Oh and doesn't the council go into recess for 4 weeks before the election. So wouldn't it only be two weeks of actually being a candidate. So why do a by election and waste money

That's hardly exclusive to Hilary Clinton or Sally for that matter.

Sally can't say what political party she stands for because ITV would probably get into trouble for bias. She sounds to me like she is nearer UKIP than anything else which was why it was ridiculous having Ken being her campaign manager considering he has always been a Guardian reading Liberal. God I can't believe I'm talking about this tripe almost seriously

She's supposed to be an independent as is Norris. If either of them do get elected, they will have absolutely zero influence on what goes on even if they side with whichever party is in power. So all the posturing and speech making are a wast of time whether or not either is elected and will kept in the box marked "Dealt with" and forgotten.

LOL very true but out of all the presidential candidates Hillary does it more than most, especially a lot more than my fave Bernie Sanders.

I also don't understand why ITV would be in trouble for stating Sally's political beliefs. I know here in the US their are many tv characters that have had their political beliefs mentioned. What would ITV do if they had a show like Scandal where the characters political affiliation is tied to the character, would they just make up some fake political party?

Oh he sounds really interesting. Mind he looks rather old to be a junior United States Senator

They wouldn't be in trouble it's just that they wouldn't want to appear biased in any way and it could look like that if they had a national treasure of a soap character aligned with an actual political party.

In more serious dramas particularly about factual matters then real political parties are mentioned but it wouldn't happen in prime time soaps.

LOL well Bernie has been around for awhile and he is only 4 years older than Hillary.

As for the soaps, I don't see how stating a character's political affiliation could be looked at as being biased as long as they aren't making it seem as if one party is better than the other.

Right so Bernie is 82 then

I just don't think the soaps want the trouble of the British tabloids exploiting any supposed bias. It's easier all round not to mention an actual party though it's pretty obvious which way the political characters are leaning. Ken was clearly a socialist so no doubt a Labour supporter and Sally is more of a Tory so more than likely a Conservative supporter.

Once an election has been called, they also have to be very careful in the run up to it that no political bias is shown either in the way a story is shown or in any of the characters.

Even in a TV or radio programme which features the public speaking such as phone ins, the person has to state that they are not a candidate in the election and are not allowed to make any political comment unless the programme is a specific polical programme.

It's one of the better storylines at the moment, but that isn't saying much. I wanted Corrie to revisit the whole politics thing because it's been a while since we saw Audrey involved in councillor affairs, and posted that somewhere here months ago. I do like Norris and Sally, but their squabbling has become tedious and insipid. The scenes in the cafe (why wasn't it held at the community centre?) were just laughable.

Having said that, it was good to see Jenny put Sally down a peg. She has fitted in perfectly.

Sadly, we had no Sally this week as she was shoved aside in favour of tedious and Godawful plots like Tyrone collecting scrap metal (really?), Maria's sham marriage and Izzy's cannabis use. Fortunately, we're going to see more of Councillor Metcalfe in the coming week as her path crosses with the devious Pat Phelan.

Hopefully Phelan will totally ruin her credibility as a councillor (not that she had much) and brings her down to earth with a really hard bump the snotty self-righteous bint.

Sorry but give me Maria, Tyrone or even Izzy over Sally any day of the week, whatever s/l they are involved in!!
At least none of those three make me want to punch a hole in my TV screen!!

Even though these plots are nothing to shout about, last weeks offerings with trying to promote Tim as this big great businessman just came across really forced and ridiculous. The only thing that makes up for it is that Tim tells her how it is and takes her down a peg or two.

Sally will invariably be brought crashing down to earth again before too longer. What's the betting that Jenny Bradley will plot to bring down her career in politics before it's even got off the ground? Sally Dynevor is a terrific actress and I would much rather her on our screens than the ridiculously unfunny scenes of Maria dressing up as a lion, or Izzy's whimpering baby face.

Fair enough, horses for courses!!
I loathe the character of Sally personally & don't find her funny or entertaining in the slightest, whereas I love Maria & did find last night's scenes, if not hilariously funny, at least warm & entertaining!!
Izzy , I will agree is pretty dire, though I'm sure there are others who would disagree with us on that too!!

Talking of which, this storyline would have been more topical if Sally's victory had been announced on Friday May 6th. Some Councils in real life do not count votes until the Friday anyway.

I recognise that a lot of viewers think that Sally has been turned from a deluded social climber into a silly caricature, but I think that brilliantly character-driven scene between her and Yasmeen last Frida perfectly captured the essence of the character and why she has always fought to transcend a rough start in life that she feels deeply ashamed of. More humane and contemplative moments of self-awareness amongst the comedy please, Kate Oates.

It was a good scene I agree, though it didn't excuse all the garbage in the episodes leading uo to it!!
I've said this on several threads now but for me it's time for a rest from Hyacinth Bucket charicature Sally & a return to tough no nonsense Sally!! She needs a council campaign that sets her at odds with the mayor & her 'superiors' rather than fawning over them, maybe uncover some corruption or something & gain respect for herself, let her win for once, then her charicature snobbiness would have some basis at least!
Annie Walker was a brilliant snob because as annoying as she was people respected her!! With Sally she is a repetitive nobody, respected by nobody but herself!!

Absolutely boogie, it was a great scene. What was important for me was that it wasn't gratuitous, the references to Hilda and her curlers weren't just for the sake of it, but they were all about adding depth and xxx to Sally's character. I can't remember the last time that Corrie had a scene like that. Not only did it use Sally's history on the show to support her present situation, but it showed some much-needed self-awareness from Sally ('I know everyone laughs at me, snobby Sally') So, if Sally is aware that people laugh at her, it's time for her to do something about it and earn some genuine respect.

Anyway, I'm with you in hoping that this is a sign of things to come.

I agree with you ndd - as usual I doesn't excuse any of the rubbish but let's hope it's a genuine sign of positive things to come. You know how much of a critic I am, so for me to try and keep a positive outlook where Corrie is concerned is quite hard work

They need to drop the cheap Keeping Up Appearances gags and start taking her down a more serious path. They can still maintain the snobbery but they must stop with this awkward and annoying caricature. Your comparison to Annie Walker is a good one - Mrs Walker was never a caricature or outright comedy character, everything she did was a deadly serious story that just happened to be funny. I like the idea of Sally uncovering corruption or vested interests at the council. In fact, I like the idea of her getting more involved in the council in general. I think that she should leave the factory and start focussing fully on her council work. Maybe she could get involved in a regeneration scheme that sees her become involved in Phelan's dodgy dealings.

Not many references to Sal's political career these days.

I was just thinking that. It seems to have outlived its purpose, whatever that was and been consigned to oblivion. Or maybe to cold storage in case it needs pulling out again in another unlikely scenario.

IT might be referenced tonight with the reveal of the flats scam. I hope they don't forget her early involvement with Phelan lobbying her for the development in the first place.

It may have been silenced as a result of a 6-letter word beginning with B.
