Continuation of: A thread for the neutrals...

Delaney invited the penalty by sliding/diving in the way he did in the penalty area - it was as dumb and needless as Milner's sending off.
Delaney pulled out from the challenge, his knee barely touched Benteke who then threw himself to the ground screaming. dress it up all you want but that's a dive.

Benteke did what many/most forwards do in that situation in the penalty area - he felt contact and went down.

Some on the Liverpool supporters thread trying to argue there was contact.

Um, may I suggest some new contact lenses, maybe?
Think you need glasses everyone else saw the contact on the replays

Contact equals penalty but for some strange reason when it's a corner kick you are free to do whatever you want, full contact wrestling included.

It's still a dive. doesn't matter what other forwards do, it's still diving.

he was barely touched, just brushed. To react to that by throwing yourself to the ground screaming like you've been shot is diving. it can't be anything else.

if he had been clobbered, fair enough, go down like that, but the contact was miniscule at best.

What a weekend it's proving to be for ridiculous sendings off.

Juan Mata the latest to suffer a rush of blood and pay for it with a second booking.

I loathe this argument. Why put all of the blame on a defender making an honest mistake and not the opposing player whose actions could result in a player getting a yellow or even sent off. Even in the replays, it's far from conclusive that there is any contact.
It's only inconclusive if you're actually blind. The replays show clear contact.

Wow - Mata must've been watching Arsenal and Liverpool and thought going down to ten men was the way to go in getting something here...

Everyone? Half the people here didn't it seems.

Perhaps there was but it is completely inconclusive from any replay angle. If there was any contact it was freckle and hair.

I wouldn't say miniscule. We have hindsight of sitting in front of TVs watching the replay as many times as we want and slowed right down. In a fast paced sport any contact such as what we just seen will put you off balance, you can't really deny that. Did he make it look worse than what it was? Yes as would 90% of other players.

I do get where you are coming from and I am not unsympathetic. Like it or not, however, it has been the case for some while now Benteke did what his employer, his team mates and the club's supporters would expect him to do. And in doing so, he won them the match. I'm afraid ethics and modern football parted company some years ago.

Meanwhile Mata has ruined this match for me by getting himself sent off so early in the game.

Benteke was going down before any challenge. Defender a bit thick even going for it.
I am sure Liverpool fans will accept a similar decision against them with good grace in the future.

Why are you saying inconclusive? There is clear contact on the replay. To suggest otherwise is just strange.

I'm sure every team has in the past, part of the game - love it if for you, hate it if against.

Interesting. The next round game us still scheduled for Sunday according to BBC.
You would think they would mention a proviso.....

Who are these "half the people" I don't think anyone who has watched the replays are still denying there was any contact. Admittedly in real time and the first time I saw a replay, I didn't see the contact until it was pointed out to me.

It's Schrodinger's Match. The game is neither on nor off. Until we open the lid of the box on Tuesday we won't know which cat survives. Until then, Arsenal are scheduled to play a TV match next Saturday.

Sorry, no matter how many times I watch it, this "clear contact" you speak of just isn't there.

Like I say, I'm happy to admit there may be very, very minimal contact that is clearer from another angle, but this "there was clear contact, everybody saw it" is, I'm afraid, an argument for the Liverpool fans only.

If I was of a more cynical mindset , I'd check to see if any bookies have been stung as those 2 yellows looked deliberate ( as well as stupid)

Guess it couldn't of been deliberate as we dont have this kind of thing in our Premier league

So from "Some on the Liverpool supporters thread trying to argue there was contact.

Um, may I suggest some new contact lenses, maybe?"

To:

"I'm happy to admit there may be very, very minimal contact "

So are you also happy to admit that their contact lenses are better than yours now.

Contact there was, no matter how minimal, so those shouting blatant dive in the last thread are simply wrong.
