Enjoying Sally's local politics storyline

Getting ready to duck for cover here!

Make no mistake, I have been one of the show's most vocal critics over the past year, but have been thoroughly entertained by Sally's hapless attempts to represent the Street as an independent politician. For me, it's a very character-driven storyline as we all know how much of a social climber Sally is, and how she'll be hopelessly under the illusion that she has the gravitas to make it in the hurly burly world of local politics. Over the years, we've seen her go from brassy good time girl to responsible working mum to the endlessly idealistic but equally hopelessly ill-informed busybody we see today. For the first time in a while, I found myself laughing when we had the meeting at the cafe and Sally- as predicted- ended up slagging Norris off. I know it's not to everyone's taste, but it's a bit of fun at least.

Maybe they'll both be elected, since I imagine there are three councillors for each ward. We'll know how many other candidates there are once nominations have opened - and closed.

Shea fabulous. Very funny storyline.

It's fantastic, isn't it? It's such a welcome relief from affairs and issues and yet they've barely scratched the surface of what they could give Sally or Norris if they get elected.

I wish we could go back to a time when there was always a councillor in the street. It adds an extra dimension to the show, and with a cast this size there's no excuse not to. Please writers, don't let this just be a one-off comedy storyline.

Can hardly bear to watch Corrie nowadays and story lines like this are top of the pile of reasons for this. It's not remotely funny it's just full of cringe and very AWFUL.

I'm hating it. Sally as Margaret Thatcher is more than I can stomach. And it involves all my most disliked characters (plus Tim, whom I like a lot). Please let it be over soon.

I see your point BW, in that it's very much within Sally's character & something I actually suggested myself in a post shortly after I joined the forum!!
Sadly I'm finding the reality almost unbearable now it's actually happening!! My problem being I loathe Sally's character with a passion & certainly don't find her funny!!
However there's no law that says you have to like a character for them to be entertaining so I'll try & stick with it & for once congratulate Mr Blackburn for fitting a s/l to a character, rather than tryng to change the character to fit a s/l!!

Have to say I'm loving it too and throwing Norris into the mix and giving him something decent to do is also great. I like how they're making Tim caught in the crossfire and mixing in the feud with Jenny too. It definitely feels like one of the few genuine character-driven storylines of recent times and seems to be getting lots of characters entangled in it which is fantastic. Add me to the list who hopes it isn't just a one-off comedy story.

Same here. I used to love Sally in the old days but now .........

I don't find her amusing at all, just nasty and stupid. Tim is her only redeeming feature.

The whole debate scene, with everyone crammed into the cafe, was ridiculous and then she got personal with Jenny. No local political candidate would ever do that. I just didn't find it funny at all.

Why were they all crowded in there when there is a so-called Community Centre available.

I find it silly that Sally and Norris seem to be the only people in the whole of Weatherfield running for council. its also silly how both only seem to canvass for their campaigns on the street, in reality you would need the support of more than just one street in a town to win a campaign, I know the whole storyline is just for a bit of comic relief and harmless fun but little holes like this still bother me

Agreed, and all soaps so much better when the writers remember that they should be about the characters, not silly attention-seeking weekly plots and 'issues'.

I can watch characters like Sally, Tim and Norris all day long so I'm certainly happy with this.

On the other hand they could dispense with the various Lukes, Stephs, Gavins and random slave girls and I wouldn't even notice, let alone miss them.

The nominations must have closed long ago - the episode with the voting takes place on Wednesday of next week the 16th.

So it is supposed to be a by-election. Despite the fact that they wouldn't - in fact couldn't - have one so close to the main council elections. And whoever gets elected will serve for about 6 weeks?

Her and Tim would give the Underwoods a run for their money.

I completely agree. It's beyond panto!
Sally has become a horrid witch so when we are supposed to have sympathy with her... I don't. I used to like Sally and Tim together but now I just feel sorry for him. He could do so much better.

I thought they said the previous incumbent was sacked/forced to resign due to some indiscretion? Surely they can't disenfranchise the electorate by not holding a by-election and hope next time their guy is indiscreet at a more convenient time?

That speech in the pub was embarrassing. What makes it worse is that Sean and Beth always have to be in the background pulling faces. Can someone please run this pair over with a truck?

Thank goodness someone agrees with my point of view. Corrie has had some dreadul storylines in past few years but this one tops the lot. It was actually embarrasing, beyond belief. To an extent I feel sorry for the actress having to do this scene with such a pathetic script. Should the actress perhaps grow a pair and tell them to shove the script or is she quite happy to pick up her no doubt very large salary

Absolutley awful storyline. and her scenes in the pub yesterday were cringe.

But the actress likes doing shite like this. She has said so.

I think the story line is pretty good. I did find it weird though that Sally a 50 something year old woman had no clue what political party she should support. Surely she'd know the stances each party takes at her age. Sally also reminds me of Hillary Clinton, her opinions change suit her needs and she in it all for the title and could careless about actually making a difference.

Her speech in the pub was the same crap you hear from actual politicians

Hope they allow the audience to vote online on who will be the winner in the show
