Dialled 150 on WiFi calling. Switched wifi off. Call drops.

Having multiple boxes with the same SSID is always a recipe for disaster if not set up properly, as not all devices will seamlessly pass from one to another. I have no idea how well the Sky hardware manages this, but perhaps not very well by the sound of it.

That and the phone itself not managing things well.

Yeah support for the full WiFi standard is pretty horrible, there is some support for AP roaming in the standard but little consumer hardware actually supports it.

Needs the new BTU firmware

So is that easy to flash or does it void warranty/need rooting etc? And if it's supported in the BTU why on earth are EE taking so long to fix their own firmware?

Pretty straight forward to flash using ODIN, however some people who have BTU Edge are saying it's not working for them, but it's working for me on my non edge S7 on BTU...

So better to hook up one third party AP and connect to that only? That's sort of what I am trialing now but on a different phone line. If it works I will try putting an AP in the house through the Q hub and only connect to that.

I think the Q system works OK for most things. I am probably within range of at least 2 APs at any one time. Either the hub and the mini or the mini and the Q box and an never really tell which one I am on. It seems to hand over well but maybe that is screwing up wifi calling?

If you have two networks with the same ssid and you're in range of both of them, and your phone switches between them mid call, this would cause problems as the transfer is not seamless; the WiFi standard as implemented does not have elegant handover from one AP to the other. It will probably drop a few packets and resume whilst the internal network figures out where the device went. If your iPhone is enjoying hopping between the two of them frequently on a call, this is the source of the problem.

I have the opposite problem with my samsung - it clings on to one access point for dear life and never switches to the other one with a stronger signal. I have to manually switch wifi on and off, or just run separate SSIDs and manually change it.

In the developer menu there are adjustments you can make to handing off Wi-Fi to mobile data, but I'm not sure if there's any more control on Wi-Fi only.

My Asus router can be set to kick you off to another AP based on signal strength, but my other AP doesn't have such control the other way.

Wi-FI is a bit of a mess in this regard, so the idea of having a separate access point purely for Wi-Fi calling is probably a good idea.

Yes it was an Orange site originally. To be honest I had no idea they had local sites like that one. I just assumed they had big regional centres, only a few around the UK.

New carrier update available on iOS 10, 25.1

iOS at least implements WiFi roaming based on signal strength. Android certainly doesn't by default.

VoLTE disabled by default in 25.1. Was enabled in 25.0.

At the end of my contract now so having my annual sniff around of the networks (not a loyalist - I go with what's best). EE seemed to be really pushing forward this time last year so I wanted to support that, it's kind of stalled now though.

Buuuut to be fair none of them are Nexus friendly with VoLTE, nor have native Wifi Calling on it. O2 is quite a good option though - Already has a low frequency 4G network, for that nice indoor coverage, without requiring VoLTE to access it. The Wifi Calling option isn't quite as elegant (an app like three's) but on the positive side it works on tablets etc.

Little bit pricey, as I'm on a fairly decent "megasim" deal right now but be assured I'll be monitoring things on secondary handsets and keeping my eyes on hotukdeals

Is anyone having issues with VoLTE not working (iPhone 6 Plus) - first noticed at about 4PM today - it's a bit temperamental at the moment?

As an FYI, I have two of the latest Apple AirPort Extreme ACs, set to automatic channel selection and connected via CAT 7, and the wifi calling handover between them using my iPhone 6 is seamless. I expected this to not work due to dropped packets etc, but it really is impressive.

It was enabled by default for me.

Gets enabled on the 25.0 update which ships but for some reason in the 25.1 update which gets pushed when you install the enabled flag is disabled. I'll send proof if you want to avoid the full court martial

I switched to data only on 9.3.5 and was still on data only when I updated to iOS 10 so it doesn't seem to have changed for me at least

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S7 Dual Sim and I have got the VoLTE icon at the top of my screen, when I make a call it still drops to 3G...

There's an update for Android 7 on my 6P. I am still opted in on the beta programme so this is a pre-release, so I wonder if there are any surprises - like VoLTE support?
