This could well be the week I make the leap to an iPhone. Is there any way I can check when it launches (without a VoLTE device) whether 800 is available in my area, and perhaps even how strong the signal is? Annoyingly my phone can't be locked to 4G only to check this way.

I don't really want to rely on the coverage checker when it's updated as I've found it to be highly optimistic around here previously.
Which phone do you currently have? If it's running Android there are several apps on the Play store you can download to check if you're in a VoLTE ready area.

I've downloaded one to my iPhone as the Field Test mode no longer works on the 7/7 Plus since they've started using the Intel modem for LTE.

Hmmmm. New app and 800 release. Is it going to be a bit like the threee app to allow non volte devices...
Can't see it myself

There are apps to replace Field Test on the iPhone?

An absolute no on that.

I did ask, and was told that EE rejected the idea of an app before even Three had gone for it. The conclusion was that it was clunky, hard to support, and requiring a separate dialler would make for an awful customer experience.

So, once again, no!

yes seems so, i love it lol.
im from the older era of netmonitor(via MB's LM) and then ftd
same also applies to the g4 too, son and daughter got them.
I was hoping the G4 would get VoLTE, as it's not too old (2015), definitely supports it (Three UK have VoLTE on it) and has band selection for seeing just how good the 800 range is, LTE/WCDMA so that 2G can get shown the door once and for all (though I shouldn't need 3G either when I have a VoLTE device, and all the upgrades are done), and a way of taking the back off (and replacing it with a larger back) so I can shove a beefy battery of 6000mAh+ into it.

If the G4 doesn't get VoLTE then I'll have to look for other phones that have VoLTE and LTE/WCDMA modes.

Does anyone have any ideas when the new app is going live?

The one on Android is tragic, so slow and clunky

I'm using an Honor 7 at the moment. Is there an app that will confirm the presence of accessible 800Mhz? If so, a recommendation would be great.

I won't be buying an iPhone at all
I can't say I'm surprised, you've been dithering over upgrading to a G4 for the last six months!

Haha, has it really been 6 months?

From what I've found, and for what I need, the G4 is a great phone - ideally all I need is the green light for VoLTE/800MHz and it's a done deal

Neither do I.

Old handsets will be right at the bottom of any to-do list.

If LG has got an IMS stack that works with VoLTE on EE, it shouldn't be that hard to add to older phones - although it may come down to the chipset. I'm not expert but think EE and others will want to add it retrospectively if they can.

EE may also want to use it as an excuse to upgrade people, so it may not go that far back.

Funnily enough, that thought also crossed my mind .

Yup, the last thing they'll want to do is encourage people to stick with older handsets. They'll make a big thing about it being a revolutionary step and suggest that you'd be a fool not to buy the latest device to take advantage of it.

*this fool actively considering doing just that....

The G6 is rumoured to launch in 3 months - I'd be surprised to say the least if they bothered tinkering with the G4 at this stage in its lifecycle.

Finally got a chance to take a look at the close up pictures I took of our (sort of) local mbnl mast today, I knew from my testing phone and the text my other half had received that it had been upgraded to 1800mhz EE4g, but after looking at the close up pics of the tags fitted and with the help of Pedro's video guide I was surprised and a bit bemused to discover that it had been upgraded to three 800mhz 4g and no EE,
Three already have the area well covered by 800mhz north from Nantwich and south from a mast above the village of loggerheads, EE on the otherhand only have highband 3g/4g coverage from this mast which doesn't cover the centre of the village, that is covered by an old orange 2g mast which still hasn't been touched when it could have easily been upgraded via microwave link from this mast as it in good line of sight..
All very strange..
I guess all should be revealed this week for the lucky few when it goes live.

This is why I want to see what real change (if any) there is around here before I do anything rash. It'll be interesting to see what the difference is.

Meanwhile, in mid Cambridgeshire, after a day of "maintenance" we now have intermittent service. Less maintenance, more... breaking, methinks.. or maybe they're doing much needed upgrades to legacy masts, which would be nice.

Have you checked the old and new service checkers?

Status checker said there was maintenance today that apparently finished at 6pm. It was just gone 9pm when service returned to some sort of normality lol

Yep!
Done some testing and 800 down here is going to be immense. Even before they have them all turned on.
