I know. It's one of the reasons I've now got an iPhone, as well as Amex with Apple Pay.

Still, maybe EE will surprise us!

I'm staying on the Android front as I prefer the customization options on Android devices, the ability to have widgets etc... and don't want to transfer my apps from device to device.
Sometimes, the equivalent to free Android apps are paid iOS apps! And I'm not paying for an app that is free on Android.
Plus, find me an iOS device with a microSD card slot... and in the future, headphone slot! (I won't buy something that has no headphone jack or microSD slot).

Here's hoping that the LG G4/G5 gets VoLTE, and on unlocked devices!

Who cares?

This thread is about EE, not you...

To be fair, his point is about EE.

If they didn't 'sook it doon' from Apple , and provided android with carrier settings, the EE World would be a happier place.

Sooner they go tits up the better, and that day is acomin quicker with every 'new' device.

No it isn't.

One sentence perhaps but the rest is inane and completely off topic, self obsessed tripe.

Leaving the argument aside, could you explain in English what you are trying to say in your post?

Sky certainly doesn't. Their outside broadcasts are often terrible. I think they're still using TACS.

See iOS now does have widgets (just a swipe to the right from the home screen). Fully customisable too. I really like it. Add, remove and rearrange. Nice.

I too I have to say have read this 3 or 4 times and I'm afraid I have no idea what it means or what you are talking about.
Could you clarify please?
Thanks.

I think he or she might be perturbed by the fact that EE are apparently not supplying carrier settings to compatible Android devices, and implying this is due to adverse pressure applied by Apple. Furthermore, the poster wishes EE ill, and would rejoice in seeing them suffer as they continue to release devices that in his / her opinion are not sufficiently advanced to satisfy.

Howzat?

Well that's kinda what I thought it meant but that makes no sense whatsoever.
I mean the whole carrier thing? That's not down to EE, that's up to Google and the various manufacturers that use Android.
Nothing to do with EE as far as i can see.
I'm sure EE would love an Android carrier update system like iOS then they could just push updates to all Android devices like they can with iPhones.

Devon Bloke Both Sky News and Sky sports news are big users of EE network for outside broadcasts and its on an increasing level some is done IOS devices using a dedicated app while others use special equipment that can have a full camera plugged in.

They both use many GBs a month of data and even use it abroad using EE roaming as well.

Not sure which broadcaster has the 2TB plan Olaf mentioned once.

Interesting article on how 3G and 4G have changed outside broadcasts from a while ago...

A lot of love for iOS devices in that presentation .

For several versions now, Android has had a system that allows carriers to distribute an application that includes updated settings for data, MMS, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling etc.

This would allow EE (or any carrier for that matter) to distribute the settings to any Android device running iOS 5.0 or later. While that's not all of them, it certainly covers the biggest flagship models of the last few years.

Further to my earlier woes with wifi calling, I have since made a number of perfect calls connected to the Sky BB in my shed through a separate Belkin AP in the house. So it seems there is some issue with the Sky Q setup and EE wifi calling. Just for info really. The answer for Sky Q users maybe to not allow the phone to use the Q box and mini boxes as APs but install a third party AP connected directly to the hub.

That'd even include support for the S4 as I know that the S4 can be updated to Android 5.0 - whether that has the hardware support for VoLTE or not I don't know.

Hopefully the carriers (in our case, EE) can take advantage of this because quite a lot of users use Android and they'd be happy to have VoLTE - I certainly would as it'd give me increased 4G coverage.

If your S4 'had an accident' would you buy another one so you could keep going on about it or would you get a new phone which actually did what you wanted it to do? It might be in the national interest as we'll have to keep 3G on until 2050 at this rate.

Chuckling to myself at Android devices running iOS, but yes, Android has had carrier updates for a while. The networks (not just EE) just don't use it for some reason - probably because they have no incentive to as long as they can play the "special firmware" card to force the phone to be bought through them. I'm actually not sure what convinced EE to enable Wifi Calling on Nexuses (pester power?) as that seems like the one exception.

Other than Apple of course, who have a LOT of clout when it comes to dictating terms etc. Maybe Google should use their size to bully other companies a bit more too.

There's quite a few android phones where you can get wifi calling but don't have to be from EE purchase channels

That work on EE's wifi calling? Interesting. I know they're very adamant when you ask any of their CS people that unless it's a Nexus or iPhone it must be bought through them / have their firmware (I suppose technically you can purchase from elsewhere and download and flash the EE firmware - most won't go to those lengths)

Edit: They do mention generic versions of the Samsung 7 series now it seems, and Blackberry Priv and HTC 10. Progress, I guess.

Yes and no - the Android OS itself is open source but the firmware layer is not. It's up to the handset manufacturers to support VoLTE on the firmware side (assuming the device is even capable) AND the carriers to provide the settings.

So you may find that older devices may support receiving the settings but lack the firmware to actually enable VoLTE/VoWiFi. However, this shouldn't be a problem for modern handsets.

Had a firmware update on my EE S7 Edge today which has enabled VoLTE.
