Does anyone know why Matt Jones who wrote Impossible planet/The Satan pit, in my mind one of the best stories the new Dr Who has ever had! never written any more stories for Who. Was he ever asked to do any more?. I'd love to have seen Capaldi's Doctor in a story as good as that one.

Am glad Im not the only one who thinks hes the best writer, hes so great urgh if he was showrunner the cliffhangers would be intense! One of the best stories of '06. I wish he came back same with Robert Shearman. Although I think hes a bit more scary action oriented...

This is what Matt Jones has been doing ...

I think I'm right in saying that he was RTD's script editor on QAF - which may explain how he got a DW commission ...

If I'm remembering The Writer's Tale correctly, his two parter was heavily rewritten by RTD. There was definitely a dream sequence with Jackie and Mickey / a Rose being possessed plot RTD was quick to ditch.

I think someone on DS also said that the original draft had Davros in the Pit. Not surprised RTD ditched that too.

I actually regard The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit as RTD's finest work on the show ...

I'm aware that RTD had a suspension that people wouldn't be interested in a Doctor Who story that was a throwback to original DW. Unfortunately he was right and in terms of ratings it was the lowest rated story of the season. Shame as in my opinion it was the best, not perfect but kind of how New Who should have gone.

So, in the opening titles, IMO, it should have said 'The Impossible Planet by Russell T Davies, based on an original idea by Matt Jones.'

RTD did say that he probably should have taken a co-writing credit for this one.

It's telling that every time an Ood shows up the credits say 'created by RTD' rather than Matt Jones.

I'd be very interested to know how much - other than the 'there's a buggardly baddie in a bloody big hole' concept - was Jones.

I'd venture not much at all, well i suppose the ideas was his, but RTD fixed every last bit of it to make it a working story.

Moff has take some co-writing credits in recent years. I have this image of Moff and RTD sitting down over a bottle or 3 of wine, and moaning about not getting any credit for those massive re-writes where they did most of the work, and RTD persuading Moff to put his name on the credits as well!

I can understand ditching the Davros cameo, but is there an explanation in the book as to why he rewrote these two ideas? I don't see what's wrong with them.

Rose had already been possessed by Cassandra earlier in the series so RTD may not have wanted to repeat that scenario.

That's a shame, I think it would have been far more interesting to see Rose possessed in a more serious and exciting story like The Impossible Planet rather than the whole thing with New Earth, which to me felt like an over-the-top joke fest and wasted the whole possession concept as an opportunity for some cringey one-liners.

On the other hand, companions being possessed or mind-controlled is very much a Doctor Who cliche. New Earth got away with it by doing it slightly differently, but I can understand any concern over repetition.

I remember the dream sequence was ditched because RTD dislikes them and thinks they're only used by poor writers.
