Alan Shearer's statue was unveiled at St James's Park today. 260 Premier League goals and 206 for Newcastle United in total.

it was actually jim de ville who i saw call hima dud Quote:
I was going to comment on United's performance, but I can see that there's no point. A certain poster will just lambast anyone who didn't think that Rooney was utter crap (which he wasn't).
Fernandinho was superb, much better than 'man of the match' De Bruyne. The referee had a shocker, and City's 'keeper looks like a dud. City just deserved the win. him and codeblue finally have something in common lol |

De Gea didn't get off to the best of starts with us, yet is no regarded as by far the best keeper in the Premier League, and possibly the joint best in the world with Neuer (with Oblak not too far behind the), so having a poor opening few games is no sign that a player will not be able to hack it over here.

You haven't just got to think he's the best Ninny, you've got to think he's "by far the best", as well as being joint with Neuer in the World

He could be brilliant from here on, but for a 'keeper of his age and experience to look so nervous and susceptible was surprising. I thought the same about Valdes, when he came over here. Years of experience for Barcelona, but looked far from imperious playing his game or two for United. |

Except De Gea was 21 when he came over, meaning that his early struggles didn't matter as much - he took about 18 months to reach the top level but that meant he was fine by 23. Bravo is already 33, if he takes the same amount of time to adapt then he'll be pushing 35 before he's at his best.

'Looks like'. Doesn't mean that 'he is'.

if messi had a bad game in his prem debut would you say he looks like a dud?
If Bravo had just have made the one mistake, I probably wouldn't even have mentioned it. As it is, he made three poor errors that could quite easily have led to goals, thus costing City the game. God knows what that might have done to his confidence. Are you going to offer an opinion? |

Messi's an outfield player, difficult to make the comparison. It would also depend on just how bad he was. Soldado was quality in Spain, couldn't hit a barn door in England.

Are you going to offer an opinion? as for bravo it was a very bad game i agree, he did very well for barca in what i imagine will be similar sweeper keeper role for man city so odds are he does well under guardiola. probably just nerves on sat. |

Valencia and England experiences seem to have put off Neville from coaching again for a while:

He mentions being the most experienced he's ever been, but all of that experience has been the shits so far.

That's more 'lol'-worthy than anything that I said about Bravo. On another thread. Days ago. Just after a derby defeat.
I've already said that he may well be brilliant, from here on. Time will tell. what is funny is that don1 was posting alot when it was code blue in the bravo firing line he has declined to post since i quoted you where you gone donny? |

I really have to wonder how much of Bravo anyone in England had seen before Saturday. people already questioning how many points he'll cost City, like he's some kind of clown keeper really does make me scratch my head. he's just been the first-choice keeper at the best team in football, replacing possibly the best keeper in their history and keeping out on of the most highly-rated young keepers in Europe until he left. you don't do that without being excellent yourself.
once people divest themselves of the idea that the Premier League is somehow a totally different sport to that played by the entire rest of the world, common sense should suggest that this was merely a player having a bad day at the office (which may well lead to a few more, at least initially), as opposed to some sort of figure of fun and a glaring weak link. |

To be fair to Bravo, he clearly called for the cross and was then impeded by a defender quite a few inches taller than him. His stature, like de Gea initially, will mean he'll take a while to adjust to the increase in high balls and crosses over here but he should be OK given his track record and experience.

Do you remember the grief De Gea got when he first joined Utd ? He wasn't the first and certainly won't be the last.

De Gea was a kid when he came here, and had only played about 50 games for Atletico before arriving. the grief he received was ridiculously premature, but I'm guessing mainly because people didn't know a great deal about him. it's very different to a keeper that's played in La Liga for a decade, at 2 World Cups, and however many Copa Americas, as well as captaining his country. his track record is deserving of way more respect than he is now being given, based on one below-par performance. it's madness.

I don't think they do themselves any favours when it comes to English players. Very little to get from hero to zero and vice versa. I think the press are more forgiving when it comes to English players generally. |

Hart was hyped up ridiculously. A very good keeper but not worthy of some of the fawning by the press and pundits.

However I am not sure what relevance this sweeper keeper role has in English football as I can see the likes of Andy Carroll and even Diego Costa causing him to make blunders. 15 million for a 34 year old is way too much |
