes on their computer so that their backup is saved then get the person with the 4s to do the same on their computer - back it up to iTunes. Then reset factory settings on the iPhone 5s through the settings menu and once it's wiped plug it into the iTunes that the 4s was backed up to and restore from backup and everything should be on it as it is on the 4s hopefully this makes sense 😊

If you don't have a PC with iTunes to use, you can backup to iCloud.
So, backup the 4S to iCloud. Do a full erase/reset on the 5S, and then choose the option to restore from backup. Just login with your AppleID and off you go.

When a friend wanted to do this I suggested iCloud (if wifi available). It took an amazing amount of persuasion to get them to pay the £0.79 a month to extend their iCloud allocation from 5GB to 50GB.

However backup done, and restore was trivial (they needed no help). It "Just happened".

Personally I would of course take both kinds of backups, I'd also sync photos manually perhaps using "google photos", and my contacts are google synced anyway

Just make sure to check the backup works

I was a long time android user and only started using iOS 6 months ago. with a few pointers it's pretty easy.... actually I was helping friends with iOS after having it running for about a day... but then I'm like that!

Simplest way is iTunes.

Plug in 4s. Click backup.

Plug in 5s click restore from backup.

Wait till it finishes. Done.

iCloud can be used to be be aware of your friend has any apps that are no longer available on the App Store they won't transfer over. iCloud doesn't backup apps themselves. Just a list of what ones are installed and downloads them from the App Store during restore, it can't grab an app no longer there. This isn't an issue with iTunes.

There's nothing fiddly of difficult about it. It takes two mouse clicks and some time.

If there is stuff on the phone the original owner wants to keep surely they will be taking care of that before passing it on. You don't pass a second hand phone to its new owner before wiping it clean surely.

To back up WhatsApp messages - that is done IN WhatsApp itself FIRST - make sure backup to iCloud is enabled and it has backed up. (press the do it now button).

If you are backing up the phone to iTunes then using a backup password (don't forget it, it CANNOT be reset) is well worth it. This way you get all the passwords for WiFi and email etc copied across.

I've never used a backup password and all my wifi and email etc settings and passwords have always been ported to the new handset without issue.

This is the easiest way and described in the simplest way also, this is how I always transfer data from one iPhone to another when I get a new one. It's foolproof. It mirrors everything.

If going via iTunes it even says on the screen that passwords (for email, VPN accounts etc) and Health data is not backed up / restored without setting a password.

I assume if you use iCloud then you don't need to set a password. - maybe you used iCloud?
