The only issue with De Gea of course is that he probably won't be here for the long-haul - I still think we will see him at Madrid in the next 2-3 years - but by then we'll have someone else ready to step into the role.

NB: Not suggesting De Gea is like a Roy Keane - by all accounts he isn't that sort of figure, and as you say, we don't have one of those in our squad - but his sheer talent commands confidence. How can you be inspired by your captain given Rooney's insipid performances?”

Captains come in a wide variety of styles of course, some will be like Keane, others like Cantona (who wasn't looked upon as Captain material till he got the job). I'm not saying that Rooney's performance's have been great, far from the standard he's set himself, but for him to get the England job as well perhaps says he does his best work in terms of the captain's role inside the dressing room, and on the training pitch.

I'm not a huge fan of keeper/captains, I'm not sure they can be effective and at least with Rooney, you've got someone who has always been happy to "chat" to officials, so giving him the armband has given him some leeway to do that in a official capacity.

Spot on. Play the most suitable players for an effective team rather than trying to create a system to fit the players.

It's just like watching England at the Euro's all over again.

Jose has kept on too many duffers (harsh I know) including past their best, not good enough and never have been good enough.

Pep had a few of these and booted them out early doors.

If you insist on playing Rooney then do so either as a lone striker or as part of a two upfront. If he can't deliver then drop him.

If he continues to play despite chucking in the odd goal or assist here and there then he's basically become our Gerrard. Even Rogers had the balls to drop him for Liverpool.

Just got in and seen the result, good to see Rashford score again, but three defeats in a row really is very hard to take, and already there is a bit of a gap forming, which is not good to see, even at this early stage.

It's all a bit depressing. Surely not another miserable season?!

Hiring Moyes was the equivalent of putting a vicar in charge of a swingers party.

Shocking performance and Jose needs to sort this, pissing about playing Players in there wrong posistions. Rooney is a striker as is Rashford so play them there and have Ibra just behind. Martial bottled it when challenged and serious doubts have to be raised about him and if he is tough enough for the premier league.

My wife just said I should support a different team because of how stressed and angry I got earlier, lol.

I wonder what the entire Watford team cost?

This is what I wrote on my Facebook page earlier today

What a game and although not a Watford fan it was terrific result for them.
Whilst the media will probably look at how a team thst included the England captain and a 100 million midfielder & a striker on 220.000 pw and some of the most highly paid players in the premier league were so poor credit mus go to Watford who's payers are mainly ones who come tho lower leagues and lesser European clubs who did excellent job yes man utd were awful. But give Watford some credit for a great performance.

There's a neutrals thread for this kind of comment, you might find it more to your taste.

Sorry your birthday was ruined Ninny, I can't think of anything to say in order to lift your spirits!

We were dire. Absolute crap. Aside from De Gea and our goal,I can't gain any positivity from that performance.

I totally agree with other posters, we need a Keane like Captain or...
just throwing this in the pot, what about Ibrahimovic? He seems to be viewed as a mentor for the younger players. Maybe he could rally the team and find some drive/passion?

But playing in a holding midfield role alongside mop-man? That wasn't what we signed him for in my mind.

I know all of us United fans must sound like a broken record these days but Rooney does have a negative effect on the team. He has lost his touch, lost his pace, lost his finish. The formation is constantly being tinkered to fit him into it. Why can't once we just experiment with the idea of Pogba, Miki or Mata in the "hole" instead? Is the 4-4-2 formation, or any variation on it, so dead in the water that we can't entertain the idea of playing Ibra and Rashford upfront together?

For all the transfer business we did this summer (and I do think we signed good players), it remains a mystery why we don't have an actual winger of quality.”

De Gea
Valencia Bailly Blind Shaw
Blind
Pogba Herrera
Mkhitaryan
Zlatan Martial

Could play like that. I put Blind in twice as I dont like Smalling, Schneiderlin, Carrick or Fellaini enough to pick one With Martial and Rashford competing for the striker position, Mata and Mkhitaryan for the number 10 and everyone else really picks themselves as theres no competition.

In reality Valencia, Blind and Herrera really need to be replaced with better quality to.

Mourinho will have to get his cheque book out otherwise he'll end up like Moyes and Van Gaal a scapegoat for a crap squad.

Martial has went off the rails badly, last season he started great, scoring goals looking real quality but as the season went on his standard slipped a bit. I was looking forward to seeing him at the Euros but he looked disiniterested and never came out his shell in the first 2/3 games then I dont think he got picked again as Payet was doing well and Coman made a bigger impact.

This season he still looks like he isnt interested. He seems like he isnt enjoying his football for some reason, letting games pass him bye. Will need to snap out of it soon as Utd will need him to have any hope of qualifying for the CL as Zlatan cant score all the goals and theres no-one else at the moment.

You can't keep throwing money around. Putting players in their right positions for a start starting with the captain. Upfront or bench.

I'd start Carrick on Wednesday, what's the point of a contract if he never plays? Get Blind back in for starters, not seen anything from either centre back that justifies keeping him out.

Give Lingard another start

Maybe start TFM?

This season started off with so much promise, and now it has come to beating Northampton to rectify it, and get our season back on track, after three defeats on the trot.

We have ground to catch up in all of the competitions that we have started in, and that really should not be the case.

I am terribly frustrated by how things are going, it certainly has an air of LvG about things, and that isn't good, if we are not careful, we could once again find ourselves outside of the top four.

Did my celebrating in Manchester's best eatery last night. Feels a bit like the Last Supper considering today's result tbh.

There will be individuals who posters will moan about, as they are the latest scapegoats, however, since the game against Southampton, apart from De Gea, who else can it be said has played consistently well?? There can be arguments against every single player that they are not performing well enough, and that they could/should be dropped.”

Well, they shouldn;t argue with the referee then, should they?

Not surprising that a Mourinho managed team gets players booked for dissent.
