Not trifle. TRUFFLE.

I really love the flavour of truffle. I've had delicious white truffle oil from Borough Market, with bread. And in Holland they do amazing truffle flavour cheese. I have a large piece in the fridge right now which my pal brought me back from her holiday last night. Divine!

Do you like the flavour of truffle? If so, which items have you had and recommend? I've only had the oil and the cheese but I'd love to try some more things.

I haven't tried them 'neat' as they're very expensive. I've seen on TV shavings of truffle on pasta. I wonder if that's nice?

Only had it a few times but enjoyed it. Went to a very posh restaurant and had risotto with shaved truffle on it and it was divine.

I like it. I've had shavings in a restaurant on a dish of hake with clams, samphire and gutweed butter. It was very nice. I've had truffle oil as well which I liked.

When it comes to expensive food items though I prefer foie gras which I absolutely love.

How awful. Foie Gras should be banned in my opinion.

There's a difference between slaughtering animals for meat and causing them unnecessary suffering just so people like you can have a "luxury" food item.

When something tastes that good I'm not particularly thinking about the animal itself. That foie gras would be there in a restaurant regardless of whether I eat it or not so I'm not going to deprive myself. I did the taster menu at Alyn Williams restaurant at the end of last year and the foie gras duds were one of the nicest courses I've ever eaten (although the entire meal was incredible).

I tried it, in oil, in cheese, as shavings on food, it's okay, but I am not crazy about it.

I've just been reading about truffle oil and surprisingly, it contains no extract of truffle! I've had crap tasting and and delicious stuff, and the latter really does taste of truffle. Truffle cheese deffo has truffle in it though.

Foie gras has been mentioned...I had some foie gras pâté in a French restaurant once. It was divine.

Indeed, its an expensive version of 'vanilla essence'. It is believed a lot of people now think truffles taste like truffle oil, which depending on what oil you get could be horribly wrong.

Got a jar of truffle salt from M&S for Christmas, which is nice on chips.

Tried foie gras once and it was a bit too rich for me.

I had some absolutely wonderful truffle-infused Brie from Neale's Yard one Christmas. Gave me the worst gout attack I've ever had.

I agree. People joking about it are dicks. The cruelty involved is horrific. But hey, don't think about the animals if you're enjoying yourselves.

Don't think I've ever had truffle so I don't know what it tastes like.......is it a sort of mushroom ?

I've had those chocolates that are called Truffles but I don't suppose there's any truffle in them........

Sort of like, as truffle is also a fungus.
The flavour though is very strong and the closest thing I can liken it to is like a garlicky taste but still different to garlic.

I've never had it either and always wondered what it tastes like.

The cruelty in egg production is far worse but most of the country eats them.

That's pretty rich coming from someone who's name calling because people like foie gras.

Thanks for the advice though, I wouldn't be thinking about the animals anyway though, the occasions I've had it have been in really nice restaurants so I'm just focussing on enjoying a lovely meal.

I just can't help it.

On reflection though, the next time I'm out and there's foie gras on the menu, I'll be sure to tell them that I'm no longer eating foie gras and am depriving myself because a complete stranger on the internet called me a dick.

We had truffle mash in a steak restaurant in Las Vegas. It was possibly one of the nicest things we've ever eaten, in fact, it was on a par with the foie gras we enjoyed at Le Gavroche.
