Whilst what other teams do is important its been the case all season that Man Utds biggest problem is Man Utd.

So whilst our objectives for the match tomorrow has not changed, (if we want to finish in the top four, then a win is imperative), a draw in the West Ham and Arsenal match, does give us a bit of breathing room from West Ham, even more so, if we manage to win our match.

On a different topic, fantastic performance by out under 18's today, beating their Newcastle counterparts 7-1, with five of the goals coming in the second half.

The situations are. I wasn't comparing the players. The point is you bring them in they do well and then they dont progress. Man Utd's next manager can't afford to take the likes of Januzaj and put him in the team to see what happens only to have him not progress as expected. Similarly Macheda got a chance and didn't take it. Thats fine if you have other players to bring in but you wouldn't want to be relying on it.

If Mourinho came in and said "Im not buying a striker Im putting my faith in Rashford" and we're sitting mid table in October with Rashford firing blanks people won't be saying "Im glad he's giving the young players a chance" , he will be getting rained for not buying a striker and his job is on the line.

Thats why you can't take the chance.
Why not think positively?

Why not think, what if Rashford is doing well and is on double digits for goals next season, and we are amongst the front runners?
There are two ways to look at a situation, I prefer to try as much as possible to think along the positive lines.

There is a chance that just like with Falcao (albeit not an expensive transfer per say, his wages made him an expensive deal) an expensive transfer might not do as well as Rashford has done so far this season.
So I would far rather give someone like Rashford an opportunity to continue in his role, rather than buying say a Higuain or another expensive striker that there might be a settling in period.
At least we know that Rashford has the talent and abilities to do well if given the chance, yes "second season syndrome" is a worry, but so is "first season syndrome", with whomever we might bring in.

This game apart, have there been signs of improvement since McGuiness was let go?.

Well it has been a bit up and down in terms of results, as you would kind of expert at that age range, but today's match was great to watch, Carrick was watching by the side of the pitch for the second half.

Gomes was very good today he looks a very talented player, he has had some hype around him, so I don't want to go too overboard, as there is still a very long way to go with him just yet.

I'm surprised there's no news regarding Carrick's contract, maybe it's down to the uncertainty that LVG will still have a job at the end of the season?

Is Gomes the one born in Salford with Portugese heritage?

I would prefer him to stay, as even as a squad player, and playing less games, he still has lots of valuable experience that he can pass along to likes of Mensah and the other younger players looking to establish themselves.

Yeah that is the feller, good display today, then again it was a good display from the majority of the players.

You were concerned about if next season Rashford was stuck on zero goals and we were in tenth place, people would have their knives out for the manager, that is a very negative way to look at things, it could be the other way round, it just depends on how you want to try and look at things.

I wasnt concerned in the slightest I was using him as an example of the potential issues when relying on youngsters, you completely missed the point. I'm not saying Rashford will fail.

Thanks for the update on the u18s. Fantastic result. Newcastle in trouble at all levels.

He's not being negative or saying Rashford will fail. He's saying IF the next manager opts to stick with Rashford rather than spending money he has available on a more expensive option, and Rashford doesn't work out and you're sitting in mid-table, he won't be praised for sticking with youth, he'll be criticised for failing, especially when he had the funds to buy a striker.

Yeah, that does seem to be the case, Boonen with a hat-trick on his father's birthday, not a bad present really!

The potential issues are only there if they do not do well, and thinking negatively about them in that way, is just what we should not be doing.
We should be thinking the other way, "what if they do well", thinking negatively is exactly how you derail a young player, and not give them a chance in the first place.

I understand entirely that scenario, but that is a negative way of looking at things, what if for example to turn it around, we are fighting it out at the top of the league, with Rashford doing well, and we didn't sign a striker?
Why is that not a possibility worth thinking about?

I would far rather think about things happening like that, then go the negative route.

Iwobi and that young City striker look very handy indeed, if all three get more game time next season, they could come on leaps and bounds.

It is not, as I say I perfectly understand that point, and if we were sitting tenth with our players playing badly, and nothing to really point towards as anything good, then it would be hard for a manager to play the younger players in that situation.
However, that might not be the case, we could be fighting it out at the top of the league, at this stage no-one knows for sure, do I would far rather think of the latter and believe that will be the more likely option.
Give me Rashford up front scoring goals for us than a Higuain or an Ibrahimovic, as to me I would get far more pleasure out of that.

You ARE missing the point. You've just demonstrated that with this post. The point being made wasn't that if we spend money and are sitting tenth then it will be hard to play youngsters, it was that if we don't spend money and are playing the youngsters and sitting tenth then the manager Is going to be criticised for not spending in the first place.

As you seem to do often on here you are replying to everything for the sake of it, not because you actually have anything to say but because in your mind , posts = good debates had by all

You might want Rashford to do better than Ibrahimovic or Higuain would but for one that's putting a lot of expectation on the young, still unproven player, and there won't be many managers in the world, even Ferguson, who'd choose Rashford over either those two if given the choice. Zlatan and Higuain aren't proven in the Premier League but they're proven at the top level and carry less of a risk. If the Summer transfer window closes and you don't sign any strikers, hoping Rashford, Martial and an aging Rooney stay fit and do the business then you're letting yourself in for trouble and a repeat of this season. The manager will also come in for criticism if he doesn't sign a striker when he is able to.

That's not using young players, that's throwing them in the deep end and hoping they all click at the same time.

Spot on. Would be nice to come in here one day and find it free of his kind of schoolboy nonsense.

Rashford should be part of the squad next year, 3rd or 4th choice but there's a long way to go before I'd be comfortable with anything more than that next year, even if he finishes this season on a flourish.

Yeah. I'd argue it's not fair on him to put so much pressure on him at such a young age. Expecting him to lead the line at such a huge club that expects to do well in every competition it enters could have a detrimental effect on him.
