as i have said before zlatan can be a success if he has the right players around him, he needs pacey players around him to run off him so he can focus on holding the ball up and linking play. having zlatan and rooney up front together is not going to get the best out of either player, it has to be one or the other in my opinion not both. if i have to choose between rooney or zlatan to play up front i would choose zlatan, his touch and link up play is far better then rooney and he has a much bigger physical presence. i want to see a zlatan-rashford partnership, i think they could complement each other very well.

Well, yeah, but then that's kinda what you get with a player like Zlatan, and old, experienced strikers in general. He wouldn't work with Rooney, no. I think it's best if you go for one or the other, with Zlatan probably being more prolific right now.

He's an experienced striker, so he won't be the answer to your striking issues, just a good option. He'll be good for a year while Rashford develops, and maybe next year another striker will become available. As you say if you build your team around him you'll get the best out of him, and may well need to do so to get a good return. He's a bit different to when you signed RvP who was able to handle himself. Not that RvP was that old when you signed him anyway.

His name carries weight, too. Teams knowing they'll have to face Zlatan can have a mental effect on them, and the defenders, as well as his physical presence. You can't underestimate the effect that can have on opposition, them knowing they're going to go up against such a renown striker.

Sounds like an either or then? Jose is getting good money to make such a decision, I trust him to make the decision for the good of the team whichever that may be.

I didn't attempt to 'shut down' anything. I simply implied that Mourinho might have a better idea of what's likely to work than any of us, seeing as he's done it several times before.

If you are adamant that they won't work together, that's up to you. If it isn't working, I'd expect Mourinho to change it fairly swiftly. Personally, I'd give it a bit longer than 45 minutes in a friendly, before rolling out the 'told-you-so's'.

As I have said before, I wholeheartedly agree with Banana's view, if not the way he makes his points. Zlatan and Rooney both starting upfront is a no-no in any game that matters.

Surely simple rotation/like for like substitution is the answer? Especially as Zlatan will need time to get up to speed with the pace of the prem.

BTW If I was to get membership of United this season, how likely is it that I would get tickets? When I was last a member about four seasons ago they were constantly emailing me to tell me league cup and minor prem games were available.

I ask because I wanted to buy some charity shield tickets recently until I saw the basic £25 or so tickets on sale for £130. I could just about have squeezed it, but I haven't used the resale sites before (can't get anything from the UK big boys as Wembley have the tickets on lockdown) and the online reviews were mixed....

I can't see Zlatan starting every game anyway and if Rooney's form is anything like that of last season he shouldn't be an automatic starter either.

I'm more interested to see which back 4 Jose uses tbh than our forward line.

If everyone was fit, and barring any personnel changes, I'd wager that Valencia, Smalling, Jones and Shaw would be the first-choice back four. I think that a lot will depend on how quickly Bailly develops.

There still seems to be a lot of rumours about Jose looking for another centre half especially those you suggested we've been linked with in an earlier post.

if you want to see them play more together before deciding if they are suited as a partnership thats your prerogative. my opinion on there suitability is based on having seen both rooney and ibrahimovic play extensively last season and knowing what type of player they both are and there strengths/weaknesses. i don't need to see them play together to realise that they are both slow, i already know that...

Ahh thanks for that, I had not seen those quotes, if he is speaking as freely about Pogba like that, then that does suggest a certain amount of completion of the deal.

This might be random and slightly off topic but I did not realize how much sports agents make until this Pogba saga . His agent stands to make at least 20 million from this deal alone and from what I have read some of the delays over the announcement might be because of him.

Now I see why Jorge Mendes, businessman extraordinaire is worth so much.
