Three managers since Fergie suggests that this can't be solely placed at the managers doorstep.

The cracks started to set in just when Sir Alex Fetguson retired and they decided to appoint David Moyes. During that summer they were after so many players but could not get them and i think that was down to the manager. Because if Mourinho was appointed instead then they would have got their targets and at the end of the transfer window they only signed Fellaini. And when Man United were struggling they decided to give Moyes some money to buy a top class player in January. So they signed Juan Mata when really they needed at least three or four players. David Moyes was never backed in the transfer market as the board never had faith in him in the first place. They only appointed him because Sir Alex suggested that he should be his successor

I totally agree - said as much myself. There's something ingrained at the club during a previous dynasty that a collection of differing personalities are finding tricky to get to the bottom of. Each of them have reacted negatively which hasn't helped. There must be strong persistent personality conflicts somewhere surely.

It was put out there by insiders that senior players openly undermined and belittled Moyes. Similarly, players questioned LVG's tactics. Even with some justification, this can't be healthy. Are those personalities/egos still there?

Mourinho saying the team weren't mentally prepared for the match. Surely thats his fault... if he's not coaching these days, and not mentally preparing them, then what is he doing except making excuses, wasting money and slamming officials?

Europa league campaign poor for English sides at the moment .

The commentary is very unrealistic I don't know why them seem shocked at Southampton losing to inter.

Ok it's a poor inter side but they still should be many levels above Southampton

I think at the moment Inter Milan are in turmoil and this is Southamptons best chance of beating them

Even Sunderland would give them a good game

Did i just say that

And if you're nOt fully blaming mourinho for man united's average start to the season, then surely at least those fans who insisted that the team and squad were good enough over the last two seasons or so to challenge for titles. and with one or two signings they could win the league, can now acknowledge they were rating some players too highly... I predicted outside top four before the season and nothing shows any different.

Yes it's a neutrals thread, but where else could I post my view before certain posters type 'neutrals thread'

Carrick,Rooney, Smalling, De Gea, Young and Jones are the last men standing from the Moyes time who also played under Fergie.

I think we've had no real leaders since Vidic and Rio left which is part of the problem. We concede the first goal and their heads seem to go go down.

Throwing silly money around makes you consider what kind of players we're buying for these wages and whether they are mentally fragile.

It looks like Man United are after a Quick fix instead of looking at it long term when they bought Ibrahimovic and Pogba. They felt that by buying these so called World Class players then Man United be would challenging for every major trophy again

Southampton 2 - 1 Inter Milan

Well that is going to put a smile on my face for a very long time. It might not be the Inter of old but they are still a very good team. Southampton have been far the better team not just tonight but in the last match as well.

I am really starting to enjoy this European Football

More fool me for switching off the match when Inter scored thinking that Southampton had little to no chance of coming back.

Great, innit.

We were particularly good in the second half. Just a matter of beating Sparta away, one-nil, that'll do, and we're through. Easy!

Well, okay. Maybe I'd settle for a draw on the 24th. In both games.

I think the cracks were potentially showing before this. Moyes walked in to a league winning squad. What was wrong with those players that they were champions in May and had collapsed in form by the end of the year? Obviously the manager is responsible but surely a squad of league winning standard should have enough quality to do a lot better than they did. To me, United's recruitment in the final few seasons of Ferguson's reign was quite weak compared to his best teams and they were getting across the line thanks to his tactics/aura and the more experienced players in the team. So in spite of being champions, I don't think Fergie left his successor in that great a position. If the club had known a season or two in advance that he planned to retire then they could have prepared better for a transition period in terms of recruitment rather than the desperate scrabbling they've done over the past few seasons.

Sir Alex must be the best Manager of all time to actually get that average team to win the league. He got every player in that squad that extra five percent out of them so they would perform at their best

Well Man U wanted to go out and might get their wish..

Great win for the Saints - deserved after being robbed in Italy.

Not sure why their fans would be so keen to go out of he Europa league. It's their only avenue into next season champions league

I get what you mean, but I disagree. We had four managers and a relegation between our Knights of the realm and a much longer period of underachievement and boardroom banality before the right man came in and got success. Jose was meant to be the right mananger, has been given enormous funds and a free reign. At some point the buck must stop with him overall.

Although, I would give Jose at least one more season and funnily enough, I don't blame him too much for this game. CB injuries, Pogba's injury, Shaw and Miki still coming back from fitness and quite a few players that gave up in the second half.

But surely he must now know that both Ibra and Rooney need benching. Rashford too for a bit. Give Martial a go up top and play Young/Lingard/Depay either side.

Well Ibra was benched but Pogba got injured.

Neither should start next game though.

Sorry, I meant dropping for all three. Rashford looks like he needs a complete rest, Ibra too and though Rooney had a pretty good game (relative to our other players) even before the goal, I still think he slows play down to much.

Great result for the Saints.
