Have you ever caught your cat meowing to another cat?

The experts also say that a cat will never meow to another cat after becoming an adult.

In another thread, it seems that the experts might be wrong about cats not liking their underneath being touched, so I wondered if they were wrong about this too!

Apparently, meowing is reserved for communicating with their mothers as a kitten. After becoming an adult cat. they will meow to us as parent figures, but never to another cat!

Have you ever caught your cat meowing (as opposed to making another sound like a chirp) to another cat?

Yes, but not usually in a friendly way

It's also a much deeper noise than the sweet little mews they make to us, or is actual high pitched screaming.

I have 2 of my 4 cats that constantly terrorise each other including making a lot of noise, not the usual cat fight wailing, one of them makes a high pitched noise like he's singing. Never heard it before with any of my cats. I assume it's an aggressive noise.

More like stress.

I've never heard a cat use the sort of mews used to humans to another cat. My current cat will yowl, swear and hiss at cats she doesn't like. There is one cat she tolerates if he stays in the garden but their communication is non-verbal.

I feel quite sad if it is stress related, but I just don't know how to make these 2 cats tolerate each other

You may benefit from watching some of Jackson Galaxy's "My cat from hell".
I suspect its probably to do with territory - give them more space to claim as their own - especially areas off the ground.

That's an excellent programme, not least because before and after the ad breaks they show a ferocious cat doing a wonderful big hiss!!

I love to hear cats hiss, but in real life it's not a good sign as the cat is obviously stressed, but do I love going onto YouTube to indulge myself 😹😻😸😼😺

Our 20 year old cat died this year, but even to the last she could be very vocal. I've heard her making every noise imaginable to other cats on our front lawn (endless cat turf wars all of which she won). She was mainly screaming at them, hissing etc but I have heard her miaow as well and when we have had two cats in the past, one would maiow at the other.

It was quite funny last weekend. I was in the garden doing some very light early Spring work, and Lucy was out with me. Suddenly a young black (I think Tom) cat appeared at the top of the fence and jumped down quite confidently into my garden. Then he caught sight of Lucy and immediately jumped back the way he had come.

AS others have said, only in a 'you're in my bedroom' sort of way but not too bad.

However, one of our cats regularly meows at the dog. Not in the way she will at the other cat, but a sort of 'Im watching you'. Not nasty or angry, not yowly, just so he is aware she is telling him.

ETA - in fact she just did it. she jumped off the sofa and he lifted his head in the normal 'I'd like to chase you' manner he does and she stopped, looked at him and did a little meow.

I've come to the conclusion that cats meows are baby talk. They meow to each other when they're kittens, but use the more adult clicks and chattering sounds when they grow up.

So when they meow at us, they're talking to us like we do to babies.

From what I can gather, meowing is similar to baby talk, so when they meow at us, s/he is adopting kitten mode and treating us as the mother cat!
