When I read Jose being lukewarm about the competition I hoped it was just reverse pyschology but that attitude seemed to transmit to the team as well. Did like the triple sub though. That should have worked...

We should not have lost that, Jose needs to realise that being so defensive is not a good strategy, Rashford shouldn't have been alone, we were basically 4-5-
1 in the first half. |

We need another striker in the summer. |

Too many starting 11 changes, too many players without recent match fitness. What a pity we still have to play a load of other matches in this useless pointless competition though. Two successive defeats might start to nibble away at the team's confidence, so we deffo have a must win match on Sunday.

He probably doesn't want Zlatan playing every minute of every game especially considering Rooney hasn't exactly been great so far.
We need another striker in the summer. |

Let's just make that formation look more realistic as he was so isolated....

Hopefully the former, with Jose playing the under 21s in the remaining ones.

The Europa League really is the worst of two worlds: Not being overly arsed about the result while still being annoyed because the players probably should care.

Well done Ninny, we can now use this as an example of why Rooney should play..... Needed his magic tonight, it was missing.
The team tonight should have been good enough to win, regardless of whether Rooney was a part of it or not. |

Would it not be preferable to get into a habit of winning games no matter the competition? |

Yeah but it's God knows how many games until the final. Hard to get motivated for the Thursday Sunday grind.

I don't remember the complaints about having to play too many games in 99, when we were going for the treble, heck we were even doing well in the league cup, why the change now??

I don't think you can compare the treble to the Europa league. Apart from the Champions league place I see it in the same way I do the league cup, it's a trophy but not one to get really excited about.
Wouldn't it have been better to have won tonight to get back on track and be ready for the tough trip to Watford? I just don't see the point of downplaying a competition, if we are in it, we should be looking to do as well as possible in it. |

Who's said anything about not looking to do as well as possible in it?

Surely you should be bothered about the result, as you should want us to do as well as possible in all competitions, and getting beat tonight, does make it just that bit more harder for us. |

Fair enough, but surely it is about building momentum, we are now coming off of the back of two defeats in a row, surely that sounds, and looks bad?

I just don't see the point of downplaying a competition, if we are in it, we should be looking to do as well as possible in it. Hopefully we'll put it right on Sunday. Well I bloody well hope so because it's my birthday and I'll be really hacked off if we drop points. |

The problem is the number of players tonight who haven't had a game until this one, a change of system and maybe some heads were down after the Derby?
Hopefully we'll put it right on Sunday. Well I bloody well hope so because it's my birthday and I'll be really hacked off if we drop points. You can't just turn form on and off, you need wins in a row to get that confidence flowing throughout the team and squad. Hence why this competition should be a major priority for us, just as important as all of the rest that we are in, as winning games, no matter the competition, helps to foster a good team spirit, and things come just that bit easier for the players (or seemingly so anyway). We now go to Watford, with back-to-back defeats, and with the players being a bit down, (or more down then if we had won tonight) that is not good, we will be under pressure to turn this poor form around. The longer we wait for our next win, the harder it will be to get. Thus, it just seems obvious to try and win whichever match is our next match to get that form into a positive mindset. I hope for your sake that we win on your birthday, as I remember the feeling I got when Mata scored at Anfield with that sideways shot on my birthday, it was fantastic!

Batdude, why are you speaking in such a simplistic way?
Mourinho wanted to win the game. The players wanted to win the game. The fans would have preferred to win the game. However, the league game at the weekend is a bigger priority. No matter how much you claim otherwise, there is a hierarchy to the competitions for which the club is entered. You make it sound as if Mourinho basically told the players to bin this off, as no-one would care, and that this was some huge error on his behalf. |

It is of course a very difficult balancing act, but I never think making seven or more changes is good, as it just means a slow start as the players adjust to each other in a match scenario. Coming off back-to-back defeats now, really puts the pressure on us to have to go to Watford and win, otherwise if we don't, that will be three in a row without a win, and suddenly things don't look so good. |
