The EE site is currently down while they're 'making things better'

It is not the best organised site, so they've got their work cut out. It has to be said that EE are not the best at presentation.

Who knows, although it's unlikely they might end up switching it back on to boost coverage because I know that EE are aiming for 95% geo 4G coverage by 2020.”

Been on EE tech chat this morning as the unreliable coverage still persists ---- this was the reply .
"The issue you are currently facing is not relating to ongoing work in the area and is simply coverage related. This means that unfortunately the outlook for service in the area is not something that will improve. I am really sorry about that."
I asked if the local Orange mast had been decommissioned since the take over and the reply was that " the network had been optimized and they don't keep records of decommissioned masts"
So basically --- tough ...

Just had a text to tell me they're launching a new Travel Pass from 23rd November. It links to here: http://ee.co.uk/help/add-ons-benefit...avel-data-pass

In summary, 'It gives you 500MB data for a fixed price per day - £3 in our Europe Zone, £4 in the USA and Canada and £5 in Turkey, Australia, UAE, India, Thailand, Mexico, South Africa, China and New Zealand'.

I'm going through one of of my periods of being even more irritated by EE than usual.

My coverage across two masts (distant one for 4G home broadband and close one for crap 3G phone use) has been beyond unstable over the last few weeks. They're both up and down all the time, we had a lengthy 4G outage long after the Dyn issue was resolved, and today the 4G connection has dropped to extremely unstable 3G. Connection drops out every half an hour or so and the router needs rebooting to access data again.

As usual, the status checker tells me the close mast was recently fixed and is now fine, and the distant mast is fine.

It's a lottery every morning as to whether my connections will be working that day at all. It's virtually unheard of for them to work without interuption all day.

Then we move on to 800 access, and the upgrade of the nearby mast to 4G - f@ck-all happening as usual, and no sign of anything changing until well in to next year. That would be fine if my 'usual' access options weren't so damned unreliable.

These are all localised issues of course, but from where I'm sitting I can't see anything good coming out of EE at the moment. They're just fortunate that the other operators fail to meet even their dismal standards.

Anyway, I'm having a periodic rant. I should go and punch a pillow or something...

Quite happy with that, just in time for my USA trip on 25th Nov.

To be fair - that is one good thing to come out of EE recently. I've been spending a lot of time in Dublin of late, and £3 a day data roaming has been great. Plus, the network is stable over there!

While I have access to up to 20GB for £3 a day on Vodafone, 500GB a day on EE (and it not coming from your UK allowance) has proven very useful for me. So far I've never exceeded the 500MB either.

In both cases, 4G roaming is a dream.

EE have a deal for 32GB for £14.50 on a 30 day rolling contract. This is a not a phone SIM so there are no texts or minutes included. I've spoke to them on the phone and they the discount lasts until you cancel. I think this contract goes up with RPI so keep that in mind.
You must use this link in order to get the discount as I've tried to enter the discount code without it and it didn't work unfortunately.

I was going to buy a 50GB SIM from Vodafone for £30 a month until I saw this deal

Update:

Just been along the troublesome Eye Green/Eye stretch of the A47 that has troublesome coverage on EE (due to not being on the nearby CTIL mast or building other masts).

3G2100 weak as per normal. There, but very weak. In some areas of Eye there is no 3G2100.
4G1800 quite weak. Certainly not as weak as 3G2100 (I think it reported about 30-35%, so just under 1 bar) but certainly not ideal. Would work outdoors in Eye but not in Eye Green (likely too weak to be usable).
However...
Shoved it onto EDGE for a quick test of coverage and EDGE showed up to be about 35%. This is interesting as it is 2-3 bars of signal, so much better than the 0-1 bars on 3G or 4G.
Would certainly be usable outdoors and indoors in Eye, likely outdoors only in Eye Green. (Though of course, not for data, as EDGE is just terrible.)

So the future seems promising, even if EE don't build a new mast. Once the power is increased on 4G, to 2G levels, Eye will be fine for coverage, with Eye Green requiring 800MHz to work indoors. Not ideal as Vod/O2 have a CTIL mast nearby doing 2G900/3G900/4G800, possibly 3G2100, so CTIL is still the network to be on (unless EE build a new mast there), but much better than what I previously thought.
Assuming that 800 is launched in that area (which I thought would happen, because of the rural area and distance between masts) and the L1800 power-up to G1800 levels does happen, EE will be OK... just about.

edit: Three seem to have resolved the problem via rolling out 800MHz on the nearest mast... hopefully EE will do the same.

In which case, this is likely due to the Orange mast being decommissioned. Unless there is a need to re-enable it (to help with 4G rollout) I think it's staying switched off...

"Optimized" usually refers to decommissioning, so that basically shows you that the mast will not be returning to service anytime soon.

Which is interesting as the previous EE tech chat stated there wasn't a problem with that particular mast !!
Thanks for your time --

Is the Europass (that included calls and texts) being replaced with something similar to the travel data pass, and is there a link?
jonmorris

It's simply the Euro pass renamed and working beyond Europe.

By the look of it, anyone opted in for the pass will be charged when going to the other destinations automatically.

What are the prices for the new Europass then? £1 extra than the Travel Data pass for calls and texts as well?

Brilliant deal, but any of our resident EE experts know whether you can actually make calls with it if you choose to? IF so, what about things like wifi calling? Right now I'm on £22 for 10GB plus minutes and texts but I extremely rarely use minutes or texts... so technically would be saving even if I made the odd call or text as it's unlikely they'd add up to £7/month.

Main thing holding me back would be the "worry about spending too long on the phone" factor. A fixed £7 per month is oddly easier to psychologically deal with than "I just spent 50p on texts", even though the 5 texts are cheaper.

I'll wait for someone to confirm, but I think you can make calls albeit at a high rate.

My Mobile Broadband SIM can make and receive calls. It has a normal number, just no included calls or texts. Each call and text is charged at the rate in the price guide (they're not cheap!).

For someone who makes little to no calls, a MBB SIM is certainly an option. More data for your money, and if you do ever need to make a call - you can do so and just pay for it.

Thanks. Something to think about. Will admit, I do still like paying for peace of mind.

Assuming 0800 numbers are free from it, you can use other services like 1899 to make cheaper calls I guess.

And.... we have a problem!

4G is not working on my local mast - it instead gives a signal (as it should) but Emergency Calls Only. 3G is working as expected, so I'm using that for now (as our Virgin Media Wifi has got severely congested - pages weren't loading).

My mast did that once and it's never been the same since.
