It is a bit routine in the acting world too. People are hired and dropped at every level from extras to stars. I would imagine actors are always given the option of a dignified departure and its up to them whether or not they take it.

Let's imagine Capaldi has been told his services won't be required. If he were to come out and say that, the tabloids would be full of stories about him being AXED! Which would place the show in severe crisis with a hiatus and an AXED star. It would then appear that the BBC is losing faith in the show.

Alternatively, if Peter were to say he doesn't know whether he's wanted (his position from last year), that would also suggest a show in crisis as he comes back from a hiatus to be put on trial. (1986 all over again.)

His most recent statement really is in the best interests of all concerned, regardless of how true it is.

You see it quite often in soaps but it's usually quite obvious when someone has been axed because they start issuing statements such as "the producers and me agreed by mutual consent" or "we both decided that the characters story was complete".

I think this will be a first when an actor has come out said that he's had discussions to continue in the role, only to be covering up that he's been axed. It will certainly be a first if they manage to cover up this deception for 18+ months. But who nose..?

I still find it hard to imagine that Capaldi is lying but I wouldn't put it past certain higher ups to be lying to him or if series 10 turns out to be a flop and circumstances change then the offers are hastily withdrawn.

Soap actors can be axed very quickly as soon as their contacts are up. EastEnders is notorious for having hastily-written exits in which a deadwood character says "I've got a new job in Newcastle. Bye, everyone." in the space of a single episode.

With Capaldi, were talking about an actor who is contracted for at least another year. It's in nobody's interests for him to spend that time carrying the stigma of an axed actor.

Moffat has made no secret of the fact that he would quite like to leave show and has plans to do so. He's given numerous interviews where he talks about the difficulties in finding a replacement and that he is sticking with Doctor Who, more out of loyalty than anything else because he wouldn't want to abandon the show without a showrunner. He talked about how he thought that the Christmas special just gone may have been his last.

Moffat clearly isn't going to announce how much he hates working on the show or that he can't wait to leave because that would be unprofessional but he may well have a grumble about it to friends. So Gatiss's comment on twitter really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

And as lots of other forum members have already posted here in this thread, there are at least three examples we know of where the actor playing the Doctor has been offered the chance to claim it was their choice to leave when it wasn't. So I'm a bit mystified why there is such a strong feeling that this couldn't possibly be the situation with Peter Capaldi. I'm not saying it definitely is the case, but it certainly could be.

It certainly could be the case, no matter how unlikely it seems to me and to be honest when the subject first came up I really couldn't care much either way but my strength of feelings on the matter grew when a certain forum member started bandying out insults such as mindless fanboi's (and even calling me a liar at one point because I made a harmless mistake). Taking a needlessly aggressive approach and superior attitude to those who don't agree with their view point, which up to that point had been a harmless discussion and debate. If people go around waving red flags at bulls then they really shouldn't be surprised when they charge at them.

But it is a useful reminder as to why I usually limit my exposure to these forums these days as the opportunities for reasoned debate and discussion seem minimal in comparison to those who just enjoy throwing around childish insults and belittling others who dare to disagree with them.

Are you seriously telling me that you can't see the difference between the evasive way he answered the question about the filming of series 10 (and really it's not his place to be saying when the series will be broadcast anyway) and the very firm and definite way he now says that he's had discussions about series 11?

I think that's rather unfair. It's not his place as an employee, and he is obviously, to come out with stuff that hasn't been announced. Indeed, it would be unprofessional. All Capaldi reacted to was the question that the next series would be halved episode wise...and he confirmed he had been contracted for a full run for Series 10.

Moff and Peter were totally truthful about S10, in that they would FILM a full series in 2016, which is entirely correct.

It indeed would be unprofessional to comment on information about the show that has not been released, like saying they'd offered you another series when nothing had yet been finalised on whether you were actually doing it, unless of course you had the bbc's backing to do so as it was all part of some bigger PR plan to control perception and not actually the truth.

Of course announcing something as a fact, that you've rehearsed and knew you were going to say, is going to come across as more confident than having a question put to you in an interview that your having to avoid or come up with a paltry answer to because you know your not allowed to say the full truth of it.

You are saying he is maybe(?) telling a bold face lie to deceive fans and press and "spin" the situation to make him and BBC look better and for him to do a cover up of his own "Non-renewal". Thats a pretty heavy judgement on character.

No, that's your interpretation. what he said is that it would be unprofessional to comment on information that hasn't been released, and I agree with him. I'd be more inclined to believe that he was saying what his employers suggested, than a scenario in which he was being unprofessional towards them.

I've put it to you time and time again over the course of this thread that I just can't understand why the bbc, and those involved in production would go against their usual action of not releasing any information about the show, or what people may or may not have been offered until deals have been done and things are confirmed.

Every time I bring this up, you seem to ignore it, as though you don't have an answer.

I've kept asking it because it is the main thing that has made me suspicious more than any judgement on Capaldi or his character.

Even if it turns out that he does stay on for series 11, and it indeed was his decision all along, I will still wonder why they strangely, and completely unusually allowed him to talk about it now.

well, if CC/BBC came out tommorrow and said they asked PC to stay in series 11, I guess they'd be part of the supposed "cover up" too.
