Interesting to look at how eye gouging is dealt with in Rugby Union, where it tends to occur far more frequently than in football,
The regulations provide a scale of seriousness:
Lower end: up to 12-week ban.
Mid range: up to 18-week ban.
Top end: greater than 24-week ban.
The maximum sanction is a 156-week (3 year) ban.

It's not just hair pulling v elbowing in the mush; it is that Fellaini is a serial offender, seemingly unaware, at Everton and now at United, that elbowing other players in the face is not a normal part of the game.

The FA said the nature of Dembélé’s action was such that the usual three-match violent-conduct suspension “is clearly insufficient”, meaning the midfielder may miss a stretch of games at the beginning of next season.

It might seem overly harsh for Huth, but then again since when is hair pulling part of the game?
It should not be acceptable to that, it is not defending or anything like that, so in a way I can see where they are coming from with these bans.

It's not dangerous nor causes injury so it seems excessively harsh.

In time honoured fashion the FA pulled the judgement from deep up its backside. I have more or less given up expecting anything better from them. There is possibly a handful of people who would have come to the same conclusion and I would hate to be trapped in a lift with any of them.

Does a punishment have to based on the severity of the injury?
Hair pulling is not part of the game, nor should it be, so anything that helps to get it out of the game, the better I say.

Not the severity of the injury, no, but 3 games for something that is no more than petty seems a bit much. There are many minor things that go on in games that arent part of the game but they don't all carry a retrospective ban. Seems like a lack of common sense to me.
Any news on the Simeone incident where he whacked that poor touch-line guy on the arm the other night ?? It was shown and repeated on TV and it's all over Google and uTube ..

It could have been if he pulled some clumps of hair out. He shouldn't have done it. It's about time the antagoniser was punished equally.

I feel you are blowing it out of all proportion. Huth pulled his hair, he's a grown man, he should be able to brush it off for the small annoyance that it is. If it's a 3 game ban then what are the proper dangerous offences worth??
I really dislike Fellini, he is a prolific cheat. Elbowing is very dangerous, he is lucky he has not seriously hurt anyone.

Can remember Ben Thatcher, Suarez and now possibly Demebele getting more, and I think a Chelsea player in the last year or two successfully argued one down to 2 games which migh've been a first, but other than that they're almost always for 3.
Edit: The Chelsea one was Matic against Burnley from last season.

AFAIK the guy is a member of the Atletico team staff, not an official, so it will probably be dealt with as an internal club matter.

Well I would say elbows should cover more than just the standard violent conduct 3 game ban. I said at the time when Suarez bit Ivanovic that given a choice out of that or an elbow to the face I would take the nibble everytime.

Fabregas also had his ban reduced after he kicked the ball at Brunt. Guess they might not have been willing to do so this time though as he didn't get sent off on the pitch.
