Are calls going through 3G okay or is the whole 3G system totally down?
2G internet @ 150kbps maximum (30kbps on an old GPRS mast) is a total joke and you can't do anything with it. Especially if all of the phones that normally use 3G, are having to be routed through the slow 2G! |

3G data is now back online.
Apparently a switching centre in West Bromwich lost both its primary and secondary power sources causing a complete outage. The first set of replacement equipment has been installed , with the second being installed later tonight. Was roughly a 10 hour outage all in... |

Still down here :/
Previously I had to use LTE only to get data working - S4 has no VoLTE so no calls. |

It's back on here now. I wonder why it's always EE that have these issues...

My internet signal went off in Hull at about 5am this morning and came back on at 3pm for about 10mins then went again and just come back on 4.20pm,
I rang at 8am when there service center opened and she said 24 hours it should be back on and she credited £10 off next months bill as a sorry which was a bonus

Back where I am! Northamptonshire finally has 3G data once more, so I can use my WCDMA mode again and have calls and data as required.

Ever thought about automatic mode so you can CSFB from 4G to 2G? Why would you force to 4G only with no voice?

It was said in the first Book of Bullshit: "Use ye not 2G, its data speeds are low and it can not TuneIn, lest ye suffer for all eternity with its speeds" |

2G works fine for data as a backup. Refusing to use it as a matter of principle as a backup is slightly insane, if there's nothing else there then might as well use it.

It's because the network is so amazing that sometimes it surprises even itself and blows up! hahahaha

But many sites (especially in areas that haven't had the 4G upgrades) are still GPRS, which is likely to give about 30 kilobits per second - which will fail spectacularly if I tried Tunein on it for more than about 15-30 seconds. if the S4 behaved how I expect a phone to behave - by using 2G as a backup for if nothing better is available - then I'd be fine with it. Heck, it might even have helped by keeping the connection alive in areas where there is nothing else (until the phone found, and locked back onto, 3G or 4G). Trust me, I've found many a place where 3G is very weak or nonexistent, and a tiny bit of EDGE or GPRS would have kept the Tunein stream going (until I could get 3G again). But how the S4 behaves, by jumping to 2G so early, is kinda bizarre... I've found sometimes that it won't go back to 3G unless there is at least 28% strength/3 bars/8 ASU available, and that's far too late... If there's a 3G signal available (assuming no data outages like today), even at -111dBm, I'd still like to use it as it may well provide 0.5Mbps - 1Mbps, or even more. Same with 4G, even into the -120s dBm, it has still provided enough data for my needs. If 2G was used by the S4 as a backup, then it'd be fine - but using it when it doesn't need to just hinders what I require... Sorry about the ramble again!

If I needed voice, I suppose I could have done the default mode, and hoped that it stuck with LTE for data for as long as possible. However, it's not the best mode for data. Though I do have an interesting question... Since voice was working fine on 3G when I tested it (despite the data outage and getting no data flow), if I'd have had it on default, and I needed to take a call, would it have CSFB'ed to 3G (with no data) or 2G (with slow data)? Thankfully, I didn't need to take any calls, or use Tunein Radio... because calls would have likely required CSFB to 3G or 2G, yet Tunein would have required 4G. And this is why, when I upgrade the S4 (it's not a case of if, but when) I will get something that has LTE/WCDMA (as well as LTE/WCDMA/GSM, LTE only, WCDMA only, GSM only etc) and also has VoLTE, which will give me total control of what I can use in these situations and will hopefully mean that I won't need to buy another phone for at least 3 years! (Until 5G comes along, of course... ) Though I'm hoping that the S4 was just an anomaly, and that most phones out there use 2G only if there isn't anything better - which would actually help and cover some blackspots on 3G and 4G (meaning that default modes would then be fine).

The reason we aren't getting 800 turned on is because EE are spending all their money on keeping Beans in keyboards as he keeps wearing them out.

![]() An 800MHz public launch would be awesome though - alright, the S4 won't access it on high power (due to no VoLTE) but hey, whatever my next phone will be, will have VoLTE and 800MHz. And then coverage on EE will be EPIC!

3G is still very much alive so I'm sure we would all rather have 3G data coverage rather than 2G data especially in the areas where 4G is absent.

3G in MBNL areas is more than adequate, sometimes my DL speeds on 3G down here are faster as more people are rinsing the 4G
