A quick question...

Has anyone recently been up near the A1/A47 junction at Wansford to see if that old T-Mobile 2G mast has been upgraded? (Three have their mast further up the A1.)

Reason why I am asking is that 3G has not improved, so I shoved my phone to 4G mode and got a strength of 62% - so has this mast been upgraded to 2G/4G or is it still T-Mob 2G?

Currently up in the peak district. 800 4G in a few places but sometimes only available if i force 4G only. Perhaps the priority is set lower than 3G while it is in testing? Speeds are perfectly acceptable as well http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/2320647364

I wonder if custom ROMs like CyanogenMod could be made to support EE VoLTE as OnePlus has done with their ROM?

No.

Only unlocked if you don't buy on a price plan - e.g. direct from Apple store or www.apple.com
Not quite true...

There are networks that supply unlocked iPhones, like Three and Giffgaff.

There are also a lot more retailers than Apple that supply unlocked as well, like Currys and John Lewis.

I locked a Pixel XL to 4G only today on EE and couldn't make a call, even though VoLTE is set (you can't change it). Any ideas what's wrong?

Has it been sourced from EE direct? If not may need EE firmware?

That's not correct as my Pixel is from Google directly and works perfectly with EE VoLTE.

Perhaps it doesn't work when 4G is forced Jon? Have you tried making a call on automatic network selection whilst using 4G?

If I make a call normally it doesn't show me I'm using VoLTE either as an icon or anything on the dialler.

How would I know? Am I being stupid? It's the first phone I've had that supports VoLTE on EE!

Given today's *suspected* 4G problems, could it be related? I don't know technically how VoLTE works, but if it's some sort of VOIP data solution, and 4G data connections are not resolving, might VoLTE also be affected?

When you make a call with WiFi disabled, does the 4G icon remain in the status bar or does it change to 3G?

On my Pixel (not XL), the only indication that I can recall of the voice call being 4G is the 4G icon as I explained above.

The 4G icon remains.

Call set up time seems a bit hit and miss too. Sometimes it's so quick I think it must be 4G, other times there's a pause.

But with all the problems EE has had today, it might be the worst possible time to be troubleshooting as there could be other factors.

Evening,

I replied to you on the EE forum.

Not all phones have the VoLTE icon. The S7 does - I like it because it makes it easy to tell whether VoLTE is active.

Anyway, regardless of anything else, if the phone remains on 4g when you're not using WiFi calling, you can be certain it's a VoLTE call.

I think you're spot on with this. I wish I'd been aware of the wider 4G issues before I spent hours doing hard resets on devices, changing DNS servers, flushing caches etc...

I'll bet @Devon's been tinkering in the cabinet again...

I'd leave it until the network is stable again....

Indeed you did, so I'll thank you here too!

Quicker call setup and 4G icon staying are our only indicators... The other I've noticed is handover from my home WiFi and not a dropped call like the retired 6P...

WiFi calling seems a bit buggy. It seems to randomly stop working and this has happened on multiple WiFi networks.

WiFi texting wasn't working for me today, so I switched it off. Usually does work, but I don't normally need it.

Shame that never took off beyond mostly budget phone and BlackBerry handsets.

So the 5X apparently supports 4G Calling - has anyone here tested it to confirm?

A manufacturer clearly doesn't need EE's help to get 4G Calling working as OnePlus has managed it despite EE seemingly not supporting it.

If the CM devs could get on it maybe lots more phones could support it, at least unofficially.

I'm not sure it does yet, but EE has tested a 5X that does work - so it may well be for a future update. The 6P has issues, so isn't ready yet.

Doesn't the OP3 only work on the community builds though? Not the "official" public builds, so maybe that's why EE haven't added it to the page yet, as most people with the phone will be on the public builds.

As a general rule L08 priority is set to be lower than G18 at the moment so most people won't ever see it.
Some sites are set up differently with the priority I think the same but the signal is more accessible (it appears to be where EE have 1800+800 4G+ working). Totnes is a good example of this where I can get on the 800 but speeds are more like 10-15Mbps, sometime slower.
In your case, forcing to L08 meant that you were probably pretty much the only person on it hence the very fast 30Mbps.
Absolute max for 5Mhz of LTE spectrum is around 37Mbps.

That seems to be a problem with Android handsets in general though. Never had problems with WiFi Calling on an iPhone.
