Well tonight's game reinforces that Rashford should play instead of Rooney and Rojo needs getting rid of
Herrera sort of improved, nice goal but still short of what we've seen of him before. |

Bit too early to state that.
We were dire for the majority of the match. |

Please not, City, Liverpool or Chelsea away in the next round (I can't be bothered with all the hype of a José back at the Bridge the latter would bring).

We won the match, and in a straight knock out competition, that is all that really matters.
That matters. We are not back to our winning ways. Lots of work still to be done. |

You say that, but the last two games he's started he's hardly pulled up any tree's himself. Apart from the goal on Sunday he was as bad as everyone else. Last Thursday passed him by. I still think we have to ease him in and out of the side.
Herrera sort of improved, nice goal but still short of what we've seen of him before. Quote:

Good win, in spite of Rooney stinking out the place.
That "touch" at the end that smashed it over the byline sums up where he is right now. He's due his Gary Neville moment - and not a moment too soon. |

We've got a month to sort out our shit against the Bertie's.
And 3 days until Leicester. The Manager needs to be ruthless now. Half of tonights team under performed. |

At least he scored. What did Rooney do? Defend him all you want Tribec, Rooney is not worthy of starting games ATM. That may change but we do need to see how the team can cope without him rather than persevere with him struggling for form. Do you seriously think Rooney still has the legs to have chased down that 70-30 ball the way Rashford did?
You know my opinions on Carrick, but tonight he gets away with it due to not playing much of late, but his touch, his passing let him down tonight, Herrera's passing and positional play was poor, even taking into account that he's "confused" by the role he's being asked to play, however we focus on one player in here and else where who isn't playing well. That frustrates me more than watching this team play, not one player, has played to the highest standards we know they can do, even De Gea, yet apart from the faithful scapegoats everyone gets a free pass, let's call them all out, lets accept how poor they've been and yes I mean everyone. We the fans have helped hound many a player out of Old Trafford, and that I don't like, we have near enough destroyed players careers, and it drives me crackers that it still takes place. |

All I'm saying is that Rooney is far from the only one who's playing badly. Apart from De Gea, and the commentators were after him as well on Sunday, who it can't be said has played badly recently. I get the feeling that Rooney could score 5 goals on Saturday and set up another 4, and people will still be calling him out.

Dropping Rooney won't solve the problems in defence but it might help the drag and clutter we get into past the halfway line. As for hounding players out of OT, exactly who of the players that ever meant anything to United has that happened to? Rooney has got more loyalty from fans than any other consistently under-performing main player I can think of. |

He's not a scapegoat, like Johnny Evans wasn't either. Neither are good enough for United now. |

Too much negativity in here. If we get beat by Leicester on Saturday, fine. But whoever we play, not based on a freeking League Cup game with 9 changes FFS!

So if others play badly this gives Rooney a bye? C'mon I expect his mates to cover his arse but what do you get for defending him? It's straw clutching using the failings of others to detract from his poor form. He gets continously picked regardless of his performances. No other player seems to have this priviledge.

He's not a scapegoat, like Johnny Evans wasn't either. Neither are good enough for United now. Has Rooney been our worse player out of the 18 that have played league games this season? No, certainly not, has he been our best player? Not at all. However from the way people are suggesting in here, he isn't worthy of starting for his local pub side. Were there others in the squad who when given the chance performed better then I'd suggest they start ahead of him, but lets be fair Mata plays 3 or 4 decent games in a row and then does nothing for 10 - 15 games and hasn't peformed this season yet, Miki did well against Hull, got injured and was Ralph Milne like against City, who else? Lingard perhaps? Well he came back from injury and was as good as Miki against City. |

Yes he's the scapegoat, he's the popular target figure. Last night wasn't as bad as Sunday, he is doing the right things on the pitch, that they are not coming off for him is unfortunate. However, people are ignoring the fact that other players are performing equally as badly and poorly by there own standards and yet the focus is solely on Rooney. Yes call him out, but call Mata, Zlatan, Martial etc out when they have been playing badly, but no we are getting calls for Zlatan for captain. He's not done enough to warrant that at United, and the way he's playing he never will, if Rooney has been playing on his reputation for a while then, since the start of the season so has Zlatan. He's hardly taken any games by the scruff of the neck has he, his touch hasn't been great.

Lingard perhaps? Well he came back from injury and was as good as Miki against City. He's not a scapegoat. As for using Miki or Lingard as a comparison. Playing against City after returning from injuries with one obviously not fit to start gives them a bit of a bye tbh. Mata or Rooney is a no brainer imo. How many goals has Zlatan scored despite being unable to take the game by the scruff of the neck? More than Rooney despite being new to the premier league. You cannot make excuses for his performances anymore. He is done and trying to accommodate him is holding us back. Of course dropping him won't provide us with an immediate turnaround but we're going around in circles persisting with him in the hope that he comes into form. He's struggling with the basics. |

There has to be a way to get Ibra and Rashford playing together in the same team from the start, as they could work well together I believe.
