He has a genuinely incredible goalscoring record wherever he has played. He's an incredible player.

But he turns 35 this year.

Whilst I dont have an ambition for thinking long term with a managerial appointment for reasons Ive discussed at length Im not sure I see the merit in doing similar with players.

If he comes in and does well we are getting a year out of him and then have the problem of replacing him. Alternatively he comes in and at 35 he declines rapidly and we have to replace him.

Great as he is I have a huge sense of "why bother?". That said if he signed it would be hugely entertaining.
Don't like short term signings as a rule but this one makes sense. Assuming he does well you'd expect him to get a lot of goals but I reckon he'd have a bigger impact on the rest of the squad. We could do with restoring some of that swagger that we used to have, he'd be perfect for that.

I don't want Ibrahimovic. Even for the short-term boost he may bring. We should be signing players at or near their peak, not those who may decline at any moment. If we are going to sign another player over thirty, I rather have Ronnie back. But I'd pick Lukaku or Kane first. Kane is and has been for a whie my top pick, but Spurs look nailed on for CL football next season so that will be a hard grab. After initial reservations, I now agree with all the Lukaku fans on here that the lad is a true talent and still has a way to go. He would be a great buy for us and a more likely get.

Well yeah but Kane/Lukaku have never retired an entire nation. Ibrahimovic has.

Pretty much how I'd be looking at it.

With almost any other player, it would make absolutely no sense, and I'd be dead against it.

But Ibrahimovic? No-one can match that kind of balls-out arrogance, and I'd love to see it at United, even if it's just for a year.

It's a lazy comparison, but he has the air of Cantona. The likes of Rashford and Martial could only learn from it.

We have absolutely no chance of signing either Kane or Lukaku. Kane is likely going to be with Tottenham for some time if not the majority of his career, itll take something huge for a move to happen (and a lot bigger than the Bale deal). Everton wont sell Lukaku, they have no reason to and with their new investment the likes of Barkley, Lukaku and Stones will be there for years. Also for argument sake neither Lukaku or Kane have proven themselves at the highest levels yet, they have the potential but are not in Zlatan's league, even now with him being 35 soon.

On the otherhand Zlatan is available and has hinted he wants to play in the Premier League. I rather have him in our team rather than playing for City or Chelsea. It makes sense to get Zlatan, he is the sort of player United have been missing for many years now. The experience he can bring and show the likes of Martial and Rashford have to be ruthless in front goal is priceless.

The only argument might be that he will stop the development of one or two players, however, he does not play every match so theres playing time for all. Plus if anything it would naturally bring confidence to the team even if for a season he can be used to build up the next generation. 35 or 25, Zlatan is still one of the top 5 deadliest strikers playing football today.

As for Ronaldo, the difference is apart from his wage Zlatan is a free transfer and so less of a risk of it does not work out. The marketing of Zlatan would pay a large part of his wage anyways too.

i don't think lukaku is going to be at everton for years, he may even leave this summer. he wants to play at a big club, he stated that in his own words, everton is just a stepping stone for him. kane is a different story because spurs are competing at the top of the league and look like they are going places, also he will have some loyalty to spurs because he came through the academy there. the fact that zlatan is free doesn't really come into consideration for me because united are not short of transfer funds, i am only looking at what he can bring to the table on the pitch and i think he will struggle to adapt to the prem at his age.

Zlatan would be a no from me. I don't want United to be a retirement home for former players however good they may have been. No other club with proper forward thinking ambitions does that. It was bad enough taking Larson and blanc and now probably schweinsteiger in that capacity. We should be signing players on the up, not about to fall off a cliff.

You and some of the other guys above make a good case for Zlatan but I feel obliged to counter:

Lukaku and Kane have both proven themselves in the premier league, so that's a huge box ticked.

It would be very difficult to get either, but not impossible.

I hadn't noticed Martial and Rashford not being ruthless in front of goal TBH. Zlatan could teach them something about perfectly-timed runs though, I'll give you that.

I wasn't being serious about Ronnie versus Zlatan, simply trying to point out that he's younger and could probably do a job for us longer. But talking of players younger than Ibra, what happens to Rooney if Zlatan is signed? God forbid the descision is made to play the two of them together!

Zlatan has been and still is a top player. So we have to ask, why are PSG not extending his contract? And if we are serious about being a top club again, why sign a player to be our figurehead that Real, Barca, Bayern and certainly not City under Pep would touch with a bargepole? If Conte goes to Chelsea I bet he won't sign him either. You guys can see it as a no-brainer if you want but it never makes sense to sign a player over thirty and hang your hopes on him - even if he is a free or cut-price (I present to the jury the United career of Bastian Schweinsteiger). It's a risk. If you guys think it's a risk worth taking, far enough. I think it makes more sense to look elsewhere and younger. Or at least get both Zlatan and a big-name younger signing.

Edit: What mickthehat and Banana said.

Agree with those who would be against one season with Zlatan, prob £10m in wages, whether United can afford it or not, it is a hefty chunk. Class player, but would probably need to build the team around him and then change the style again the follwoing year when he goes or is past it.

Does Mourinho have any history with him or have they crossed paths before?

I would see the Ztalan signing along the same lines as when we signed Owen. A shrewd piece of business for a striker past their prime, but still capable of delivering on the pitch, and more importantly, a talismanic figure in the dressing room.

Owen is a good good comparison, but I think a more relevant one would be RvP, as he was our main striker for a period of time, and this is what Zlatan would have to be whilst he would be here.

He is also similar to RvP in the sense that he is a player that you buy as the the finishing piece for a team looking to go that extra years to win sonething, rather than where we are, which is, trying to piece together a team to compete with the best teams.
So that is a bit of a mis-fit in that respect.

It would certainly be interesting times if he were to come here though.

Agreed. I'm fairly sure his agent was making some noises about him joining a bigger club than Everton not too long ago.

Personally I think the club should have some pride about them with certain players.

Utd were not good enough for Ibra during his prime, and now he wants to come at 35 for a nice payday?

No thanks. Don't particularly care about what impact he would make because he would be gone in the blink of an eye.

As an Everton fan....Lukaku & Stones will be gone this summer, with that I am pretty sure.

But I would agree with you that Man Utd have no chance of signing Lukaku, his first love is Chelsea or CL football....not writing you off just yet, but it's not looking like you will be able to offer him CL football.

Not having CL football won't make any difference if we have a new manager and a big pile of cash. I'm confident of that.

I think it will for Lukaku, if Chelsea come in or another team that can offer him CL football, that's providing you haven't qualified for the tournament of course.

Is that true about his first love being Chelsea? Hadn't heard anything like that before.

No harm for Everton in selling Stones for £30-£40m.

He's not getting CL football from them next season either.

His career has been on a sharp upward curve all along he seems pretty smart or has pretty smart advisors.

Yeah, I would be surprised if he went back to Chelsea even if they were in the champions league

It's been reported a few times.

Hey we are only a single point behind fourth place, so it isn't totally out of the question just yet!

I would be shocked if both Stones and Lukaku leave in the same summer window, as your board and management would look pretty weak if they did, and not very ambitious.

One perhaps I could see them just about being able to talk themselves out of, but both of them, no, that would put them under far too much pressure.

Me to, both him and them seem to have moved on from each other, and it would be a bit of a step back I think he went back back there.

If he does leave Everton, it will only be for a club who were able to offer him a place where he could still improve further, and showcase his talents on a bigger stage (Champions League).
