I'll give you Lingard, but I have to say that Martial hasn't had a great game since early this year. Like Rooney he's shown flashes, but hasn't been consistent, but at least last night Rooney didn't hold the play up, was looking to be involved and did his defensive work. The majority of problems that Southampton caused us was due to both wide midfielders being awol from defensive duties. I'd like to see Rashford brought in with Martial being dropped for the next few games at the very least.
I do disagree that Rooney's form won't improve any further, I think Jose hit the nail on the head when he talked about these players playing under LVG's tactics for the last 2 years, it's going to take a little while to break them and turn them into his players. I have seen small changes in Rooney's play over the last 2 weeks or so, that are encouraging signs of a return to the player he once was, as well as adapting to the loss of pace he's experienced. As of right now, Rooney's form isn't the most worrying thing in the team, it's that of the wide midfielders. We are winning, and scoring goals, we've already got a 10th of last seasons goals in the first 2 games of the season. What we are talking about is fine tuning the team and right now the front two have scored 4 of our 5 league goals between them. lvg is not to blame for rooney's decline, he just can't do what he used to be able to do due to his declining physical atttributes. his pace, stamina and work rate are gone, those are the things that masked his technical deficiencies. he has become an extremely safe and cautious passer, almost all his passes are sideways or backwards to the nearest man, he never tries anything ambitious or creative unless its a long ball pinged out to the right wing, and he is even overhitting those these days and watching them sail out for a throw. he brings nothing to the table as a number 10, he can't dribble past anyone, he can't make creative passes, he can't play intricately in tight passes because of his awful touch and short passing. what does he do other then pop up with a goal once in a while? |

As MichPlat said i thought martial improved in the second half, he got into goalscoring positions a couple of times in the second half and was only prevented from scoring by last ditch tackles. he seems to be lacking a bit of confidence and he just needs to play through it, i am sure a goal or two will make a world of difference to him. even when not in his best form he still has the pace and dribbling ability that none of our other players have other then maybe rashford.
I suppose it was too much to hope that City imploded early on. Already, the 10th is looking like a very significant game. |

Now all of that, I agree with.

Happy with the result and the performance was relatively strong as well. There was a period of 15 minutes or so when we could have turned it into a rout.
He has only really been mentioned in passing but having Shaw back makes such a massive difference. He is such a huge outlet and there's no doubt we missed him last season. Great to see that he has picked up right where he left off as well - hard to believe this is the same player who just a year ago suffered a leg break of the sort that has ended careers. Disagree with those who said Mata and Martial had bad games. Have they had better? Sure. But Martial was a threat on the wings and Mata linked up the play nicely - I still think he will make way for Miki but it's good to have those options. For me, Rooney is still a weak link. There were definite occasions last night when the Rooney of old would have made a pass and bombed forward but now he prefers to hang back. I think he sees himself as a Paul Scholes now, but that's something he can never be. The vast majority of his passes were backwards or sideways - he seems to have lost the ability to take players on or to feed through incisive passes. I'm not one of those who is going to roundly criticise him - he certainly did not have a bad game, and I think he still has a role to play in the squad, but he slows down the pace of the game too much for my liking. |

Tyler Blackett is going to Reading too, and supposedly Borthwick-Jackson to Wolves.

bit of a come down for blackett from celtic but i never thought he would be good enough anyway. Will be disappointed if borthwick-jackson goes though. He looked good last year and has a very good cross on him.

Borthwick-Jackson is just a loan, personally I'd be keeping him as backup to Shaw but going out and playing regular football will only help him.

CBJ was always a likely candidate for a loan move this year. As promising as he was, he still has plenty to learn. I don't think he'll make it with us to be honest, but hopefully he can prove me wrong.
For me the interesting loan will be Pereira, he needs to be going to a decent club, to get decent minutes, but where I don't know. I'd prefer him to be in the Premier League if possible, but then I don't think he'll get an awful lot of minutes. |

Hopefully these loan deals can give them all an opportunity to show themselves to our manager, (Adnan included) and you never know they might do enough to be included in the first team in the future.

Just back from the game & I honestly think that was the best atmosphere for a long time in OT.
Good things will happen to that side, Pogba really stood out and Fellani got stuck in. Rooney other than the cross was pretty quiet for me, but a wins a win & all the jazz. Happy days thus far |

Stoke look like they are going to sign Jones, so maybe this could be the start of seeing some players leaving the club?

Just want to back up the poster who mentioned Shaw's resounding comeback. It's kinda gone under the radar but he's already showing just how much we missed him last season.

Yeah, Shaw looks fine to me. No obvious, adverse effects.
If he's physically 100%, then I don't see anything to worry about. |

I forgot that the Europa League group stage draw is on Friday, not that we should at all be happy about being in it, but I am looking forward to see who we get.

Looks like Schweinsteiger is not going to play for another European club, so we might have to get used to him being here until the Chinese window opens up again.
