I think we'll start letting players go fairly soon, maybe even in this break period with the cup games coming up. By the sounds of it Everton are basically there on our valuation of Schneiderlin and any offer in the region of a fun-sized Mars bar would be decent for Depay.

It's early January, so I'd guess that this might be 'the start of players leaving us'.
Not temporarily, though. Mourinho said last week that Johnstone would be the only loan. I'd hold out for a standard Mars bar, for Depay. We don't want to be seen as a soft touch. |

I wonder if Schweinsteiger will wait until the end of the season to leave us, as getting rid of him and Schneiderlin at the same time, would leave us a bit short in that area.
Depay looks to be almost gone. Hopefully no surprise exits are on the cards, Fellaini to China perhaps?! ![]() I don't think we will sign anyone this window, that Benfica feller seems to not be on out radar, after all of the headlines. |

Short in what area? In the 'people who don't play' area?
![]() ![]() ![]() As for Depay, I think both you and Jim are being a tad mean. I think he's worth the double sized bar at least! |

According to the Metro and Daily Star, we bidded for AC Milan forward M'Baye Niang and it was rejected.
Not sure what to make of it really, barely know anything about the player... but I'm personally happy with the current attacking options we have in the team. |

Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request at Southampton. He was linked with us pretty heavily during the summer, dunno if we're interested now.

To be fair, it'll leave you short in the defensive/sitting midfielder department - and would promote a certain hirsute Belgian up the pecking order. Carrick hasn't got the legs to be ever-present. I suspect Jose is looking to recruit a Kante-style player as he likes that style of player at the base of midfield and often enplyed two.
Schneiderlin has the grand total of 11 minutes of playing time in the league this season. You can argue we're already short in the defensive midfielder area but his departure makes sod all difference frankly. |

Can't see it but it wouldn't be a total shock if it did happen. A new CB was very much on the agenda for this window until Jones and Rojo's recent upturn in fitness and form.

Kostas Manolas the Roma CB is the name being linked to us this afternoon.
£32.5 million bid allegedly. http://www.express.co.uk/sport/footb...Roma-32-5m-Bid |

I can definitely see a new centre-half coming in, this window or next. Like you, I'm not convinced that Fonte would be the answer, though. Wouldn't be shocked to see Lindelof or the like come in the summer. |

Fonte is 33, not exactly one for the future, we have about five or six centre-backs already at the club, now if one or two were to leave, then I could understand bringing in someone else, but with only maybe Smalling out of favour, where would he possibly fit in?
Bailly, Rojo, Jones, and Mensah are all more than capable of doing well for us for the reminder of the season, then we will see what happens in the summer. |

Why bring in someone else, when he's been bossing the defence all season? He's played about as much as Schneiderlin. Bailly's gone for a month, Jones is always prone to an injury and Rojo's been extremely fortunate to not pick up suspensions, so if he doesn't fancy Smalling, that leaves us pretty short for the time being. |

It's just possible that Mourinho thinks that there are options out there who would do a better job than some of the players that we already have.

Bringing someone else in, would you would think imply that they were coming here for game time, and not to not play games, so quite who would not play out of our current options in that area to accommodate any new player, well your guess is as good as mine (maybe yours might be more knowledgeable I don't know). José obviously quite likes Mensah as he has played him this season in Europe, so the potential for him to get more game time is there I believe if of course he does all of the usual things to continue to impress the manager). |

Yes there are of course two sides to every debate or position, and yes if all of those negative aspects do happen, then another centre back might be needed, but as if this moment, all of our centre backs are fit (although of course Bailly is away on international duty) and playing well, that could change at any moment, but currently, I do think we have enough in that department to get us through the rest of the season.
That leaves Rojo and Jones. You could include Blind in an emergency, but it seems that Mourinho doesn't see him as a centre-back. If you think that's enough, fair dos. Mourinho may feel differently. Quote:

One injury, drop in form or suspension, and hey presto, they're in the team. Quote:

If you can't see why the manager may decide that he fancies bringing in another centre-half, then I can't explain much further. Goes back to the 'bigger picture' thing. |

Smalling isn't 'playing well'. He's barely playing. Bailly, as I've already pointed out, is away for a month.
That leaves Rojo and Jones. You could include Blind in an emergency, but it seems that Mourinho doesn't see him as a centre-back. If you think that's enough, fair dos. Mourinho may feel differently. It's quite feasible that somebody could be brought in now, and not be guaranteed to play in every game. That's how squads tend to work. People need resting, occasionally. One injury, drop in form or suspension, and hey presto, they're in the team. Mourinho may well 'like him', but that doesn't mean that he'll necessarily be happy to depend on him for a run of games. The fact that he's hardly played would bear that out. If you can't see why the manager may decide that he fancies bringing in another centre-half, then I can't explain much further. Goes back to the 'bigger picture' thing. Rojo, Jones, and Smalling are the three other "main" centre back options, with Blind and Mensah in dire emergencies, so that is five players for (at the moment, and famous last words and all) four current competitions, now thankfully we don't have to travel that far for the next leg of the Europa League, so tiredness shouldn't really become a factor in that particular match (yes injuries can happen at any time), but if we do progress to the next round, then of course we await to see how much travel could impact on us, as there are still some potentially long trips that we could get. If someone were to come in to the club, they would you would think be coming here on the premise that they would be getting a fair chance at playing games, that does tend to be the main reason why people join us (of course money is always a factor as well), and whilst of course form, injuries and suspensions could happen to anyone at any time, a player joint us, would be expecting to play almost from the get go, so quite who would currently be dropped to accommodate Fonte, or whomever were to be our new centre back, I don't know, and wouldn't like to guess. Yes squad rotation is something that is there for José, but centre back is one of those positions where you need to develop a healthy partnership, could Fonte or whomever do this as quickly as we could need them to do at this very crucial stage of the season, as Jones and Rojo have done, I would hope so, but the question is out there. I am looking at the bigger picture, which is you don't bring players in to not play them. Of course you want competition for places, and to keep people on their ties, no complacency and all that, but the question is how big a squad of players do we need, we already have players that are not playing, that are good players, international ones at that, would additional players help or hinder us? Of course I hope it would help us, but it is currently hard to see where an extra centre back would fit in now, come the summer, when we can have a clearer picture of where we stand, then of course it would be easier to see if an extra player (maybe more) might be needed in that particular area. |

There's no point in going over and over this.
You could be right. Perhaps Mourinho won't feel the need to bring anyone in. However, I can see why he might, whereas you seem baffled by the prospect. Plenty of players have been bought, when it looked like there wasn't really any need. Just as plenty of players have been bought who looked like they were needed, but ended up on the sidelines. It's not an exact science, but managers will try to cover as many eventualities as they can, whilst always striving to improve the squad. |
