That isn't what you said though, is it?

You said that it would be 'hard' for the board to sack Van Gaal, if we qualified for the Champions League. I'm saying that it wouldn't be 'hard' at all. There wouldn't be huge outcry from the fans, presumably.

It might make them less inclined to do it, but that's a different thing entirely.
It would be hard for the board, as he would present them with a reasonable case in which he could say that he deserves to stay, (not that I think he should), so it will be up to them to decide if qualifying for the Champions League outweighs all of the other negative aspects that have come with his managerial spell.

If the board want rid, they'll get rid. It won't matter what 'reasonable case' Van Gaal puts forward.

Well let's see what happens, we will find out in a month or so I suppose.

It will be a huge call either way to keep him or not to, and then who to employ next.

Who says they even have to listen to him? They can fire him at will, provided they meet any compensation clauses.

They'll already have decided what they are going to do, with whom and when. It would be crazy to wait until they find out what if any trophies we win and where we finish in the league.

If they have decided to sack LVG they will be rooting for him and supporting him, hoping that he does as well as humanly possible by the end of the season - 3rd. or 4th. place with or without an FA Cup win would be a huge achievement after December's debacle, and would allow him to leave with dignity "by mutual agreement".

If they have decided to keep him, finishing 5th and trophyless won't now change that IMO but they will be planning his succession already, albeit a year later. So I hope we can get a CL place and win the Cup as it won't at this late stage make any difference to the LVG succession, IMO.

Why?

Its clear that they aren't doing anything until the summer and frankly there is little point doing anything now. Announcing he is leaving in the summer (if he is) serves no real useful purpose right now either.

As for the previous comments, he isnt going to get an opportunity to plead his case to keep his job. If he's off he's off and that's it.

There's no need for them to announce anything, right now.

EDIT: As above.

Only just read this.

Spot on.

If he leaves it will be with a bit of dignity. If he is going Im pretty sure he knows it but Woodward has been giving him every opportunity to be fair. He is a big name with a big record who is in his last year in football and the whole "mutual consent" thing seems most likely now. In all honest at this stage im happy enough with that. Much as he hasn't worked and Ive wanted to tear my hair out with the guy half the time I have no problem with a dignified exit.

All that changes if he ends up staying though!!!

If he is going then that's fair enough, but if they have decided he's staying, and he has said he is happy to stay, then wouldn't 8t be better to say so now to end the chatter?

I have a nagging feeling that the board will stubbornly stick to 'the plan'.

Some of Ferguson's recent comments lend themselves to that way of thinking.

Even if we finish 5th/6th, they may see it as another 'rebuilding' phase, and won't pull the trigger.

Hope that I'm wrong, mind.

They probably feel that it's prudent to keep quiet, just in case.

If we were to lose all of our remaining games, for example, his position would then be untenable, and they'd look foolish for publically assuring him of another year.

If they have decided one way or the other, then why did they leave it so long to sack Moyes?

That is the only other comparable situation we have to go on, as Moyes' final season (or near full season) can be compared to this one in terms of performances and style of play not being good enough etc etc.

It did seem that they were waiting to see if we did qualify or not for the Champions League before sacking him, once we did not, then he was gone, so it is justified to look at that and extrapolate an explanation as to why LvG is possibly still here as our manager.
We are still in with a shout of making the Champions League, so the board have not pulled the trigger so to speak.
If for example it all comes down to a last day shoot-out so to speak, as to who finishes fourth (which is not entirely unbelievable an option at this stage), and we miss out, then it will be a very easy decision for them to make.
If however, we do reach fourth place, then it does put them in a small bit of a bind, as that is what they presumably ask of our managers at the start of each and every season.

This will be a huge decision to make, to keep him or not to keep him, and then to appoint someone new (if it is not to be Giggs).

Personally speaking, I think it would be best for us, if he did move on, and we brought in a new manager (not José).

This. Except it's not a nagging feeling with me, it's a horrible one.

That is good to read, I wonder when we will read something similar about either Jones or Young, as I cannot remember when they were last in contention for a first team game.

We have seen how announcing a new manager has affected City's season, perhaps they don't want something similar to happen to ours?

Best just get this season out of the way, then make the announcement over if LvG is staying or not, and if not, who the new man will be then, rather than it disrupting our season, when we are still in contention for a Champions League spot, and perhaps the FA Cup as well.

If LvG does go, our end of season Player of the Year award night dinners won't be the same without his rambling speeches!

You cant just look at Moyes and assume that's whats going to happen for every manager or that they all have the same set of requirements to remain in the job.

Young was in the last squad wasn't he?.

Also think I heard Jones is ahead of Shaw in his rehab. He'll probably break a nail and be out for another three months though.

That is the most recent manager that they have sacked, and it was under not too dis-similar circumstances to what we are talking about with LvG (poor performances, poor records in terms of defeats, not doing well in Europe etc), so until there is a different set of circumstances, it is the most reliable and recent one that we have to go on (Big Ron was far, far, far, far too long ago to be at all relevant to this discussion).

One of the main requirements you would think would be made apparent to any manager of ours, is that each and every season, we should be finishing in the top four as a bare minimum, so in that sense the requirements for all managers are quite clear.

If he is not careful Jones could be turning into the next Hargreaves, or Saha, in terms of his injury record.

I do hope to see him back, most likely next season I would imagine now, if Young is that close to a return then that is good, as I quite like him.

You don't know that for sure. The board may look at the injury list as a mitigating circumstance, or the high turnover of players.

If they're adamant that they want to continue with this 'plan' of Giggs picking up the reins, in a year's time, then they may decide to keep Van Gaal on, regardless of our final league position.

Why do you keep repeating this?

Does anyone here know for sure what the board will do, or what they will use as a reason to keep him or not?
All we have to go on is speculation, and to look at past decisions, (and the most recent one is Moyes) to try and come to a rational decision over what they might do this summer.

As for Jones, do I keep saying that, if I do, fair enough, I won't mention that comparison again, and just hope that he gets over his injuries sooner rather than later.

The Moyes situation was considerably different, so has no real bearing on what they might do with Van Gaal.

It wasn't just the results, or style of football.

The majority of the fans had turned on him, he was a laughing stock in the press, he'd inherited a title-winning side (and alienated quite a few of them, allegedly), and seemingly couldn't attract/decide upon the players required to overhaul the squad. He also suffered for being the man who followed Ferguson. Expectations were much higher.

Van Gaal has done a lot of the work that Moyes was hired to do. The board may well take that into consideration.
