It is becoming obvious Carrick should play in all the big games and we need some more defenders either promoted from below or bought in, and it looks like Smalling and Shaw could be on borrowed time.
(See I can praise him). Against Arsenal, having had a week away from playing he may be in a position to play, if Jose can create a system to play him, he does bring a calming factor to the team, but if he isn't a factor in the game then that calmness is extinguished. Was in Coventry yesterday watch some hockey and spending time with my niece which I don't do enough of. So happily missed the match for that opportunity, but grabbed the MOTD highlights. They made it look like Rooney was picking up some form, and looking a bit like his former self. We know that highlights can be deceiving, so what is the DS opinion?? As for Jose calling out Smalling and Shaw, I think there is something in it. I'm not sure if it's what the press are making it out to be, more that Jose is angry they didn't pull out sooner and allow him to plan around them not playing. We will see, but I think it's common knowledge that players play with all sort of knocks and injuries and the day they don't is the day we'll need huge squads and players will play around 15 games a year if that. |

![]() I give Shaw a free pass for now as he did have a horrendous injury and he's still young enough to want to protect his career (look how long it took Aaron Ramsay to recover from his bad break). Smalling on the other hand does seem to be a bit of a sicknote. In general though, I think most players these days are advised not to play through the pain barrier? |

If we are talking sicknote players, then I am actually quite amazed that Jones played the full match, I was expecting him to come injured at the very latest in the second half!

As outsider I think people will give your team more credit if they played in a positive manner against the better teams.
The arsenal game in two weeks I can see it being typical Jose sitting parking the bus, hitting on the break, playing like an an away team. Can't see you taking the game to them as they have better players in nearly every position and opening up would probably be disasterous |

If Mourinho thinks that playing defensively against Arsenal gives United the best chance of winning, then so be it. |

I wouldn't say that they have better players in nearly every position, I think it is closer than that, and that the upcoming match will be one that is very winnable for us, as we do have a good home record against them.

It would be uncharacteristically naive of Mourinho to allow us to play an open game of football against Arsenal because they've got too much offensive threat for us to be vulnerable to. We have no real choice, but to have a game plan similar to the one we used at Anfield because it would be our best strategy in order to get the win.
Hopefully Rashford has their number once more, as we are without Ibra. |

Whatever the gameplan, I hope that we get the full three points against Arsenal, as we cannot afford to drop more points like we did in that Liverpool match.
Hopefully Rashford has their number once more, as we are without Ibra. |

You did not drop points in that match, you gained a point.

Couldn't believe it Jonesy actually had a good game for change, I'd like to think he can return to the player that I liked once upon time

Depends on ones own perspective I suppose, but for me, it was two points dropped, just like we dropped points against Stoke, Burnley, and Watford.

He just needs to stay fit and we might see his potential fulfilled
Could it be that last season was an aberration for Smalling being injury free? Brown had a couple of fine injury free seasons (though Brown was a significantly better player than Smalling (pre major injuries)). |

If you go out with the intention to get a point, and setup to not lose, and you come away with a point, then you earned a point. For you to drop two points, you'd have to be the better team, or unfortunate to not win. Relying on a Zlatan header to be the difference between one and three points doesn't make it sound like you missed out on two points.
No matter how we set up, if we do not win a match, then how can it be anything other than drooped points? Points that are proving to have been costly even at this early stage of the season, as we are currently a bit behind the teams in the top four places as it is, due to these dropped points. |

The fact of the matter is, we didn't win this match, hence just like against Burnley, Watford, Stoke, and Chelsea, we dropped points.

So you go away to City or Arsenal, get a good draw yet for you it's dropped points ? You expect United to win every single game they play ? Wow. And you wonder why other posters dig you out...... |

Jeez Bats, how arrogant do you want to come across.

I like to see my team doing as well as possible (as of course others do with their respective teams I can very well imagine), so when we don't do well, I get despondent, which is I suppose only natural really. Being sixth in the league at the present time, is I would say, with a bit of a gap to the teams above us, is not what I like to see, and I am disappointed to see it, even at such an early stage. If this is a controversial opinion, or a way to look at things, then I guess that I will have to take it on the chin, but for me, we should be doing slightly better in the league, then where we currently find ourselves, that is not being arrogant, or showing arrogance, it is just wanting the best for your club. |
